2. Okonjima Plains Camp 4* – Eco Friendly Lodges Namibia

Okonjima Plains Camp
Okonjima Plains Camp

Providing mountain views, Okonjima Plains Camp in Otjiwarongo provides accommodation, a restaurant, an outdoor swimming pool, a bar and a shared lounge. Both WiFi and private parking are available at the lodge free of charge.

Guests at Okonjima Plains Camp can enjoy a continental breakfast.

Hiking can be enjoyed nearby.

Set amid grassy plains within the Okonjima Nature Reserve, this laid-back lodge is 22 km from the B1 road.

Relaxed, TV-free rooms offer ceiling fans (no air-conditioning), safes, and tea and coffee making facilities. Upgraded rooms offer terraces, mini fridges and plains views.

Breakfast and dinner are included. There’s an airy restaurant, a casual lounge and an outdoor pool, as well as gardens and a wildlife rehabilitation centre. Safaris are available for a fee. Children age 3 and over are welcome.

The Plains Camp is 700m from the airstrip within the secluded wilderness area of Okonjima Nature Reserve and has majestic sunset views. Its design honours the Hanssen’s family cattle-farming history with its three-tier accommodation facility of 10 large View Rooms, 14 spacious Standard Rooms and six affordable Garden Rooms. It is family-friendly and wheelchair accessible.
Okonjima guarantees a unique African safari to remember. Our activities delight and educate even the most experienced of travellers. Mornings begin early with tracking cheetahs on foot in the Okonjima Nature Reserve alongside our experienced guides. In true African style, days end with game drives through the acacia thicket in search of elusive leopards followed by a sundowner. Whether you hike, bike or are an avid bird watcher, there are endless ways to spend your time at Okonjima.
This is a beautifully run establishment with very comfortable accommodation offering large picture windows opposite the bed; each morning we could sit with a cup of tea watching warthogs, black black jackals and umpteen birds cavorting around enjoying the cool of the day. Daniela, who is running the show, was endlessly available to help with any questions and took a long time on our last morning asking my husband for advice regarding making the enterprise even more eco friendly with a bigger emphasis on recycling.

The rooms are decorated perfectly with great views of undulates over the plains. The rooms are spacious and bathrooms great. The aim of the camp is to be environmentally friendly so there is little plastic, opportunities to recycle and eco friendly products to use.

Parking close to each room.

The accommodation and food here are excellent. We had a spacious room overlooking an area where the animals roamed, a nice bathroom, fridge, safe (although ours never worked and was not mended despite us reporting it twice). The food was excellent and for the vegetarians, excellent meals. The staff were also very professional and good.
The lodge is wonderfully designed, in a modern architecture style, both in the common areas and in the rooms. The staff is very friendly and helpful. We had a short stay and were caught by a heavy rainstorm. So we could not find a leopard, but our guide was very flexible in adapting the tour, so that we visited the conservation center, learnt a lot about this NGOs projects and finally met two cheetahs.
The service is great and the food is delicious! When choosing the rooms, it is worthwhile opting for the “view rooms”, because they offer excellent views.

. We had a “view” bungalow some 50 meters from the main building. The room and its bathroom were huge, beautifully and tastefully decorated and vey comfortable in every respect. But best of all were the windows – almost a complete glass wall – looking out on a stream of wildlife passing. Additionally, there was a terrace with chairs table and loungers also looking over the countryside.  Don’t sleep in; wake early and sit in bed with coffee watching the procession of animals.

The main building is like a large barn – but, again, decorated in a fascinating way to make it feel modern and interesting. The dining area, inside and out, was a bit refectory style but good for mixing and the food was faultless. The whole of the rear of the building looks over the plains and a waterhole, so plenty of animals.

We did a wildlife (leopard) tour late afternoon which ended with sundowner drinks to watch a stunning sunset.  Sadly the cheetahs have been moved to a different location where they can better thrive, but there is plenty to see – including the leopards. Not to be missed.

Simply the best!

3. Huab Lodge – Eco Friendly Hotels Namibia

Huab Lodge
Huab Lodge is an award-winning premier lodge with 8 luxurious bungalows and an extraordinary atmosphere. Perfectly situated in Damaraland, right on route to and from Etosha. Here you can “Enjoy the Huab Sound of Silence”.

