Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) rights in Germany have evolved significantly over the course of the last decades. During the 1920s and early 1930s, lesbian and gay people in Berlin were generally tolerated by society and many bars and clubs specifically pertaining to gay men were opened.

Same-sex marriage has been legal since 1 October 2017, after the Bundestag passed legislation giving same-sex couples full marital and adoption rights on 30 June 2017.

Cologne has a long history of being a  gay friendly city and in downtown we can find a few gay friendly bars as well as Baustelle 4U nd Zum Pitter Cologne.

Cologne, a 2,000-year-old city spanning the Rhine River in western Germany, is the region’s cultural hub. A landmark of High Gothic architecture set amid reconstructed old town, the twin-spired Cologne Cathedral is also known for its gilded medieval reliquary and sweeping river views. The adjacent Museum Ludwig showcases 20th-century art, including many masterpieces by Picasso, and the Romano-Germanic Museum houses Roman antiquities.

Nice rooms with very good air conditioning. Amazingly quiet considering we are here at one of the busiest weekends of the year. Gay friendly. Great service from all the reception and bar staff.

I booked this hotel via Booking.com so I had no idea this was a gay friendly hotel until the next morning when I saw the large flag outside.

The location of the hotel is very convenient with a relative short stroll to the central station. Also the staff was very helpful with directions and a little pleasant surprise was the free minibar.

There are also a few shops and cafes nearby so if you need something in a hurry this place is ok.
The room was a little small but still convenient enough and it was also clean along with the bathroom.

For gay guests, in the same street there is the famous and modern Sauna Babylon, a must to visit if you want to relax.

Very friendly staff. The location is surrounded by bars and restaurants. My room 617 nice and spacious and comfortable. Easy to get a taxi or public transport. Breakfast really nice. I certainly thought it was value for money and looking forward to my next stay.

deal location on a lively street full of restaurants and bars. Friesenplatz U-Bahn is at the bottom of the street for access to public transport but the hotel itself is within easy walking distance of all the main sights of Cologne.

Room was a good size, warm, clean and comfortable with the benefit of a free mini bar (2 beers, 1 coke and 1 water per day).

Would recommend and would have no hesitation in staying again.

Upon arrival we were greeted by very friendly and helpful staff. They gave us a map and spoke good english. The room was of good size and very clean. The room come with free wifi and tea making facilities and mini bar. The ensuite bathroom was a bit small but contained all essentials including, shampoo, shower cap, hair dryer, soap and body wash.

The room was cleaned daily and even had extra pillows and duvets in the wardrobes. The rooms were also equipped with air conditioning and a heater. The hotel is nicely situated within walking distance to all sites of cologne and any public transport. Night times were very quiet and both me and my partner slept well.

There are plenty of restaurants and bars nearby, situated only 5 minute walk from this hotel in the square. We went for the cologne Christmas markets which were all easily accessible from this location. I’d definitely recommend this hotel for all those wanting to explore Cologne.

The room itself was of a decent size with a comfortable bed. It was also clean, and had a lot of the things that I needed. Plus free fizzy water, coca cola and beers complimentary of the hotel which was extra nice(no charges either for any replacements). The room cleaning staff were also helpful, although there were a few language barriers (I found they were not as proficient in English as the reception staff, but then I could have been a bit more bilingual also).

I had a few little niggles about the room facilities though. These were: no milk available for coffee or tea; the room was quite hot at times and there were only thick quilts on the bed (inevitably I found myself sleeping without them on me); the step into the bath/shower was on the high side so an elderly person may find that a bit tricky (there was a handle to hold on to though); a lack of English speaking channels on the TV; and, finally, I did find an empty beer can in the press under the TV. However, these are only small niggles and didn’t affect my overall enjoyment of the room and facilities.

One last thing: a lot of shops, restaurants, and other facilities close on Sundays. This is worth noting. However, kiosks stay open so they can cover off a lot of your basic requirements. There is a kiosk nearly right outside the hotel.

I would definitely stay at this hotel again when next in Cologne.

2. Hotel Lyskirchen 4* – Gay Friendly Hotels Köln

Hotel Lyskirchen
Hotel Lyskirchen

This hotel lies in the heart of Cologne, 100 m from the Rhine Promenade. Guests enjoy free use of the large indoor swimming pool and modern gym, and the sauna can be used for a surcharge.

The bright and spacious rooms at Hotel Lyskirchen feature elegant interiors. All rooms come with a flat-screen TV, a desk and a coffee machine as well as a complimentary bottle of mineral water. Free WiFi is available.

