Why Canggu Works as a Base
Canggu sits on Bali’s southwest corner with one decisive advantage: it’s the closest beach town to both the west-coast temples and the eastern interior. The one weak point: Sanur’s fast-boat terminal (for Nusa Penida) is a 45–55 minute cross-town haul — plan that day around it. Everything else is within 90 minutes of your villa gate.

Canggu’s backyard temple — “Land in the Sea” — sits on an offshore rock that turns into an island at high tide. The order matters: Tegallalang Rice Terrace first, before 09:00 — cool air, empty paths, UNESCO-listed subak terraces at their greenest March–April and September–October. First: the drive times you’ve read elsewhere are written from Seminyak or measured at dawn — from Canggu, add 10–15 minutes to anything south (the Canggu shortcut roads jam at school-run and dinner hours), and the 16:00–19:00 return through Tibubeneng can eat half an hour; leave earlier or eat dinner out and return at 20:00. Second: the famous waterfalls are partially engineered tourism now — Tegenungan has swing-and-nest photo platforms at extra cost and a queue by 11:00, and Tukad Cepung’s light shafts depend entirely on weather; go early or go managing expectations. Third: Nusa Penida from Canggu is a 13-hour day door to door — doable and worth it once, but it is not a casual outing with small children, and no brochure will say so.
