An eco hotel, or a green hotel, is an environmentally sustainable hotel or accommodation that has made important environmental improvements to its structure in order to minimize its impact on the natural environment and eco friendly hotels Tulum are considered excellent place to hang out for a couple of nights in Tulum and beyond in Mexico.
Tulum has been branded as a eco-friendly haven but in recent years the expansion and development has left this small town playing catch-up. Simply put, there is no modern infrastructure in Tulum. … The lack of infrastructure puts the onus on the hotels to manage their guests’ waste – from plastic bottles to poop.

This eco friendly establishment was very clean with great service from all staff. Coming from a big city like NYC some would have a certain standard when going to a beach side resort.
But if you would like a taste of what the local life can feel like this place will best suite your needs.
Be aware this establishment uses solar energy for electricity so from morning to dusk there is absolutely no electricity available in your room.
But there is a station to charge your phone and wifi service.
We had a small but cute cabin like room with a clean bathroom and a shower that uses filtered water from the river (slightly salty).
Coffee and fresh fruit in the morning with other options close by just in case.
The eco-friendly hotel was unique and felt primitive with with a few luxuries to make your stay comfortable.
The main areas of Tulum were a short drive away but the location of the hotel allowed it to feel remote and private.
The cabins are secluded, surrounded by trees, water, and even have a cenote in the back.
If you’re looking to stay near the bustle of Tulum, but still have a peaceful escape into nature, these cabins are for you!
If you’re looking to visit Tulum but don’t want to stay at a stereotypical resort, definitely stay at MangleX Cenote Hotel.
The rooms are all accessed by a boardwalk over a collapses cenote that looks like a hut over the swamp.
It’s totally cool, and they offer massages in a tented hunt, snorkeling and kayaking through the cenote in the back of the property. It’s very beautiful and VERY different from the usual hotels.
They only have 4 hotels and the price we paid was $220/night, I’m sure this rate varies depending on the season and day, etc.
Because it’s an eco hotel, there is no electricity during the day from around 10am to 6:30pm.
But the reception desk has electricity all the time and they will happily allow you to charge your phone up there if you need.
The whole resort is dimly lit at night with tiki torches, it’s quite picturesque.
It reminds me of the ride Pirates of the Caribbean in Disneyland at the very beginning with that man sitting on the porch waterside.
Trust me, it’s cool. They have a tiny swimming pool in front to relax in, and a continental breakfast is served out front (included with the room) that has fruit, toast, eggs, quesadillas.
The room had a fan (no air-conditioning as it is all about being eco friendly) but it was fine as we stood the fan next to the bed. We saw lots of nature around the cabin which was nice.
The housekeeper does a wonderful job in maintaining the rooms and the receptionist couldn’t do enough for us.
Just make sure you take mosquito repellent to keep the bugs at bay.
The bed is very comfortable and there is a nice little breeze that comes in at night.
The sounds of crickets chirping away in time with the not-so-distant surf were like my own personal lullaby.
The reception is wonderful at this little hotel, very friendly and warm. They will do everything to make you happy.
I recommend this place wholeheartedly and would definitely stay here again if ever I come back to Tulum. A real little gem of a place.
As a biologist I also love the fact that we are surrounded by mangroves and that the place is eco-conscious.

I can’t say enough wonderful things about Azulik. My friend and I stayed her last week.
Food was amazing and staff were incredibly helpful and thoughtful.
This is a eco-friendly hotel that turns back the hands of time just a bit without compromising luxury.
I’ve told everyone about it and we are definitely going to go back to share with our families and friends.
If you’re in Tulum you owe it to yourself to visit this place.
It’s the most quirky, organic and utterly fascinating eco-hotel: self conscious, overpriced but unique.
The hotel shop, which usually sounds lame, was an architectural tour de force and actually had items (admittedly with eye watering prices) that you’d genuinely want to take home.
Of all the places I visited in Tulum, this was the one that piqued my curiosity to come back and experience properly.
Experience living in the jungle canopy w/ breathtaking views of the ocean. We splurged on an ocean villa – and glad we did.
The morning skies and evening sunsets are unreal. You really get the sense of being one with nature and did I mention the views…?!
This is an eco property – after a few days the smells and lack of AC/electricity does take away from the experience.
I’d recommend staying just a night or two to take in the experience than move on to a property that offers AC and adequate plumbing.
With that said, it truly was an unforgettable experience. We were lucky enough to experience baby turtles hatching on a full moon.
