Guide to Gay Friendly Hotels in Barcelona Spain (2024 Updated)

Is Barcelona anSitges, Spain one of the prime locations for LGBT people? Yes, it is considered one of the most friendly gay city in Europe. From restaurants, bars, sauna and gay friendly hotels Barcelona has all it needs for a great holiday in Spain!

The main area of bars and gay clubs in Barcelona is Eixample barrio close to many landmarks of Barcelona in terms of sightseeing.

Barcelona, the cosmopolitan capital of Spain’s Catalonia region, is known for its art and architecture. The fantastical Sagrada Família church and other modernist landmarks designed by Antoni Gaudí dot the city. Museu Picasso and Fundació Joan Miró feature modern art by their namesakes.

1. Axel Hotel Barcelona & Urban Spa– Adults Only – Gay Friendly Hotels Barcelona

Gay Friendly Hotels Barcelona

Axel Hotel Barcelona is a 4-star hotel gay friendly in Gayxample, the heart of the gay scene in Barcelona.

Faithful to the concept and style of Axel-design, comfortable, cosmopolitan atmosphere, is a good value for price. The 101 rooms combine the touch of decoration from Modernism with the warmth and elegance of the Mediterranean. New spaces at Axel Hotel Barcelona, will become the urban meeting point of the heterofriendly.

The area around the Hotel Axel Barcelona is known as the Gay-xample because of its lively gay scene. The staff has knowledge of the local gay scene, and the hotel is hetero-friendly too.
Offering free Wi-Fi throughout, this design hotel is close to Passeig de Gràcia’s exclusive boutiques. The Axel Hotel’s 500m² Spa Centre includes a hydromassage pool and saunas, and the modern rooms have flat-screen satellite TVs.

The rooms are modern and comfortable, the premium rooms are my favourite since they have lovely views of the street. Amazing views from the rooftop terrace, and they make good drinks and serve food in the summer. The neighbourhood is lined with restaurants, grocery stores, bakeries, bars and other shops, and is walking distance to all of the major Barcelona sights.

The bathroom amenities provided is cleverly packaged and brings a smile to the face.

The €10 fee to use the Spa and gym is still worth it, with a big heated pool and various aqua-massage jets, cascade and water-loungers. You can use the Norwegian steamroom as well.

The Axel Sky Bar is obviously quite a popular hangout especially on weekends and special event nights. The rooftop bar has great views but the drinks are a little on the pricey side.

Breakfast is very nice continental, with a good selection of meats, smoked salmon, cheeses, fruit and breads. Very good service here and at the front desk. A gay friendly hotel, it was amusing to see the complimentary condom was labeled as “hetero friendly”.

First time in a gay hotel and it was beyond a great experience. The reception staff was not just helpful but also charming: Juanma really made the difference during my stay. Fully recommendable.

A great hotel from friends for friends. the atmosphere is like home. Very nice rooms, we had gotten a free upgrade to an superior room (Thank you very much). Very friendly staff all over the hotel, spa, sky bar etc. It is the best place to stay for gay tourists in Barcelona. I will be back soon! I love this place.

The Axel is a decent hotel. It’s not amazing and could work a little bit harder on customer service. It’s work checking out the range of rooms, previously I have stayed in a corner room with a lovely alcove window and would recommend that. This time we stayed in a quirky room just above the entrance canopy. This was fine apart from really irritating water in pipe sounds as other guests flushed toilets and used showers. The roof bar is lovely. Room service was good.

Location. The best thing about the hotel is its location in the centre of Barcelona’s gay area. It’s an easy walk (and more importantly) easy drunken walk back from bars and clubs. There are gay shops and restaurants nearby too. If you’re also considering the Axel Two, bear in mind that the Axel is better located (in my view). You’re a 15 minute walk from the main shopping areas and about a 50 minute walk from the beach but there are taxis everywhere and the metro is not far (5 mins).

Right in the centre close to bars restaurants and bars. Despite been orientated to de gay market, is very straight friendly as it says on the mat by the entrance. Great terrace bar and service, rooms a bit on the basic side for the price but clean the beds are missive. 10 min to rambles and and gaudi buildings. A great choice for everyone gay or anything else.

