Guide to Eco Hotels in Austria

An eco hotel, or a green hotel, is an environmentally sustainable hotel or accommodation that has made important environmental improvements to its structure in order to minimize its impact on the natural environment and eco friendly hotels Austria are considered excellent place to hang out for a couple of nights in Vienna and then beyond in Austria.

Vienna is a city where nature and the built environment comfortably coexist. With 90 parks and gardens, green spaces constitute about half of the city’s land area. This comes out to about 120 square meters of green space for each of Vienna’s inhabitants — among the highest ratios of any city in the world.

Austria has long been recognised as a world leader in sustainable tourism and offers a wide choice of environmentally friendly accommodation. With 13% of cultivated land and 10% of its farmers organic, Austria is an international organic champion – and this benefits everybody.

The mountains, peace and a little bit of luxury – vacation at the 4* resort Forsthofalm is a sensual experience, and an unusual one as well: the hotel was built entirely out of wood.

The hotel is surrounded by beautiful mountain scenery and we were fortunate enough to have clear blue skies every day which made the views even better. The yoga classes were of top quality and varied every day so you never repeated the same sequences. We especially enjoyed trying out aerial yoga for the first time which was a lot of fun! A big thank you to Eve and Colin for being such great teachers!

There is a special emphasis on the food being healthy and organic and being a vegetarian I was pleased to see there were plenty of vegan and vegetarian options provided.

The location and hotel/property are excellent as you’re up the mountain a bit and ‘away’ from it all. Perfect ski-in/ski out and facilities for everything (yoga, spa, gym, bar). Room was great and overall service was excellent.

From the warm reception welcome to the custom drinks service at the bar the staff were incredible.

The free pick up service from the local station to the hotel made arriving by train super stress free and convenient.

The food in the morning and the evening is exquisite – always so fresh with such playful and incredible flavours. We would’ve had to pay twice the price for such quality food in London.

The spa facilities were absolutely spotless and so relaxing and beautiful. We also enjoyed an amazing massage with personalised oils made from herbs gathered on the mountain and prepared in the hotel.

The scenery is stunning, a breathtaking mountain paradise.

his is my all time favourite hotel in the Alps; as it sits up in the mountains right on the ski slope – it couldn’t be in a more perfect ski-in ski-out location as the chair lift is literally a few metres away. All the staff are so friendly and even the owners get stuck in and are there at meal times to help out and welcome you.

I love the fact that everything is so natural – with wood being the main material for the structure, the furniture and the decor and the food being mostly organic, catering for meat-eaters and vegetarians alike. It’s so luxurious with a fabulous spa with panoramic views over the mountains and a great wellness programme – we gave Yoga a go which was great fun! This hotel is fabulous for the avid snowrider (Leogang has some of my favourite skiing!) as well as someone looking to relax and soak up their surrounding atmosphere.

I’d give everything about Forsthofalm Hotel 5*s and would love to return again!

3. Boutiquehotel Stadthalle 3* – Eco Friendly Hotels Vienna

Boutiquehotel Stadthalle
Boutiquehotel Stadthalle

Boutiquehotel Stadthalle is a family-run and eco-friendly hotel with a beautiful garden, individually designed rooms, and free WiFi. It is just an 8-minute walk from the Westbahnhof Train Station and Vienna’s main shopping boulevard Mariahilfer Straße.

An organic buffet breakfast including local products is served in the breakfast room, in the sun-flooded winter garden, or outdoors in the unique green oasis.

Boutiquehotel Stadthalle’s water is heated by solar panels, and rainwater collected from the roof is used to water the garden. Moreover, all roofs are planted.

Set in Vienna’s multicultural 15th district, this upmarket hotel occupies an ivy-clad, turn-of-the-century building and a modern annex. It’s a 5-minute walk from Wien Westbahnhof train station and 3 km from Hofburg Imperial Palace.

Featuring colorful accents, the elegant, individually decorated rooms and suites offer free Wi-Fi and flat-screen TVs. Upgraded rooms have garden views and/or sitting areas, while suites add terraces, and tea and coffee making facilities.

There’s an elegant lobby lounge and courtyard as well as a roof lined with lavender. Parking is available for a fee.

A trendsetting combination of sustainability, design, and a touch of luxury: the world’s first hotel with a net zero energy balance is located in the heart of Vienna.

If you want to understand how to live a more green life, I would highly suggest staying at this hotel for some time. Our room was compact, but it was amazing to see how much could fit in a fairly small space, and how the hotel has taken care of various ways to be green (like an outlet letting in fresh air from the garden).

The staff was also lovely and took such wonderful care of us. And the breakfast was absolutely delicious, with a wide range of organic items to choose from – and great for both vegetarians and non-vegetarians.

The hotel was walking distance to two underground stations, and a couple of minutes away from the closest tram station. There were also a number of restaurants around.

The area where the hotel is located is fairly quiet – seems like a residential area – and was nice to stay in, away from the touristy parts.

I think we were all impressed with the quality of accommodation, the friendly and helpful staff and the overall eco-conscious approach from the hotel.

Very comfortable bed, good quality organic breakfast produce.

The only very small criticism would be that there is no provision of kettle and tea/coffee in the standard rooms (these are supplied in the superior rooms). Conversely the fact that fresh cappuccino/latte coffees are included with breakfast is a bonus as a lot of hotels would charge separately for this!

The bed & pillows were nice and comfy and the shower worked fine for the duration of our stay. The room temperature was perfect while it was very chilly outside. The WiFi worked fine the entire 4 days.

