There’s also a riverside villa with a kitchenette, a living room and a screened porch with hammocks. There are no TVs, phones or Internet-access.
Amenities include a restaurant/bar with outdoor seating on a veranda overlooking the waterfalls. There’s also access to tranquil pools in the river for swimming.
views of our waterfalls or Mountain Range, amazingly comfortable beds, Frette and Matouk linens and towels and bathrooms with hand painted Mexican tiles. Among our amenities are our natural fresh water pools, waterfalls, authentic Belizean cuisine, nature trails, day tours to the many Maya archaeological sites and adventure trips.
This pine ridge mountain top eco resort in Belize’ Cayo district is outstanding… from friendly, helpful staff to accomodations.
Located above the awesome 5 Sisters waterfalls, the grounds are immaculately kept. We took a tour of the organic gardens that supply the kitchen. From spinach to cucumbers to zucchini and tomatoes, rows and rows of fresh veggies.
The sustainable management plan was well thought through and chimed well with the lodge’s overall vibe. One observation, is that a lot of Belizeans are reliant on seasonal/tourist work and wouldn’t it be great for hotels like this – with solid eco credentials and working perfectly with their natural surroundings – to go that bit further and help facilitate stable incomes by encouraging or supporting more local fair trade organic suppliers, specifically with the soaps and shampoos provided to guests.
Instead of made in China/imported from Canada, it would be incredibly impressive to kickstart a local toiletries business along these lines. But that’s an aside…Gaia Riverlodge has taken the best of its breathtaking surroundings and created a perfect eco-luxe mountain hideaway.
It is a lovely boutique eco lodge set in the Mountain Pine Forest. So many “Wow” moments! The view from our two story cabana suite was amazing. The large windows have only screens so the sounds of the waterfall and breeze blowing in were fantastic. Waking up in our room each day was sheer bliss. This is truly the type of resort you see on the Travel Channel. The grounds are maintained superbly. The private beach area by the waterfall is so unique and relaxing; and because this is a smaller resort, it never felt crowded.
The rooms in Gaia are all very clean, unfortunately there is no air conditioning but they do provide you with extra fans if the night gets hot. They also don’t have TVs in the rooms but with all the fun things there is to do, we hardly noticed. There is another waterfall which you can cycle 20 minutes (although uphill) to get to. The hotel provides you with free bikes to do this.
There wasn’t any wifi in our garden villa but there was excellent working wifi in their main restaurant and reception.
Gaia also provides very reasonably priced tours, we went on a private Caracol tour with their guides Darryl and Calbert who were both such excellent and well informed guides. They also provided the most filling and delicious lunch on this tour.
Gaia also arranged for us to go on the ATM cave tour which was fantastic.
Gaia does amazing continental breakfasts with good portions, their yoghurt is particularly good. We also had our dinners at Gaia most nights and their food, especially the snapper and spicy prawns were amazing.
In summary, Belize was amazing and Gaia itself was such a memorable experience. Their staff are genuine, friendly and so helpful. I could not recommend it more.
How much does a room costs at Gaia Riverlodge?
Prices start 195$/night for Cottage with Garden View. The King Suite with Balcony is 303$/room per night with breakfast included – if coming on a honeymoon this is the perfect choice for couples.

The food, rooms, and property were exceptional as well. There is also so much to do as well on the resort. You can hike, paddleboard, bike, and swim. The resort even grows its own food on the property, and they will even let you pick your own fruit to eat while you are there.
Besides the fantastic room we stayed in and the amazing food we ate, I would have to say that my review all comes down to the customer service provided at Sleeping Giant. Doris and Alex at the front desk were absolutely amazing and helped us with any requests that we had. Gustavo and Richard at the restaurant provided some of the best dining experiences we have ever had, and we have dined all over the world, so that’s saying something. I can’t say enough about the service at this amazing eco-resort.
Rooms:
– we stayed in the newly built Riverview Suites
– stunning modern design
– private patio/balcony for morning yoga, morning coffee and a private plunge pool to cool off
– in-room large water jug instead of water bottles to be eco-friendly
– large spacious bathroom with an additional private patio and outdoor shower!
– we also took a tour of the mountain view suites: these rooms are also spacious with epic views of the jungle and private plunge pool. Keep in mind there are some stairs to get to these rooms so we would recommend the Riverview suites if you are traveling with someone who might have a difficult time with stairs.
Grounds:
– Where do we even begin? Sleeping Giant Rainforest Lodge is set in the Belize jungle and farmland. The onsite activities are endless, but here are a few we tried:
– paddleboard or kayak along the Belmopan River
– take the mountain bikes through the nearby orchards. You will likely see horses. If you’re lucky you will see the white horse with blue eyes (or unicorn as we call it)
– You must do the gazebo hike (we did it 3 times – it doesn’t take longer than an hour). Tip: go about an hour before sunset to get incredible sunset views and bring a flashlight when you walk back at dusk.
– go for a swim in the stunning pool! Sip on a coconut or cocktail and read a book or meet new friends.
– There are ducks who live onsite and literally they would make my day when I would see them pass by in the mornings along the walking path and see them bathing in the creek.
Nearby:
– We never left the grounds because there was so much to do onsite.
– If we ever went back we would 100% do the ziplining tour. We met a zipline consultant staying at Sleeping Giant and he showed us the views from the zipline – they are epic.
– Sleeping Giant has tours organized every day of the week – they’re listed on a chalkboard in reception.
Onsite restaurant:
– We were very impressed with the food at Sleeping Giant Rainforest lodge. Great taste, great presentation, and great atmosphere.
– farm-to-table experience as the restaurant uses from herbs, fruit, veg, and meat from their onsite and nearby gardens/farms. They had lots of vegetarian options too which we loved.
– we loved that they served drinks with bamboo straws instead of plastic straws! Kudos for trying to be eco-friendly!
Service:
– Kudos to everyone at Sleeping Giant for the top notch service.
– A special shoutout to those working in the reception area who were so accommodating and quick to respond to our many requests.
– Kudos to the maids who always left our room sparkling clean.
– Kudos to those who make the grounds/gardens look so magical and beautiful.
– Kudos to the kitchen and drink staff for great food and great service in the restaurant and at the pool.
Sleeping Giant ( eco-friendly Jungle Lodge ) is such a blissful retreat. The well trained Staff provides very personal attention to all needs. You will feel pampered while having scenic vistas surrounded by awe-inspiring tropical gardens. The Restaurant provided us with authentic cuisine – fresh and local! I would recommend the all-inclusive package offering meals, drinks and choice of excursions. There is an array of things to see and do for families. The pool is a work of art and you can easily kayak on the River located down the pathway from the property.