Top Reason to choose Axel Hotel Barcelona as your stay in Barcelona

* Breakfast is exceptional – staff was superb – you won’t be disappointed!
* Rooms are simply designed (minimally) but are clean and modern.
* Beds are comfortable and new covers
* Lobby is open and inviting and front-desk staff were very helpful and considerate
* Rooftop bar lacked beer beverage choices – drag show was a complete disappointment. Bottom line; there are other bars very close by – get out and see the city.
* Plenty of restaurants around and within a couple minutes’ walk.
* This is a gay “friendly” <span class=”searchHit”>hotel – it is NOT exclusively gay.

Offering an outdoor swimming pool, Olivia Balmes Hotel is set 400 m from Barcelona’s Passeig de Gracia, in the elegant Eixample neighbourhood. The modern hotel features stylish air-conditioned rooms and a restaurant is our next recommendation for a gay accommodation in Barcelona.

The hotel’s restaurant serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. Olivia Balmes offers a sun terrace with an outdoor swimming pool and sun loungers.

Fantastic, clean and modern hotel which is very well located – metro station just a few steps from the door and a short walk to La Rambla.

It’s location – near the metro, Gaudi’s Block of Discord and the La Sagrada Familia – was perfect.

The rooms, though a little small, are designed well with a lot of hidden storage. They are modern, well maintained, and cleaned nicely by the housecleaners daily.

The rooms are modern and very clean, with great (hot) water pressure and heating (which was important if you are traveling to Barcelona during the winter. Just a note that we found all the TV channels in the room to be in Spanish (nothing in English).

The little touches like complementary water, chocolates, slippers, biscuits each day are a great addition to the general satisfaction during your stat at this gay friendly hotel.

Breakfast is rich enough, and has options to choose from . Breakfast is a wonderful selection including bacon, eggs, etc and also fresh fruits, cold hams and cheese and a variety of breads and cakes.

The pool and gym are wonderful additions to this very stylish hotel.

We are a young professional gay couple in our 30s on a repeated visit to Barcelona in August. We wanted to stay in Eixample to be close to the gay bars, and our price point was about $300~400 per night, which narrowed our search somewhat. We picked the Olivia Balmes because of all the glowing reviews and the super high ranking (it was ranked 14th of 513 when we booked). It was an decent stay, though to be totally honest, it did not impress me as much as expected, especially given the price charged and the uber high ranking.

We were given a room on the fifth floor that was very oddly shaped (triangle shaped, where the building turns), so even though it was fairly spacious, it felt cramped. The décor is modern but minimalistic, with mostly black or white furnishing. The room’s only natural light come from a small door to the balcony, which makes the room fairly dark. The bathroom was large, though the décor was certainly not up to the 4* rating. The bed was however quite comfortable. Overall, the room was functional and comfortable, but did not feel too luxurious.

The front desk staff were very friendly and generally efficient and helpful. Our room were tidied every day. The pool on the roof was much smaller than the photos would suggest, however the pool deck was quite swell.

Location-wise, it is slight out of the way, a bit further north than we would have liked, but still pretty convenient. We were there when the rather colourful Fiesta Major Garcia was going on, which was just 5-minute walk away.

Overall, it was decent stay.

How much does a room costs at Olivia Balmes Hotel Barcelona?

Centrally located just on the edge of the Gothic Quarter. 15 minute walk to La Ramblas.

The location is perfect for exploring the whole of Barcelona located right on edge of the old Gothic Quarter yet lovely and quiet throughout the day and night.

The view of the neighbourhood is quaint with a nice view of the European architecture. The bed is very comfortable and the room spacious. Bathroom was beautiful with white and grey tones.

Room was lovely with a balcony overlooking the front of the hotel and had all the creature comforts we needed including a Nespresso machine which was a lovely touch.  Bathroom and bedroom have been refurbished recently to a good standard.

