Guide to Eco Hotels in Bulgaria ( 2023 Updated)

An eco hotel, or a green hotel, is an environmentally sustainable hotel or accommodation that has made important environmental improvements to its structure in order to minimize its impact on the natural environment and eco friendly hotels Romania are considered excellent place to hang out for a couple of nights in Bucharest and then beyond in Romania.

The Association of Ecotourism in Romania (AER) brings together in an innovative way the public and private sectors in a partnership for nature conservation and sustainable tourism development.

Bulgaria is last in the EU28 in terms of eco-innovation performance by a large margin and with a score of 34. Bulgaria has the potential to move from a modest to a moderate eco-innovator only if it manages to fill in structural gaps in the eco-innovation system starting from the inputs but also working on different related systems such as science and innovation; support to SMEs and the energy system.

The policy landscape is extremely important and besides formally including eco-innovation and circular economy in strategic documents, it needs to enforce radical measures for improving environmental performance and triggering eco-innovations.

Ecotourism can bring much needed income to rural areas, and help fund the protection of unique wildlife areas. For Bulgaria ecotourism is an excellent strategy.

Very beautiful place! The most amazing garden. It is spacious and even though there are couple of houses with few rooms, it feels like there’s a place for everyone in the garden so that they can feel almost alone.
Really it’s a tiny forest which has everything – including a pool. Room was perfect for my needs – it has a comfortable bed and there’s bathroom with shower. What else do you need?! TV and minibar – they have it as well 🙂
Restaurant was great, food was very delicious.
The main points one by one:
– Room : good, clean, not so luxurious as it can be, has everything needed, lack the final touch, something can be done a bit better as interior design
– bathroom: clean. Same as the room it can be done a bit better, decoration maybe.
– garden: HEAVEN. You can’t really see it on the photos they have, that’s why I’ll publish another 20. It spacious, green and well maintained. BRAVO !!!
– swimming pool, fitness stuff, jacuzzi – all well done but why fitness stuff is so close to the pool. It can be moved elsewhere, as where it is it’s kinda dangerous.
– kitchen: TOP !!!! Bravo to the chef !!! the soup was marvelous, the dinner – perfect, the rakia- one of the best home made rakias I’ve ever had. Recommendation to everyone – try the restaurant.
– the service: Perfect. Waiters really friendly, a bit too much for my taste but its alright. Maybe I made them feel comfortable to be that friendly.

Everything is great with Pri Malkiya but undoubtedly the best thing was the host Isuf (the son). He went above and beyond the call of duty to make sure we had a fantastic stay. He was really friendly, his English was perfect and he was happy to sit and chat and tell us about the area.

The location was perfect, in a quiet mountain village away from the hustle and bustle of the tourist areas, and a perfect base to explore the surrounding area. It is in the centre of the village and easy to find (on the left side down a small lane next to the restaurant in the centre).

The accommodation is perfect – it is a large house on three floors with four bedrooms, a shared dining area, sitting area and kitchen. It had lovely views across the valley from the upper floors. Our room was on the small side but it didn’t matter with all the shared space available.

There was a desk and wardrobe, the double bed was comfortable and there were sockets next to the bed. The ensuite shower room was clean and nicely decorated and there was plenty of hot water for the shower. The kitchen was large and fully equipped with all the modern appliances – oven, hob, kettle, microwave, deep fryer, coffee machine, and all the utensils, pans and crockery you might need. The whole place is spotlessly clean and wifi is good.

There were no other guests staying so we had the whole house to ourselves, it felt just like being at home. Isuf came back the next morning with an exceptionally delicious traditional breakfast – a huge banitsa, jam, yogurt and berry juice – all homemade from local produce. The secluded garden is immaculate and very pretty with lots of flowers and bushes; it would be a lovely place to spend a sunny summer’s day – it has table and chairs, a sun lounger and swing seat, covered area and outdoor grill.

We loved everything about our stay here and would gladly come back again and stay longer – it is definitely added on to our list of wonderful places to revisit.