They have a swim pool and loungers around the swim pool and loungers on the balcony of the lodges. They have a hot spring which was so lovely to relax in. We mostly had the swim pool and hot spring to ourselves . The lodge is eco friendly. The rooms were very spacious and clean and we all got a double bed each.

There are some wonderful touches in the individual room lodges which give a feeling that the whole team still really care that each guest has a very comfortable experience. The lodges are very spacious with comfortable beds, beautiful bathrooms, tea and coffee making facilities, bathrobes, huge fluffy bath sheets and an amazing view from the shower as well as the balcony which each lodge has.

The communal table at breakfast and dinner is quite unique where all guests sit together along with some of the more senior staff to exchange stories. The food is absolutely outstanding cooked by wonderful chefs who introduce the dishes in the local Damara tongue and then put us all to shame by repeating the same in all the native languages of the guests. There are 3 beautiful dogs at the lodge that make the place really feel like a home. The communal eating area/bar/lounge is stunning with great views and a telescope is set up for stargazing. The stars are amazing at night.

The Lodge is very Eco aware and on check in you are informed how to respect the solar generation, conserve the water etc which is really fantastic but please note this means there is no fridge or air con in the lodge as they take too much power.

Huab Lodge is a magnificent creation in the bush and is run by gracious hosts and owners Jan and Suzi van de Reep, both of whom are knowledgeable in the fauna and flora of the area as well as generally. Their staff are welcoming and include Monica (Gogga) and her husband Johan, another Johan the masseur, Jaap and his wife Kathy. Jan takes pride in introducing the wines for the evening meal, and then ensures that glasses are topped up all evening. The kitchen staff are called in to charmingly describe the meal firstly in all the San clicks followed by a description in English. Our meal for the evening was a delicious lamb stew. Guests sit at one table which creates a family atmosphere and much talk ensues of daily experiences.

When Jan bought their Huab property he persuaded two German geologists and a German Vet to purchase adjacent properties giving a combined area of about 8,000 hectares set aside for wildlife development and tourism, and primarily to provide a sanctuary for the desert elephants which were being hounded by encroachment of man. They have Gemsbok, Hartmann’s Mountain Zebra, giraffe, springbok and other antelope. Jan has a great knowledge of fauna and flora and is a great guide.

Most of the staff are keen photographers so numerous albums in the dining room provide interesting viewing including a photograph of Johan holding the tail of a massive python which was trying to engulf one of their dogs. He had to ask a guest to hold the tail of the python while he moved to the python’s head to untangle the coils with some difficulty, and extricate the dog from its clutches. The story had a good ending as same dog walked with us that morning!

4. Fish River Lodge 3* – Eco Friendly Hotels Namibia

Fish River Lodge
Fish River Lodge

With far-reaching views over Fish River Canyon just below, the private chalets at this property have rooftop windows. Each has an outdoor shower, and an outdoor pool is available.

Located 8 m from the canyon edge, the chalets at Fish River Lodge include a terrace, large windows and dry stone walls. They have a private bathroom with free toiletries. Beds can be placed outdoors for sleeping al fresco.

Overlooking the canyon, the restaurant serves home-cooked cuisine, which can also be eaten outside. There is also an indoor bar.

This modern resort with a main lodge and posh chalets is set in Canyon Nature Park and 183 km from Keetmanshoop Airport.

Featuring decks with canyon views, the 20 airy modern chalets have outdoor showers. Wi-Fi is available.

Amenities include an outdoor plunge pool with a sundeck, a lounge with exposed beams and a fireplace, and a casual restaurant with indoor and outdoor dining areas. The spa area has massages.

