Awra Amba

Inside Ethiopia’s Progressive Village of Awra Amba Community

Introduction to Awra Amba Community Ethiopia

On the way between Bahir Dar and Gondar, there is the Awra Amba Community. Why is it so different from any Ethiopian village? Because it is based on an israeli concept – the kitbut.

The history of the AA is quite intricate. At the young age of four, Zuma began questioning his parents about societal inequalities between children and women. Eventually, at 14 years old, he departed from his family to establish a peaceful community.

However, they faced opposition from the dionis regime and were forced to relocate to the south. Upon their return, they found their lands occupied by other farmers and the government refused to give it back. As the lands were not suitable for agriculture, they had to turn to trade in order to survive. Despite their efforts, the community did not grow but rather dwindled over time.

The AA community now has 460 souls. It is the religion of the Amm that distinguishes it from the Kitbi community. Amms do not practice religion, which does not mean they are atheists, but rather that they believe that all people are equal and there is only one creator. All people should be brothers and sisters.

Here are a few quotes from them:

Their way of life is simple, based on work, study, and peace, which is the most important thing.

It is a simple school (there is also a governmental school in the village), with few benches and a board. The children study here for two hours each day, one in the morning and one in the afternoon.

Women do men’s jobs and men do women’s jobs; there is no difference between the two.

In addition to working in the field, they also work at looms. If you prefer, you can work from home.

You cannot expect medicine at the clinic; when you are sick, they have to purchase it. The most common diseases are malaria and diarrhea, mostly in children. A second clinic will be built soon.

There are few books in the library, but it is very well organized; an ideal place to learn, in my opinion.

The village is well-organized and clean. I have stayed in many places in Ethiopia, but these were the cleanest. The main kitchen, the school, even the toilets, are impeccably clean.

You can stay here for only 40 birr a night. The rooms are basic, but we don’t need anything more. Trust me. Even hot showers are available.

There are no rules in this community, such as smoking and drinking coffee. They also don’t watch TV due to the lack of time. Time is gold and has to be given to the community completely.

It sounds like a prison, doesn’t it? No. I’ve never seen such peaceful, happy, kind people in my entire life. You decide if you’d like to stay or leave the community at the age of 18.

The house is simple, clean, and touching. No one is left behind.