This place was amazing. We had the WHOLE guesthouse and secluded garden to ourselves; the environs are peaceful and just stunning in their greenery; and the bedroom was spacious, the large bed comfortable and everything was immaculate. The private shower is very posh with its shiny tiles and the hot water pressure is great. The breakfast was delicious- an enormous banitsa with homemade jam and fresh berry juice and pots of homemade yogurt.

It was incredibly quiet and such a peaceful atmosphere. A great place to go running in the AM with the mountains as your scenery.

3.  Complex Kosovo Houses 3* – Eco Hotels Bulgaria

Complex Kosovo Houses
Complex Kosovo Houses

Located on a quiet spot in a typical Rhodopian village Kosovo, Complex Kosovo Houses consists of 3 houses set on 2 hills and between 50 m and 250 m from each other. The complex offers a restaurant serving regional Bulgarian cuisine, a selection of wines and a typical outdoor terrace, cherdak.

The Complex consists of 3 houses and a garden built in Revival style. It was awarded the Authentic Bulgaria certificate and recognised as eco-friendly property.

Kosovo Houses are nestled among hilltops and creeks. The tavern hosts a burning fireplace and a café.

The magic of the place is indescribable – one has to visit it to feel it. In a nutshell – it is so peaceful and quiet, the air is so thin, transparent and crystal clear, the silence engulfs you in a way which makes you integrate and personify yourself with nature irrevocably, feeling like a small peck of organic matter in the universe. The unique atmosphere grabs you with its serenity to an extent to which your brain starts to instigate the release of oxytocin in your body and you feel light, care-free, relieved from the burden of everyday routine, ready to bond with your immediate surroundings far from the maddening crowd of city life.

The Complex itself features the unique combination of traditional ethnographic architecture and the amenities of modern life which have been skilfully and unobtrusively incorporated in the design of the rooms. Wooden floors, wood carved ceilings, natural fibre materials for the bedding made of wool and cotton are complemented by the warmth of the local central heating and the modern bathroom area which comes equipped with a shower and toiletries.

It takes you some time to notice the great attention to detail in the interior design which helps you go back to long forgotten times – traditional Bulgarian carpets in each room made of wool, electric night lamps, imitating gas lanterns, wooden wardrobes, candles that were part of the traditional life of the local people at the beginning of the 20th century, dried mountain flowers in traditional vases besides the wooden staircases leading the upper floor – typical features of traditional mountain houses in the Rhodope mountains.

Your senses are busy to enjoy the picturesque view of the mountain that gives shelter to the other traditional houses, to breathe in the specific mixture of wooden furniture, woollen carpets and blankets, clean cotton, fresh mountain air filled with the scent of herbs, pine trees, wet soil and tranquillity. As soon as you leave your belongings in the room, you feel tempted to explore the nearby buildings where the restaurant or the conference hall are. You feel as a dweller of an ancient times village combining the best of two worlds – there is a lift for the luggage (modern); and at the same time you walk along cobbled stone paths connecting the different houses in the complex (ancient).

The food – traditional for the Rhodope Mountains region, full of flavours and spices, nourishing, delicious and tasty. The three-course meal set menus included typical Bulgarian dishes from the local area: a variety of salads and appetizers, seasoned with dressing and herbs from the neighbouring greenhouse, the steaming main courses which the friendly staff had prepared in traditional Bulgarian clay pots itched everybody’s nostrils playfully with their delectable aroma, the desserts – simple yet mouth-watering and flavoursome, once you have tried them you can’t stop until you finish them.

The service – the Kosovo Houses Complex has been officially rated as a three-star accommodation facility. The staff, however, did not come up to these expectations – they exceeded them immensely! Helpful, considerate, ready to assist in anything from parking your car in the tiny roadways to providing essential and genuine advice on possible outings and places to enjoy in the area – you name it, they will be there for you anytime you need them. In this respect the Complex has been underrated greatly!

All in all, the Kosovo Houses Complex could be something to put on your bucket list. Trust us – you won’t regret it.