Making the most of the beautiful vistas, the Fish River Lodge has been built in harmony with its stark, striking surroundings. Completed in 2009, all the buildings that make up the lodge pay tribute to the amazing landscape, offering spectacular views of the Fish River Canyon from sunrise to sunset. The architecture and interiors of Fish River Lodge have taken their queue from the rugged landscape that surround it. Contemporary, and at times monastic, the lodge was designed to reflect the unique beauty of its location.
This is an eco lodge in the middle of nowhere so I appreciate that there are limitations on what can be offered but for the price as a minimum you need to be able to sleep. Your room is essentially a concrete box with a picture window and a metal roof so you can imagine how hot the room gets when the outside temperature is hitting 40 degrees. The room heat meant that the room was essentially unusable during the day and even with a fan it was just too hot to sleep.
Aircon is essential and they need to find a way to provide it. Also although mention is made of the 19km track to the lodge you also need to consider that to reach the track it is 85 kms of gravel road so the whole drive form the main turnoff will take around 2 hrs. Because of the effort to get here, and the price demanded, the lodge must be a destination in itself. It is good and the staff are lovely but it stills falls a little short from excellent. I think the best way to sum it up is to say that this is a view with accommodation rather than accommodation with a view.

here are only 10 cabins and the rooms are incredibly spacious with dressing area, large bathroom and outdoor shower. Bed are comfortable and look out onto the canyon. Don’t expect niceties like a fridge or kettle but the cabins do have a safe. Although there is no kettle there are tea/coffee provisions and the hotel will deliver hot water (in a thermos) to your door at your chosen time in the morning. Alternatively, get your flask filled the night before, wake up early and sit in an armchair to watch the sunrise over the canyon. Stunning!

Life here revolves around the restaurant/bar/lounge. Food is excellent. Breakfast is usual food and drink but hot dishes – mainly egg – are made to order. For the evening meal there is a set menu with a choice of 2 main dishes. However, if there is something you really don’t like, then tell them in advance (the menu is put out during the day) and they will provide something else for you. Lunch is from a menu, varying from a full meal to sandwiches.

The hotel provides drives into the canyon (payable at the hotel). There are also a couple of walking trails which provide superb views of the canyon. There is also a small swimming pool.

The staff are amazing – so friendly and helpful. Nothing is too much trouble.

The hotel provides itself on its eco-friendly ethos. Not a drop of water is wasted. If you go here, remember that the logistics of running such a Lodge mean that sometimes they run out of things!. We were just amazed at how they manage to provide this level of service and quality.

The cabins are fairly basic but that is all part of the experience, it is all about the view. Don’t expect niceties like fridges, TVs or in-room wifi, the lodge is unapologetically eco-friendly which permeates all it does. The staff are wonderful, they are genuinely friendly, professional and helpful and give the impression they love their work.
On the surface the price looks expensive but consider their nearest town is 180 km away, the lodge is the only accommodation on the western rim and no one could possibly leave without taking wonderful memories with them. Unforgettable!

5. Ai Aiba – The Rock Painting Lodge 3* – Eco Friendly Resorts Namibia

Ai Aiba - The Rock Painting Lodge
Ai Aiba – The Rock Painting Lodge

With mountain views, Ai Aiba – The Rock Painting Lodge is set in Omaruru and has a restaurant, a shared lounge, bar, garden, outdoor pool and sun terrace. Both WiFi and private parking are available at the lodge free of charge.

There is a fully equipped private bathroom with shower and free toiletries.

Guests at Ai Aiba – The Rock Painting Lodge can enjoy a continental breakfast.