The spa was also a unique experience!! We opted for a cleansing ceremony.
Where our souls were cleansed in an ancient ceremony – purified with copal burning in conch shells.
Bathed in a bath filled with flowers, massaged and then released into the ocean with lotus petals for the final cleansing. I did this with my best friend – and it was probably the highlight of our trip.
Morning yoga was also great, held in a stunning geometric dome, built with indigenous mangroves. I’ve never experienced anything like the Azulik. A truly unique and memorable experience.
Although a little pricey, don’t skip out on getting a hookah at the treehouse restaurant. It’s all part of their ‘out of this world’ experience.
Since we checked into this hotel we’ve had the most amazing experience. They are super eco friendly but at the same time accommodating to your needs.
There’s access to WiFi all over the hotel and the views are so stunning.
The rooms are beautiful with views and the bathtubs are so gorgeous. The staff go above and over to make your stay so enjoyable. Highly recommend this hotel.
Excellent place for couples who enjoy eco-friendly and interesting environments!
Beach is absolutely gorgeous! Views of the jungle canopy along the upper levels connecting the bungalows and the main restaurant provide a unique backdrop!
Would highly recommend for a few days getaway with your significant other! Mayan ruins are just a few kilometers down the road!
Just keep in mind that it can be very hot and humid in the summer! Otherwise was a great time.
This Eco lodge is by far one of the most exotic and creative places i have stayed in and i have stayed in many.
Think a combination of Blue Lagoon, planet of the apes (the original one in the 70’s) and Avatar the movie.
The owner and architect of this place is a creative genius. You can see the evolution of when he first started to build and create this eco lodge to the design of today … you are in for an adventure of the senses.
PROS – Eco-jungle setting with a very friendly staff, delicious food with two high end restaurants on site (Kin Toh, and Tseen Ja), crafty room service ordering via a tube system and wooden balls which hold your hand-written order, exclusive beach front views (especially if you book a Sky Villa, which we did), two bathtubs (one on the balcony that faces the ocean), a few swings, two outlets to charge electronics, toilet paper that smells like baby powder, a friendly beach bar, and all the booze you want (until 10pm when the kitchen closes).
We will definitely be back in the future. Sky Villa was (at the time of booking, 2017) $850 a night. We stayed for two for our Honeymoon.
Taxis can take you to nearby stores if you need cheaper/more snacks/drinks, and ice on demand.
We didn’t use the spa or other fine services they had to offer but Tulum itself has plenty to offer.

On behalf of all the hotel staff, we invite you to disconnect from the daily routine and visit us at Las Nubes de Holbox.
This was a family vacation. We wanted to find a place that was casual and relaxing, but offered great service and proximity to a beautiful beach.
Las Nubes fit the bill. What a lovely place. We were right on the water – which is absolutely stunning in Holbox – and had access to a great restaurant with a delicious breakfast each morning.
We took golf cart taxis for a few dollars into town, walked to other restaurants and beach bars and enjoyed our walks on the gorgeous beach with shallow waters just off the beach.
It was so beautiful and the people working at Las Nubes are kind, friendly and responsive.
We loved it here and we will come back.
Las Nubes and Holbox exceeded our expectations, and we had a fantastic stay. Holbox is definitely a paradise, and Las Nubes is set far enough away for you to enjoy peaceful surroundings but close enough that you can cycle into town.
The rooms are enormous and are decorated beautifully in a rustic, eco-friendly style. I love all the little eco-friendly details. The beds are super comfy.
We used the paddleboards and kayaks, and as Las Nubes is at the end of the hotel strip, we were able to kayak up to Puerto Mosquito and see flamingos on the beach in the morning.
The deck from the hotel steps off into the water and is a short walk across to the sandbar.
You can also use the bikes at the hotel and go touring around the island; we cycled up to Puerto Coco a gorgeous secluded beach.
The tamarind margarita is a must try! It’s delicious, as is the rib eye steak. The best part of the evening is the beautiful sunset over the ocean from the deck or the sky bar.
They also include a 15-minute massage!
We had excellent service and a wonderful time thank you for making our visit to Holbox relaxing.
This property is so special. Being the last property before the national park, it feels remote and quiet and secluded…yet only a 10 minute bike ride to town.
As you look at resorts closer to town, they are built closer together and after a certain point, there is a road between the resort properties and the beach.
Even though only bikes and golf cart taxis use the road, it seemed like something we would not liked. Las Nubes is literally hanging over the water!
There are three pools and a beach area. We loved walking the sandbar into the national party and watching wildlife.
