Seven days in Bali is the trip length I recommend most often — and the one I get the most anxious messages about. “Is a week enough?” Yes. But only if you stop trying to see the whole island. Bali looks small on the map; it is not small in a car.
This Bali 7 day itinerary gives you four tested routes — one for families and first-timers, one for culture seekers, one for surfers, one for couples — and a full day-by-day breakdown of the one I plan most.
I have done this week with my own kids, with grandparents, and once — badly — with a scooter and too much ambition. What follows is what actually works.
Why 7 Days Is the Sweet Spot
Seven days is long enough to base yourself in three regions and short enough that nobody burns out. Five days means two bases and constant packing. Ten days sounds great until day eight, when the kids are templed-out and you realize you have spent four hours a day in traffic.
The rule I follow: maximum three bases, minimum two nights each. Every one-night stop costs you half a day to checkout, transfer, check-in. Two-night stops are the minimum unit of a sane Bali week.

The Classic Route: Nusa Dua → Ubud → Seminyak (First-Timers & Families)
This is the route I give anyone asking for a bali first trip itinerary: two nights in Nusa Dua to decompress on the calmest beach on the island, two nights in Ubud for culture, two nights in Seminyak for energy, restaurants, and sunset. It covers beach, culture, and buzz without a single drive longer than 90 minutes — and with a private driver for the transfer days, the moving days double as sightseeing days. Day-by-Day Breakdown
Day 1 — Arrive, Nusa Dua. Land, transfer 25 minutes to Nusa Dua, do nothing. Swim, early dinner, sleep. The single best gift you can give your family on day one is no plans.
Day 2 — Nusa Dua resort day. The beach here is reef-protected and flat — the safest swimming in south Bali for small kids. Water sports at Tanjung Benoa if anyone is restless; otherwise pool, beach, repeat.
Day 3 — Transfer to Ubud via Tirta Empul. Check out at 09:00, drive north, stop at Tirta Empul water temple (arrive before 09:30 to beat the tour buses; entry IDR 75,000, sarong included). Kids can join the purification ritual in the tourist pools — bring a change of clothes and a plastic bag for the wet ones. Check in to Ubud by mid-afternoon. Day 4 — Rice terraces and craft villages. Tegalalang Rice Terrace at 08:00 (IDR 25,000, flat-ish main path is stroller-manageable at the top level), then the woodcarvers of Mas or the silversmiths of Celuk — free to browse, genuinely interesting for kids over six. Day 5 — Transfer to Seminyak, beach club afternoon. Check out, 75–90 minutes south, drop bags, beach club by 15:00. This is deliberately the laziest transfer day — Seminyak rewards doing less.
Day 6 — Shopping, spa, Tanah Lot sunset. Morning on Jalan Kayu Aya, afternoon spa, then a 45-minute run to Tanah Lot for sunset (IDR 75,000 — go at low tide so the kids can walk out toward the holy spring at the temple base). Day 7 — Departure. Seminyak to the airport is 30–45 minutes without traffic, 90 with it. For flights before noon, leave at dawn or stay your last night closer to the airport.
The Adventure Route: Ubud → North Bali → East Bali
For cultural travelers and repeat visitors: three nights Ubud, two nights Munduk in the northern highlands, two nights Amed on the east coast.
Waterfalls and crater lakes around Munduk, dawn dolphins off Lovina if you must, then snorkeling the Japanese shipwreck at Amed. The drives are longer (2–2.5 hours between bases) and the roads wind — budget the long-distance driver rate and pack motion-sickness bags for the climbs into Munduk. The Surf Route: Canggu → Uluwatu → Nusa Islands
For solo nomads and surf-first travelers: three nights Canggu, two nights Uluwatu for the reef breaks and cliff temple (IDR 60,000 — our Uluwatu guide covers the kecak dance timing), then fast boat from Sanur to Nusa Lembongan for the last two nights (IDR 100,000–300,000, 30 minutes — book a morning crossing, the sea is calmer).

For couples: two nights in a cliff villa above the Uluwatu surf, two nights in the rice terraces outside Ubud, two nights in Seminyak for beach clubs and long dinners. This is the route with the fewest moving parts and the most private-pool time — transfers are all under 90 minutes, so no day feels lost to the car.

First trip + kids under 12 → Classic Route. Calmest beaches, shortest drives, easiest logistics.
Second trip, hate crowds → Adventure Route. Best culture-per-hour, worst roads.
Surf or remote work is the point → Surf Route. Most social scene, most sea days.
Honeymoon or anniversary → Romantic Route. Fewest logistics, most villa time.
Only 5 days? → Cut to two bases on the Classic Route: Ubud + Seminyak. Skip Nusa Dua.

Traffic is the tax nobody prices in. Canggu to Ubud can be 90 minutes at noon and 3 hours at 17:00. Every route above keeps drives off the late-afternoon window — do not “optimize” them back in.
Driver quotes vary wildly. A fair full-day rate is IDR 600,000–900,000 ($37–55). Below that, something is missing; far above it, you are paying a concierge markup. Book direct, agree the day rate and hours in writing.
The Nusa Islands leg eats time. The boat is 30 minutes, but door-to-door from Canggu with harbor waiting is realistically 3+ hours. Two nights is the minimum that makes it worth it — as a day trip it is a commute, not a holiday.
Temple fatigue is real. With kids, two temples in one day is one too many. I have never once heard “we saw too few temples” at the airport.
Tips for Families
Strollers: workable in Nusa Dua (beachfront promenade) and Seminyak (flat streets); forget them at Tegalalang’s lower levels and any cliff temple. Bring a carrier for temple days.
Dinners: eat at 17:30–18:00. Bali restaurants fill with the sunset crowd at 19:00, and most kitchens are happy to seat families early — you get better tables and faster food.
Pool time: schedule one unplanned pool afternoon per base. It is the difference between kids who remember Bali fondly and kids who remember being dragged.
Temples: skip the steep ones (Lempuyang’s 1,700 steps, Penida’s cliff stairs) with small kids entirely. Tirta Empul and Tanah Lot give you 90% of the magic with 10% of the climbing.
Car seats: request them when booking your driver — standard cars do not carry them by default, and two seats in a sedan means an MPV upgrade (IDR 850,000–1,150,000/day).