Breakfast is Artfully presented with a wide array of choices including fruit, cheese, several protein and gluten free options.  The breakfast buffet is amazing, a huge choice of options. You can choose your eggs toppings from the buffet and give it to the waiters and they will prepare it in your style. many many fresh and very well prepared staff – cheeses, local food, good coffee and lots of fruits.

The pool is always clean and inviting with adequate seating on the nearby deck. A small bar that served meals and drinks was also located on the deck. The gym was adequate for a hotel of this size.

The hotel was very clean, stayed on the 3rd floor and one of the rooms had a small balcony which was great, first class food in was served in the restaurant. The breakfast was lovely however a little expensive. Location if fabulous for La Ramblas, Gothic Quarter. The staff at this hotel go above and beyond for guests. Customer service is excellent. Special mention to Cecelia on reception and Raul, Issac, Reuben and anyone else. Raquel in the restaurant was fabulous, Nothing was too much trouble. Would definitely recommend staying here.

Conference hotels in Diagonal Mar were full house and overpriced. So finding this hotel seemed like an alternative but after 5 nights here, I would count myself lucky for having to find this gem! It’s centrally located, 5-10 mins walk to various MRT stops and 10-15mins walk to the shopping streets, Plaza Catalunya, Gothic quarters, Gaudí buildings, etc. Location aside, it’s a nice hotel with dedicated friendly staff. Rooms are modern and clean. Pool and gym access on 5th floor (have to walk up stairs from 4th floor). Breakfast is amazing – check out the pictures attached. There’s a nice tapas restaurant just next door across the street. Only feedback for improvement is for hotel to consider refurbishing the 4 lifts as they are quite “bouncy” and the sudden jerks upon arrival floor are bit scary. Late check-out is available upon request but only until 1pm.

4. Exe Ramblas Boquería Barcelona – Gay Friendly Hotels Barcelona

Our next suggestion for a gay friendly hotel is a 3* hotel located just meters  away from the main party area and touristic of Barcelona – Las Ramblas!

Exe Ramblas Boquería is situated right on Barcelona’s famous Las Ramblas, next to La Boquería Market. The stylish, air-conditioned rooms offer free WiFi, flat-screen satellite TV and a private balcony.

Exe Ramblas Boquería features elegant modern décor, with hardwood floors and designer furniture. The soundproofed rooms have views of Las Ramblas or the colourful Boqueria Market.

A varied buffet breakfast is served in the Exe Ramblas Boquería’s bright dining room. The Boquería is an ideal place to sample typical tapas and fresh fruit, while numerous restaurants and bars can be found nearby.

A three star hotel in the Ramblas of Barcelona, next to the famous Boqueria market, with a fresh , modern and comfortable design. The Exe Ramblas Boqueria is in a nineteenth century palace completely renovated on the inside and turned into a space of minimalist design with the latest technology and facilities set in the colors of a Mediterranean market. Due to its central location, situated between the Port of Barcelona and Plaza Catalunya, in the heart of Barcelona, the rooms of the hotel are perfectly soundproofed to guarantee its customers the best rest.

Exe Ramblas Boquería
Exe Ramblas Boquería

This is absolutely PERFECT in terms of location . You are right next to everything, very close to the port, close to hop on hop bus locations, next to the fabulous market, next to great shopping, and the hotel was an absolute delight. Very small and boutique-like, but beautiful, with a great staff.

There is an open terrace at the back of the building, and the breakfast room offered a generous choice of food.

Rooms are within the European/US standards. It has a armoire type closet, safe, mini fridge, desk, chair, large bathroom with it’s own window/balcony. The room was cleaned very well each day with fresh linens & towels.

The rooms are spacious and well appointed. The hotel offers guests a range of pillows to choose from.

The only real downside was there is no mirror in the bedroom and no shelving in the bathroom, so toiletries, cosmetics etc had to be put on the floor.

The breakfast is very pleasing for what you need to start a great day.  If you are looking for eggs & sausage this is not it, in fact good luck finding that in Barcelona for breakfast. But it was a very nice spread of cheese, meats, fruit, pastries, juices, coffee, espresso.  Rooms are very good isolated as we can barely heard the noise of the market.