We enjoyed the free continental breakfast and every item menu we ordered here. They do a fabulous job on the food and drinks.
We also ate some meals in town, which were also outstanding. Its nice to feel secluded but have great dining options.
And the bar…wow…take advantage of the cocktails and sunset views. Or just eat lunch up there, the view is incredible.
There is also a gorgeous large roof top deck that would be an amazing place to host a party/wedding. I have no doubt Las Nubes would do an amazing job.
Las Nubes is an eco-resort (like most/all properties on Holbox)…so it is a great destination for an adventurous, flexible traveler.
And well worth the trip. Las Nubes can help you set up transfers/trips and are very helpful.
How much does a room costs at Las Nubes de Holbox?
Prices start 289$/night for Junior Suite with Garden View. The Master Suite Las Nubes
is 450$/room per night with breakfast included – if coming on a honeymoon this is the perfect choice for couples.
This suite features a balcony, linens and blackout drapes/curtains. The private bathroom has a shower, bathrobes, free toiletries and hairdryer. It also has free Wi-Fi, massage service available, air conditioning and a separate sitting area.

Video Review of Mukan Resort South of Tulum
Surrounded by trees on a Caribbean Sea beach, this tranquil hotel in the Reserva de la Biosfera Sian Ka’an is 46 km from the shops and restaurants of Tulum, and 161 km from Cancun International Airport.
Relaxed rooms in the main building feature balconies or terraces, plus free Wi-Fi and smart TVs.
There are also beachfront villas with thatched roofs; 1 has a private garden.
Complimentary yoga classes are offered. Other amenities include a beachfront restaurant, a bar and a lounge, as well as an outdoor pool and a rooftop hot tub.
Water sports equipment and bike rentals are available.
Mukan Resort has a unique identity and eco-influence. Boasting more than 200 meters of beachfront, the vast property excites the senses, allowing guests to completely surrender to the beauty of the Sian Ka’an Biosphere reserve around them.
Incredibly remote but accessible by car, boat and helicopter, the property offers five beach rooms, three ocean bungalows and one premium bungalow with a private garden.
Mukan is simply a beautiful place to stay. We took a chance off the hotel strip of Tulum and were exponentially rewarded
If you fell in love with Tulum many years ago, like we did, you may be slightly disappointed with the level of development in recent years.
Luckily, we discovered this place 1.5 hrs south of there. We can’t recommend the beauty, calm and extreme dedication to service that Mukan exemplifies enough.
You are right on the edge of the protected Sian Ka’an biosphere, it is incredible.
Mukan Resort is paradise, perfection in a resort. The location is remote and less-travelled, yet not too hard to get to.
The resort itself is set in a nature reserve, so you’ve got beautiful, untouched, palm-fringed beach on one side and a gaping lagoon on the other, giving onto lush mangrove jungle.
Bare-foot, sandy chic; fabulous rooms or individual private beach cabanas looking onto a beautiful, unspoilt beach and blue waters.
Facilities include selection of board games, SUPs, kayaks, body-boards, masks and snorkels (the beach is safe and beautiful for swimming), a TRX set to use, yoga classes or mats to borrow – if you want to do your own workout overlooking the beach or lagoon, and bicycles to borrow.
The food was served when we wanted it, and the menus were excellent, the standards of meals was absolutely first rate.
This really was haute cuisine to the very hautest of standards.
This resort is a small 10 room operation of a remarkable high standard given that it is in the middle of the jungle between the ocean and a lagoon, 40 km south of Tulum on a (decent) dirt-road.
Once you’re there, Mukan is a place of quiet, rugged luxury– it’s not the Ritz Carlton, and that’s the point! We stayed at a bungalow facing the beach: it was relatively small but practical, comfortable, very clean and done in good taste.
The weather was perfect so we spent all of our time outdoors anyway.
The service team at Mukan was super-friendly, accommodating, professional, generous, personable– they’re a happy bunch and it shows– definitely made all the difference. Food was very good, of high quality overall, and they gladly tweaked every dish to our taste.
The on-site masseuse was excellent: the best we’ve come across at a hotel anywhere.
We found that room rates are pretty reasonable for such a unique place, so even if charges for food & extras are up there with NY or London at the end of our stay the expense remained a fair deal.
In terms of the hotel itself – it feels spacious but still intimate, everything is open air and with just enough distance between shared spaces for it to always feel private.
We stayed in one of the beach bungalows and loved stepping straight out onto the sand.