Situated between Usakos and Omaruru amidst massive granite boulders overlooking the magnificent Erongo Mountain Range is AiAiba Lodge. The Erongo Region is one of the most environmentally diverse areas in Namibia, hosting an array of endemic and near-endemic plant, reptile, mammal and bird species, as well as a wealth of cultural artefacts.
Twenty thatched-roof twin bedrooms, tastefully appointed en-suite shower, offer the visitor a unique, luxurious African experience. The restaurant with its panoramic view, bar and crystal-clear pool nestling amount the rocks add to the natural tranquillity of the surroundings.
This place is in the magnificent Erongo Mountains. The drive is quite lovely but the location of the lodge is top notch as it’s surrounded by huge boulders and has a fabulous view especially at sunset. The staff was small because of COVID but we got a very warm welcome and great service. The food was very good and they managed a vegetarian meal at the last minute.
The rooms are very nicely decorated and private. Most private rooms are those at the far end away from the lodge but I think the view is less spectacular. We got up early to do the walk by ourselves as we unfortunately did not have time for the 3 hour guided walk. The rock paintings are faded but can be seen well in the morning hours. Definitely we will go back. I really enjoyed this lodge and it would be a lovely and easy weekend destination as it’s only 3 hours from Windhoek.
hat’s not something I say about a lot of lodges I have stayed in in Africa,, but it is true of Ai Aiba. The room could have used more space to unpack things had we stayed more than one night, but it was quite comfortable. The air conditioning worked well, the lighting was good, the pillows and linens were of good quality, and the shower was one of the better ones on our Namibia tour, with a fully-enclosed shower stall that kept water from spreading all over the bathroom floor.
The setting among the rock formations is quite scenic, and interesting wildlife shows up at the waterhole, which is visible from the dining room. Staff was friendly and helpful. The food was virtually of gourmet quality, with three different flavored butters for the bread at dinner and fresh croissants at breakfast.
Ai-Aiba is in a wonderful location, is in keeping with the area it is situated in and a fantastic place to relax. It was great not having access to technology in the room and was nice to go back to appreciating nature and to reading a good book. WiFi however was available in the main part of the Lodge for those who missed their technology fix. The Lodge staff were very helpful and attentive.
Management were always on hand when needed and made sure we were being looked after. We did a guided tour to see the rock art and experience the amazing sunset. The food was amazing. The room was very comfortable and cleaned to a high standard. We had a fantastic time and would highly recommend Ai-Aiba and hope to visit again in the very near future.

6. Wilderness Safaris Damaraland Camp – Eco Friendly Accommodation Namibia

Wilderness Safaris Damaraland Camp
Wilderness Safaris Damaraland Camp

Boasting an outdoor pool, Wilderness Safaris Damaraland Camp in Twyfelfontein features accommodation with free WiFi and free private parking for guests who drive.

There is a fully equipped private bathroom with shower and free toiletries.

Guests at the lodge can enjoy a Full English/Irish breakfast.

Wilderness Safaris Damaraland Camp offers a terrace.

There is a shared lounge at this property and guests can go hiking nearby.

Low-key permanent tents in a simple resort offering free safari activities & meals.

Dramatic vistas, open spaces, unique desert wildlife Damaraland Camp is situated in the Torra Conservancy – an inspirational community partnership – with sensational views of the surrounding desert plains, ancient valleys and distant peaks of the Brandberg Mountains. New technology blends with ancient construction methods to create innovative, eco-friendly luxury in the desert, with the camp’s 10 elevated adobe-styled, thatched units (including a family unit).

A spacious, thatched living area is complete with a fireplace, bar, and swimming pool. An open campfire and outdoor ‘boma’ can be enjoyed during calm evenings. Large game is not concentrated year-round here, with the natural cycle of rainfall dictating the seasonal movement of wildlife along the Huab River, which can be explored from camp.

Eco friendly place. Cool and comfortable tents. Boma experience was great (fire, singing staff, nice dinner) and also other activities were nicely done (perfect hiking and elephant tracking).

If you want to experience Damaraland in all its natural form , with basic creature comforts this place is great . One of the oldest eco-resorts , the Damaraland camp has basic beautiful lodges facing the beautiful Damara landscape , very good meals , a good bar selection of SA wines , all inclusive packages and good access to the Elephants in Damaraland . Fabulous staff , notable mention of PATRICIA , Gwen , Rihanna our serving and all purpose staff.

HOWEVER : no wifi , internet or phone access !! So if that’s important and u can’t go off the grid , don’t stay here . Also NO ELECTRICITY OUTLETS , so all charging / hairdryer etc to be done in their common office !! Breakfast early am in the open before the elephant tracking amidst the mountains was awesome.

Damaraland Camp is a very friendly place to stay : welcome and goodbye serenade by the staff (and songs during dinner). Everybody eats together at a large table where friendships are made. Extremely helpful staff, very nice eco-accommodations (no plugins in the room but available at the office) and good cuisine and wines. This small scale lodge offers elephant tracking from up close and personal and sundowners in the desert with beautiful scenery and absolute silence.

This is classed as an Eco lodge so in the winter make sure you are not relying on a nice hot early morning shower AND do make sure your stay is all inclusive as the game drives are pricey and it is definitely not something you could do in your own vehicle.