This hotel is immaculate. The room we had was a corner room that had three terraces !! One was even in the bathroom. It was in a prime location and the price is reasonable. Although it is small do not let that deter you from staying here.

The staff was always friendly and helpful. The only downfall I felt there was is that there is not a coffee pot and the beds were hard. But the bathroom was beautiful. May have been recently remodeled because everything looked new. I would definitely stay here again and highly recommend this hotel.

The Ramblas and the Boqueria can be busy and a bit noisy during the day, but the Boqueria closes around 8 or 9 every day and the Ramblas calms down quickly at night, and with the windows shut and blackout curtains drawn, I honestly couldn’t even hear street noise when we went to bed – and I’m a light sleeper! If you’re looking for something super luxe, this isn’t the place, but the rooms are nice, bright and clean and modern. We even had a small balcony overlooking the Ramblas, which was nice.

Plus there’s a really nice terrace for all hotel guests overlooking the Boqueria which NO ONE IS EVER AT, we bought a bottle of wine and sat out on the terrace every night before bed, it was great. For a couple more interested in exploring the city than spending time in a fancy hotel room, we found the Exe Ramblas perfect for our stay, a great home base for checking out the area but nice enough that we made a point of having a nightcap on the terrace every evening we stayed there. Also, the service at the front desk was very kind and helpful. All in all, a great place to stay.

The location is right in the city centre on Las Ramblas, so yes can be noisy and busy outside, but is a perfect base for exploring Barcelona. All the sights can be easily reached and there is a Metro stop right outside.

All the staff we encountered on our trip were friendly and extremely helpful.

Our room looked out onto the market, which we loved! Watching the hustle and bustle each morning was fun. We would definitely recommend popping in the market for some tapas!

I would recommend the Exe Ramblas Boqueria as a great base whilst on Barcelona, and would definitely return in the future.

The location is amazing, on the top of Barcelona at Montjuic hill you can enjoy the beautiful view of the city.

The facade of the hotel at the top of the hill looks 5-star but unfortunately the main entrance is located on the side and the hotel owners have not bothered with a proper paint job since the last prisoners left the castle of Montjuic.

Pleasant décor in rooms + the lobby/ lounge/ bar area looked the part with a pianist adding to the atmosphere in the evening.

The lobby bar is the highlight of the hotel. Elegant atmosphere with generously portioned, expertly-prepared cocktails. The bar offers numerous premium and top shelf liquors, and free snacks. The bartenders are well-trained and really seem to take pride in mixing a cocktail, rather than just slinging booze

The rooms are slightly tight, but well-appointed with comfortable beds. The shower is almost a religious experience: multiple shower heads, great water pressure, steady temperature. Very hard to get out of. The only negative was the air conditioning, which, although cooled the temperature in the room, failed to properly dehumidify — leaving a damp feeling in the room and in the bed linens.

The room is very spacious and I was able to enjoy wonderful views from the commodity of room.

Breakfast is excellent and had a wide variety to choose from.

Lovely location overlooking the harbor in Barcelona. Very peaceful and quiet, yet minutes away from nightlife and downtown via cab (7 to 10 Euros). Our room included a spacious balcony with a spectacular view of the harbor; a great spot to relax after a day playing tourist. The spa pool was nice; we were unable to enjoy the outdoor pool due to the Fall weather, but the location and landscaping suggested that we probably would not have left the hotel if it were open :-). The breakfast buffet was wonderful. Tapas in the lobby bar were excellent, and pricing seemed fair. Room service featured the same well prepared food.

The staff was superb, attentive to ur needs without once being in the way. When we return to Barcelona, this will be the only hotel we consider! We would suggest that some preventive maintenance is overdue, typical of a seaside resort and the effects of wind, salt, sun and sand. What a nice place to stay!

This is a lovely hotel, the location is peaceful but not the best if you want to pop out to a bar, restaurant or to the supermarket, prices in the hotel are extremely high, even for five star hotel standards.
We would stay at The Miramar again if we got a good deal but not at full price, for the price this hotel charges you can get better hotels in better locations.