A full breakfast buffet is served each morning in the spacious lounge with its tasteful pink colours, upholstered chairs and framed pictures. Guests can also relax and watch TV in the lobby.

A 5-minute walk from Heumarkt station, this casual hotel is also 2.7 km from Gothic Cologne Cathedral and 4.6 km from Cologne Zoological Garden.

The bright rooms with contemporary accents come with free Wi-Fi, flat-screen TVs, and tea and coffee making facilities; some feature balconies. Apartments add kitchenettes and sitting areas.

Amenities include a warm restaurant, and a lobby bar and lounge serving light bites. There’s also a fitness area with a heated indoor pool, a sauna and a gym.

Hotel Lyskirchen was the nicest place to stay in a surprising seedy area of town, home to numerous gay bars that cater to the 30+ set. The pool is super clean and under-subscribed. The work-out facility is adequate and clean. Hotel staff was nice and unobtrusive.

The hotel was lovely, the rooms were clean, modern and spacious, although lack of free wifi in the rooms is a bit of a negative point. Contrary to some negative reviews on Trip Advisor my partner and I found the staff to be very polite.

The location is great, close to the river and U-Bahn stations, with the city centre only a train ride away. A short walk from the pretty ‘Old Town’ and also set in the midst of one of the city’s gay districts, particularly catering for the Bear scene.

The sauna, pool and fitness suite were beautifully designed and very quiet, although a few pieces of gym equipment were in need of repair.

All in all we were very pleasantly surprised by the quality of this hotel and hope to visit again soon.

Hotel Lyskirchen cannot be too highly recommended.

•Situated in a quiet street, butt only five minutes’ walk from the old town of Cologne, and thirty seconds’ walk from the river.
•Courteous, highly professional staff: a minor bathroom problem was taken care of instantly.
•The room and bathroom were impeccably clean, the bed very comfortable.
•A coffee-machine in the room, and a complimentary bottle of mineral water supplied every day.
•Free access to a modern (also impeccably clean) indoor swimming-pool on the first floor of the hotel.

(A generous buffet breakfast is served until 10 a.m., 11 a.m. at weekends. Good coffee, brought to the table (i.e. no queuing to get it from temperamental machines…) Unfortunately, the breakfast room, although large, is windowless and consequently rather oppressive first thing in the morning… but this is a minor quibble, and anyway breakfast can also be taken in the cafés in the old town…).

As for the accommodation per se: unequivocally one of the nicest and most professionally run hotels I’ve ever stayed at.

Beautiful clean room and bathroom, comfortable bed, all the staff were extremely friendly. Two minute walk to nearest tram line and to the river. Overall a lovely experience and would definitely stay again.

My room was compact but was well laid out and a very short walk to pool.

Reception staff are really personable. Being a German hotel chain breakfast was great unlike American hotel chain I recently stayed in. You get a pot of good coffee delivered to your table – none of that faffing around with machines that produce American Puritan weak and feeble coffee.

Brilliant buffet breakfast with a range of choice and excellent not in your face service. That said breakfast is BMW price than the Ford price – it was not included in the room rate which suits me as it exceptional.

Amenities include air-conditioning, TV, telephone including free local calls, work desk, safe, minibar and coffee- and tea-making facilities.

Take a break with a cool Kölsch beer in one of the many bars and rustic breweries lining around “Alter Markt” square. More distant hotspots as well as Cologne Trade Fair can easily be reached using public transport from “Rudolfplatz” which is located nearby the hotel.

The hotel itself is very nice. The lady at the front office was very kind and in fact all the staff members are. The room is clean and comfortable. They offer Nespresso. The breakfast is very nice and even at rush time it was not too busy. The location of the hotel is perfect, just in the neighborhood of the gay area with many cafes and restaurants and nice streets and shops. There is a public parking under the hotel. I can recommend this hotel and I will certainly turn back to this place.

Great location close to tram underground and very accessible to all tourist sites cafes and restaurants nearby. Bars also close and in the gay area. Comfortable beds spacious rooms modern friendly staff value for money.

Perfect location for my week end, in the heart of the gay district, easy to reach, a nice walk from/to the Central Station. Plenty of food options nearby and 2 Christmas markets around it.

SInce the refurbishment the quality has increased a lot. Rooms are spotless and sleeping quality is excellent.