The room isn’t huge but is absolutely big enough (and we had a travel cot set up in the corner), with a big plunge bath and shower.
There is a small plunge pool that was perfect for us and our baby with a shallow shelf he could crawl about on, and a rooftop tub with jets. But the reason you are there is the Caribbean sea, which is sparkling turquoise and as warm as a bath.
There was an activity each day that you could partake in if you wanted, like guacamole making or tequila tasting. We appreciated the effort make these fun and interactive but informal.
My husband also really enjoyed swimming out to the reef with Charlie one day.
But the staff are probably the thing that for me most stood out compared to any luxury hotel we have stayed in before.
We stayed in the Beachfront Suite, it is perfect if you like privacy as we had our own garden/beach area overlooking the sea.
It was situated away from the beach bungalows and has a jacuzzi tub on the decking area.
Monetary tips “propinas”. 10% service charge is included in your bill so there is no pressure to tip.
However, everyone works very hard and we were keen to do so. You can add extra to your final bill to be distributed amongst staff which we did.
We also chose to do some individual tips on the last day, I wish we had taken more cash in order to tip more.

Video Review of Alaya Tulum
The polished cabins provide free Wi-Fi, sitting areas and patios. All have handcrafted wood furnishings, and bathrooms with marble mosaics and rainfall showers.
Some cabins feature sea views, or open onto the beach. Apartments add kitchenettes. Room service is offered.
Parking is complimentary. Amenities include a private area of the beach, and an airy restaurant with terrace seating and sea views. Yoga classes and massage services are available. Breakfast is extra.
Nestled amongst the jungle trees and steps away from the beach, Alaya is Tulum’s most enchanting hotel.
With intimate social spaces, treehouse guest rooms, and a beautiful yoga shala, Alaya is perfect for those looking for a quiet oasis in the heart of Tulum’s beach.
Ideal for yoga and wellness retreats, guests can enjoy private beach access and wellness activities that promote inner peace.
Sleep well in villas inspired by the raw natural beauty of Tulum and awaken to views of the crystal-blue ocean.
Experience the sheer magic of Tulum and embark on a journey to Alaya.
We had a partial ocean view room with 2 queen beds, upstairs. Our room has a separate sitting area (room). So spacious!
No tv (we don’t need it) and note that no telephone in the order to call the front desk.
So you need to physically walk to front desk if you need anything.
The smoke alarm was beeping upon our arrival but the staff quickly fixed the problem by changing the battery.
We ended up watching sunrise in the room. We did keep our curtain closed most of the time because we could see other rooms across from ours.
Everything was clean. Hand sanitizer and surface disinfectant were provided courtesy of Alaya.
I even found a small jar of mosquito repellent in the bathroom (you will need this here!!).
The design of the room is beautiful (with eco-friendly materials but not shabby). Water pressure in my room was good, with hot water.
There’s a small cafe on site and we enjoyed our lovely healthy breakfast next day at 11:30am.
The oceanview room was nicely appointed, clean, very comfortable and with a great patio overlooking the Caribbean Sea.
This eco friendly hotel provided us with plenty of plastic free drinking water and other items such as eco friendly bug repellent.
The service from the Transfer driver to the beach bar was all fantastic.
We enjoyed drinks and elote on the beach each day and had a tasty breakfast at the hotel restaurant each morning. Carla at the front desk was extremely accommodating and helpful with all things Alaya as well as helping with tour bookings.
We highly recommend Alaya Tulum, check it out.
They are very eco-conscious in Tulum and it is absolutely wonderful. They have a recycling bin in the bathroom area and one near the beach as well.
If you do decide to visit Tulum, you definitely must read up on how to be an eco-friendly tourist. Everyday at the resort was a magical experience.
They offered turn down service, fresh water basins for our sandy feet before entering our suite, daily housekeeping, and security on site at all times.
The staff was professional, friendly, and patient with such impeccable service. I will definitely be a returning guest.
The hotel also undertakes different initiatives to be more sustainable and eco-friendly which means: No Air-con during the day, no plastic bottles and cooking with organic local ingredients.
This works but adds to the price as well – the place is not cheap for what it offers.
The location is very nice and cosy, it has more of a feel of a boutique hotel.
The rooms are very close to each other though, my advice would be to get an upstairs room or one of the rooms directly on the oceanfront (more expensive) for more privacy.
The beach was cleaned every morning by the staff who tirelessly work around the property to keep it in order – great job!.
How much does a room costs at Alaya Tulum?