6. Andante Hotel Barcelona – Gay Friendly Hotels Barcelona

This 3* hotel is 18 minutes walk from the beach. With a small rooftop pool offering great views over Barcelona, Andante Hotel is centrally located 350 m from Drassanes Metro Station and La Rambla. It offers free Wi-Fi and a gym.

The building is located in the Raval Quarter, in the Ciutat Vella district. It is superbly located on the Av. Drassanes, 23-25, which is in the old city center, right in the heart of Barcelona, a few minutes walk from Las Ramblas, Port Vell, the cruise terminals at the port, the Maremagnum leisure area and the Paral.Lel theatre district. Andante Hotel is a 3* establishment, practical, modern and inexpensive, with 134 rooms over 10 floors, with different types available: Doubles, Triples, Family, Singles, with a Balcony, with Panoramic Views and for the disabled.

All rooms are exterior rooms. The hotel provides an outdoor plunge pool, free Wi-Fi, Internet corner 24h, luggage storage room, late check-out room, reception 24h and gym. It also offers buffet breakfast with “show cooking”. It has a large terrace and a self-service microwave and vending machines for drinks, snacks and sandwiches.

Andante Hotel Barcelona
Andante Hotel Barcelona

Modern air-conditioned rooms feature parquet floors, a laptop safe and flat-screen satellite TV. The bathroom comes with a full-length mirror and a high-powered hairdryer.

A buffet breakfast with show cooking is available. A gluten-free breakfast is available upon request. There is a self-service area with a microwave and vending machines for drinks, sandwiches and snacks, as well as a large terrace.

The hotel is a modern hotel located in a great location just a short walk off of Las Ramblas and to the Bario Gotic section of Barcelona. We could walk nearly everywhere, and there were metro lines nearby for places farther away.

The hotel itself is modern and while the rooms are quite basic, they’re adequate if your trip is about getting out & about in the city. The breakfast consist of a full buffet of hot and cold food of very description and the staff seem relaxed about taking rolls, etc for a packed lunch. Rooms are spacious, clean and comfortable . The bed are amazingly comfortable.

There are plenty of options at breakfast, including some Spanish dishes for those who want an authentic meal. Good breakfast with show cooking and reasonably large selection of dishes.

Pool on the roof was good with a superb view of Barcelona during the evening and morning for the sunrise.

This hotel really stands out in what is quite a run down area, which can be off-putting. As other reviews suggest, there is a problem with homelessness in the area and this is apparent in the streets surrounding the hotel, however we experienced no issues with this. Nearest metro station is Drassanes which is less than 5 minutes down the road, we were able to get to everywhere we wanted from here with ease and staff at the hotel were incredibly helpful with directing us. Slightly further on from this station is La Ramblas so the hotel is in a great area if you are wishing to go out for dinner/drinks in the evening.

The room itself was spacious enough for the two of us, we booked the room with the sun terrace but unfortunately did not get to make use of this due to the weather! Would highly recommend this type of room had the weather been sunnier, otherwise there is not much point to it. The view from the roof terrace is beautiful, again we would have made more use of this in better weather. Great beer on offer in the form of Moritz, we wish we could get this back home! The barman was English and was very friendly, always keen to make conversation which was welcoming.

The only minor negative was the breakfast, hence a 4* rating and not 5*. The cooked options were limited and didn’t appear to be kept warm on hotplates and seemed an odd selection with fries and roasted vegetables including peppers and courgettes? Not your typical cooked breakfast! Continental options were fine in the form of croissants but a bit repetitive if you don’t like anything else. Other pastries included brownies and donuts which again is odd for breakfast! Cereal and toast also on offer but again, very repetitive. The fruit selection was okay but a bit limited with not much selection. We had already paid for breakfast but in hindsight it is probably a bit pricey for what it is, so would recommend going somewhere on La Ramblas for breakfast instead of the hotel.

Overall we really enjoyed our stay, hotel is located in a great area (for local connections more so than appearances) and the rooms are fantastic, along with the views from the roof and the rooftop bar. Only downside is the breakfast. Would definitely recommend this hotel.