Had a wonderful time in this hotel. Very nice room! Good bathroom facilities. It’s at a good location for shopping, sightseeing, christmas markets. And near gay bars as well! I would recommend this hotel.

his property went through a fresh modern remodel a few years ago. We had a superior room with a view of the Cathedral. It was excellent. The beds were comfortable. The bathroom floors were heated. Couldn’t ask for more.

The lobby bar was very popular and included unique cocktails. Great service as well. It gets an A+.

We were able to easily walk the city and didn’t need to catch the metro but it was just steps away.

Prepare for additional costs…parking says free in the garage under the hotel but it does cost twenty two a day. Also, breakfast is twenty five per person and access to the spa is another additional cost.

The breakfast buffet was excellent as is generally the case in most German hotels; several types of breakfast foods ranging from fresh fruit to different types of Broetchen made the breakfast meal most satisfying. Highly recommend a stay here.

Location
The hotel is walking distance from two train stations. There are a lot of restaurants nearby. There are cabs waiting outside the hotel.

Rooms
The rooms are spacious and clean. There is a big screen TV and there are English channels too. My only grouse is that the shower cubicles do not have doors and so the bathroom floor gets wet after a shower.

Breakfast
The breakfast has an excellent spread of food. You will be spoilt for choice. There are cabs waiting outside the hotel.

Upon arriving I thought this was going to be a really run down, old hotel. Was pleasantly surprised by the modern and comfort the hotel provided. The service was Ok, they allow you to keep to yourself but more than available if you need anything. The location is in a perfect location and you can walk anywhere in central Cologne in about 15-20 mins. There are great bars and restaurants located in every direction of the hotel but have them recommend you places as you can end up in a lot of cheap student places. Would stay here again but go for a more upgraded room.

Ideally located in the lively Belgian quarter – walking distance to all the main shopping streets. Spotless and clean room, nice color schemes, good quality amenities from the toiletries to the complimentary water, coffee and tea, free safe, pillow selection, well equipped gym, friendly reception staff, reasonable parking fee. If you decide to not have your room cleaned as from a 2-night stay, you get a voucher of 5€ to spend in the hotel bar.

Breakfast is an absolute hit, from the fresh juices to the omelet station.

Cosy hotel (lobby) bar with great quality cocktails.

The striking Pullman Cologne welcomes you to the center of this exhibition and media town, with its distinctive flair for artistic culture and Rheinischer joie de vivre. Enjoy the benefits of our exclusive location right in the heart of Cologne yet surrounded by calm, with stylish architecture, superb comfort and a distinguished ambience.

Good, very good breakfast ( but crowded in the bar ), nice view from higher floors, very comfortable beds and perfect stuff – close to gay district, Koeln HBF and Old City. Easy access by public transport.

The location, in the middle of shopping center and gay facilities and 10 minutes on foot from the Dom make up a lot of things.

I stayed here to visit the Christmas markets in Cologne. The closest market was a 5 minute walk away. The furthest was about 25 minutes. Only 15 minute walk from the Cathedral and train station. Great location. The rooms was really nice with a huge bed and lots of complimentary toiletries. When I checked in I was given a map of Cologne. The member of staff circled where all the Christmas markets were and gave me his recommendations. Lovely cocktails in the bar on 12th floor. Would definitely recommend this hotel.

The room was good, spacious with comfortable bed and nice bathroom. The breakfast had a large choice and I believe everyone will find something that suits them. I liked the fact they have a coffee machine, so you are not limited to filter coffee.

I was happy with their service at the reception desk, breakfast and restaurant. I really liked the fact they have free ice cream in the lobby (amazing idea during hot weather). If I will be back to Cologne, I will be staying with them again.

All the staff I had dealings with – reception, breakfast room, bar – were extremely friendly and efficient. 5 minute walk to the nearest U-Bahn station, a further 5 minutes stroll to the magnificent cathedral, and a further few minutes to the Rhine and old town. I will definitely stay here again when in Cologne.

Superior Room on the 7th floor, the room itself was very nice with a really comfy bed and we had a view out of Cologne Cathedral from the window. Bathroom was also very nice with lots of toiletries given. Wi-Fi had a decent connection and had no issues with it during our stay.

We had breakfast included in our booking and it’s probably the best breakfast we’ve ever had in all our travels. Can’t really think of much else you could possibly ask for from a breakfast buffet. Had around 10 different types of juices, smoothies, coffee machine, all kinds of tea’s, champagne. For the food: they had a variety of different cold meats, cheeses, selection of fruits, cereals, croissants/pastries with multiple jam’s, honeys, yoghurts. Also your usual hot food items too including sausages, bacon, egg’s etc.

