Blue Gate Fes

Dar Fes Medina Hotel in Fes Medina

Choosing the right hotel in Fes or elsewhere in one of the Morocco Cities can be a tricky experience. Arriving in Medina by night can result in a nightmare in finding the hotel location – many people will try to take from you some extra $ to lead you to the hotel but sometimes to the wrong location. Lucky we arrived at Dar Fes Medina during the day.

And since we were coming from our 3 days desert tours in Morocco , our guide drove us close to the hotel entry which was close to Bab Ziat Gate; our car was to big to enter the narrow streets and the owner of the hotel waited for us at the gate.

Location @ Dar Fes Medina

Situated a 10-minute walk from the old souks, Dar Fes Medina offers a private courtyard with a fountain, a terrace with seating area and air-conditioned rooms with free Wi-Fi. The Train Station is a 5-minute drive away.

Dar Fes Medina has an astonishing number of reviews on Tripadvisor (more than 600) and more than 86% are marked as Excellent. And it’s on No 4 on the Best BB & Inns in Fes; even if it’s on number 4 it has the most reviews from all the hotels in Fes, Morocco.

The location is ideal for touring, a quick walk from Bab Ziat, where taxis can drop you off, or a 10-15 minute walk through alleyways to the heart of the medina. There are not too many restaurants close to the hotel but you can easily go to the main tourist area. Dar Fes Medina is located in the old part of Fes. If you are looking for a hotel close to the bus station for example or to the shopping malls of Fes, you have to book a hotel in the new town which is 20 minutes.

Even if it was located very close to a mosque we were not disturbed by the prayers calling not evening in the morning; closing the windows will keep the noise far away.

Check in @ Dar Fes Medina

We were welcomed with mint tea and cookies before we needed to face any paperwork; of course the payment of the rooms was not raised at the beginning (only at check out!). I had an issue with the booking I have made on Booking.com; accidently I booked 2 hotels on the same date and the only solution not to get charged for no-show was to ask the owner -Mohammed- to cancel from the system by booking and it was done without any issue.

Room @ Dar Fes Medina

Dar Fes Medina
Dar Fes Medina

The rooms are very clean and traditional, staying in a Dar or Riad is a must when in Morocco. t. It was totally decorated in traditional fes crafts, from the bedding to the bathroom tiles. the neighbourhood is silent and greatly located in the medina (but not too close to the very noisy touristic hotspots);

The riad is filled with gorgeous antique Moroccan artwork, and our room was spacious and beautifully presented; we had a double bedroom. The beds were so comfortable; really good quality mattresses, the A/C was excellent and very easy to use, the bed sheets and pillows were immaculate and smelt lovely and fresh.

I liked so much the bedsheet as I was looking after check in to buy the same products the riad had. In the end you bought only some table clothes.

There was enough space in room for our luggages as well plus a closed where you can add more things. Room was cleaned on daily basis and towels were replaced as well every day.

The Bathroom @ Dar Fes Medina

The bathroom was a very good size and immaculate, plenty of toilet paper provided, with a decent shower (plenty of hot water), the usual hotel style standard packs of soap/shower gel are provided.

A hair dryer was as well provide and located only in the bathroom.

The WIFI was very good with no issue in the 3 days we stay at Dar Fes Medina.

Breakfast @ Dar Fes Medina

Breakfast was generous and delicious, changing a bit each of the days we were there. The eggs should have been cooked at least differently everyday (maybe some omelet or spanish omelet with some species on it). Cakes were OK not as good as at Riad Cherihane but still decent. Coffee was great and you could have refilled it many times.

The breakfast room was located on the main floor in a magnificent courtyard. There are some rooms close to the area breakfast is served so my suggestion is to book a room on upper floor not on ground floor.

Courtyard was beautiful, couldn’t stop taking photos from any corner of the room.

If I were to come again to Fes I would definitely stay again at Dar Fes Medina; location is great, rooms are excellent and the service provided very good.