The breakfast staff were all charming and the eating area itself was nice and cozy. I think it would be lovely to eat out in the garden area in the summer. Breakfast itself was in keeping with the eco theme of the hotel. Lots of healthy, organic and vegan options. A word of warning though if you are a typical “Brit abroad” who wilts at the prospect of not being able to knock up a “full English” breakfast. It is a continental breakfast that is served and it is my opinion that you go to new places to try new things.

Extremely friendly staff, super clean rooms and delicious breakfast! One of great things about the hotel is that it is eco friendly, having solar panels and green roof that attracts different animals. Especially nice is to stay in spring and summer because of green garden. Would recommend it always.

Really cool little eco-hotel. Great concept. Literally green, as there are plants inside, on the walls outside, all over the place. Nice paintings with green and somewhat counter-cultural messages. I didn’t see any hippies, though, more normal well-dressed staff and guests. Pretty, quirky and unique hotel (although the concept is catching on and there are a few other hotels in Vienna too with similar themes, which is a good thing). A real experience. Strongly recommended.

4. Hotel Stefanie 4* – Eco Hotels Vienna Austria

Hotel Stefanie
Hotel Stefanie

Over 400 years old, the Hotel Stefanie is the oldest hotel in Vienna and a member of Historic Hotels of Europe. It offers free WiFi access, a 24-hour front desk and room service. The Schwedenplatz Underground Station is 300 m away.

All rooms have individually adjustable air conditioning, private bathrooms and Sky satellite TV. Some provide views of the courtyard garden.

Guests at the accommodation can enjoy à la carte breakfast. Restaurant Stefanie serves Austrian and international cuisine. There is also a garden restaurant, the hotel bar Stefanie, and a parking garage.

Occupying a building dating from circa-1600, this elegant hotel is a 14-minute walk from Wien Praterstern Bahnhof train station and 2 km from Hofburg Palace.

Warmly decorated rooms come with free Wi-Fi, flat-screens and minibars. Some feature pull-out sofas, desks and views across the courtyard or terrace. Room service is available. Kids age 11 and under stay at no extra cost with an adult.

A breakfast buffet is complimentary. There’s a library, a bar/coffee shop, and a genteel restaurant with an old-world vibe and regular live music (seasonal). Parking is available for a fee.

The Hotel Stefanie is demonstrably the oldest hotel in Vienna. Since the year 1600, guests have continuously been accommodated and fed in only three minutes walking distance from the centre, the 1st district of Vienna. The hotel has been completely renovated in recent years – always with the aim of preserving the spirit of the past. Selected antiques bring the history of Hotel Stefanie to life and are part of the atmosphere that distinguishes Vienna’s oldest hotel. Hotel Stefanie offers 111 elegant rooms and suites.
Most of the rooms face the quiet courtyard and are all equipped with air conditioning. Wireless LAN is available free of charge throughout the hotel, as are Sky programs on TV. Here you can feel the spirit of the past in a special ambience and enjoy all the comforts of today.
The bed was comfortable with ample pillows and individual duvets which my husband just loved.
We liked the sitting area where we could chill out after walking around Vienna – as others have said you need to request tea/coffee making items as they are not provided routinely.
The bathroom had an over the bath shower with poor water pressure and variable temperature (one of the reasons this is not a 5 star review) and the usual all in one body wash/shampoo which I personally dislike however I understand the eco reasons for using it.

Hotel Stefanie is charming, and I loved the decor, as it perfectly compliments Vienna. It’s also in a really good location, within easy walking distance of most sites, and close to three metro stations. All the staff I encountered were friendly and welcoming. My room was spotless, with plenty of storage space. It was also lovely and warm – much appreciated after a day exploring in freezing temperatures. Breakfast was fantastic, with something for everyone.

The hotel is really well placed for the city centre with a lovely ambience and stylish interior.Stayed on a mid week break, we had a really quiet courtyard room, which was spotless. The staff are all friendly and really efficient, and nothing is too much trouble they will even change you’re pillows if they’re too firm. Breakfasts have a good choice and the restaurant does excellent food with prices much the same as in the city but you need to book, especially if they have a conference on. Would definitely recommend.

For the more than 30 different spa treatments, we use regional and natural products. Hotel Outside – Feeling home.

The food was outstanding and the ¾ board really sets this hotel apart from any others. There was a huge selection, variety throughout the week and ingredients were fresh, seasonal and everything homemade.

The family room had a great setup – it was very spacious with tons of storage, heated towel racks, balconies, comfortable beds and stunning views. We used the pool every afternoon and there was a mix of couples and young families, but never too crowded even during the school holidays. You can also relax in the spa area and gaze at the incredible scenery.

It was great having a hotel so eco-friendly and focused on sustainability.

The ski bus and local regional buses were free and convenient (10m from the hotel!). Great storage and lockers for skiing too.

Live music one night was a lovely surprise, and we honestly didn’t want to come home!

The room was a modern, wood room. The service was very good. One of the owners sat down with us and chatted. Very good menu and food. The hotel is eco-friendly and in a great place to go hiking. Matrei is adorable and lovely.

This area is ideal for hikers ,outstanding scenery ,good public transport, restaurant prices in the mountains are extremely reasonable, all this helped by the hotel’s own very knowledgeable guides(payable) and of course sunny weather all week.
This hotel is well run, very clean, and everything works ,staff are friendly and very efficient

The Wellness centre also deserves top marks. The best thing was the food ,the head chef is no other than the owner himself.

Room was clean, great bed, but no air conditioning for warm nights. Wellness is spacious with various sauna’s, swimming pool (inside and outside), quiet relax room etc. Spoiled with a fantastic breakfast buffet, finger licking afternoon food and a really high quality diner menu. A night in the Outside restaurant where a 7 course menu is served with excellent wines and digestives is a must do, The servants are very customer friendly, your wineglass will never never be empty! Will not be your cheapest hotel, but definitely worth every Euro.