Location wise, Cologne Central Station (Köln Hauptbahnhof) is around a 15 minute’s walk away with local, national and international transport connections available; also have easy and quick direct access to Cologne Bonn Airport. Appellhofplatz and Friesenplatz underground stations are both only a 5 minute’s walk away.

Attractions such as Cologne Cathedral, City Hall, Hohenzollern Bridge are all within an easy 15-20 minute’s walk from the hotel, as well as the Rhine Garden where Great St. Martin Church and Stapelhaus are located along with numerous restaurants/bars. Overall, we would definitely recommend Pullman Cologne and would happily stay again if we returned to Cologne even though it is pretty expensive but the room, service given by staff, breakfast makes it all worth it.

5. Hotel Domstern 3* – Gay Friendly Hotels Cologne Germany

Hotel Domstern
Hotel Domstern

Just a 3-minute walk from Cologne Cathedral and Cologne Train Station, this small, family-run hotel offers non-smoking rooms with free WiFi. It lies in a quiet, safe side street.

The elegant rooms and suites of the Hotel Domstern feature a private bathroom with hairdryer and free toiletries.

In the mornings, varied breakfast buffets featuring fresh, regional produce are available at the Domstern.

All of the sights in the Old Town district of Cologne are within walking distance of the Hotel Domstern. The Koelnmesse exhibition centre is only 2 minutes away by U-Bahn (underground).

Hotel details

In a Grade II listed townhouse, this unpretentious family-run hotel is a 9-minute walk from Cologne Cathedral, 1.8 km from Museum Ludwig and 2.3 km from Kölner Zoo.

Down-to-earth rooms feature complimentary Wi-Fi, flat-screen TVs and desks. Some rooms add sitting areas with pull-out sofas.

Amenities include a free breakfast buffet.

Just a few steps from the famous Cologne Cathedral, main station, historic city center, shopping area and not far from the trade fair, you will find Hotel Domstern in a quiet side street. We offer newly renovated rooms, free wifi, parking, only nonsmoking rooms, elevator and our extended breakfast buffet until 11 am and even 12 noon during weekends

The staff was soooo friendly, The breakfast was a surprise: every morning there was a different theme-buffet. And on your table you found a leaflet, telling you what’s going on and what to do in this city full of culture. And kölsch!

I stayed in the smallest and the cheapest room, just opposite the reception. In European way the room was of course very tiny, with no view. But it was very well equipped, and one of the handsome receptionists offered me a portable air conditioner with no charge.

If you are looking for a decently priced, gay-friendly, neat, clean and quiet hotel. This is for You.
There´s nothing much going on around the hotel, but just a few blocks away you can find another kind of “everyday-Cologne” with beer-gardens and sausage-stands. And on the Dome-direction just a couple of minutes´ walk away you will reach the best sights and shops of Cologne.

Very good value for your money.

I happened to be in Cologne for the Gay Pride Festival and really enjoyed it. Re the hotel it is indeed good. From the moment I booked by phone to check-out, I got courtesy and smiles all the way. The location is good as it is only 5 minutes away from the train station. Service is excellent. Breakfast is plenty with cereal, coffee and tea, brioche and cereal bread and three types of ham, cheese, jam, butter etc. We had a double and a single room. Not much too criticise.

They were really clean. The single can be used as a double but I wouldn’t recommend it as it is slightly small and I don’t think two people would be comfortable in it. The TVs are placed on the wardrobe which is slightly painful for the neck.

Hotel Domstern was quite pleasant and value for money and I would certainly go back any time

What a find! A delightful small hotel just 5 minutes walk from the station, cathedral, river and Altstadt! A building of character, courteous and helpful staff, excellent breakfast (with the possibility of eggs cooked to order – any way, but not boiled!).

My large room on the 4th floor (lift) was well furnished and had a good sized bathroom. I was shown some other rooms, which were smaller, but looked just as comfortable. If you are looking for a convenient, welcoming and comfortable hotel in central Cologne, look no further!

A 5-minute walk from the train station, this boutique hotel is centrally located yet not in a noisy part of town. Our room was great; breakfast was excellent (egg dishes made on demand); and the staff exceedingly helpful. The two slices of cake were a nice welcome. Loved that there was an elevator for getting luggage up to our room.
