An eco hotel, or a green hotel, is an environmentally sustainable hotel or accommodation that has made important environmental improvements to its structure in order to minimize its impact on the natural environment and eco friendly hotels Eco Hotels Monteverde are considered excellent place to hang out for a couple of nights in Monteverde and then beyond in Costa Rica.

Monteverde is famous for its sustainable tourism. As a result, its eco-lodges are an excellent option for those who want to explore the tropical rainforest. All without leaving an impact on the environment.

1. El Bosque Trails & Eco-Lodge 2* – Eco Hotels Monteverde

El Bosque Trails & Eco-Lodge

Located in Monteverde, Costa Rica. El Bosque Trails & Eco-Lodge (“The Forest”) is a family run hotel nestled in a private 23-acre forest reserve, surrounded by silence, nature and wildlife. It is located 2 km away from Santa Elena Town. Free private parking is available on site.

A Continental breakfast is included and it’s free of charge.

Italian and Argentinian restaurants, as well as a coffee shop, an art shop and a food store are located at a walking distance from the property.

The hotel also features private hiking trails and gardens, and offers an on-site Bird Watching Tour as well as a Night Wildlife Tour for an extra fee.

Located in the Original “Old Town” Monteverde, and at walking distance to shops, pastries, and great restaurants, El Bosque is a Small Eco-Lodge in a beautiful setting completely surrounded by nature with gardens and trails to explore, as well as tours right on the premises (a birdwatching tour and a night walk in the forest).
Solar Power is collected through panels and is used to light up walkways and driveways, as well as to heat the water in the showers. Onsite tours are responsibly limited to small groups to keep the forest quiet and sustainable.
Friendly Staff will help you make plans and arrangements for other things to do and places to visit to make the most out of your stay in Monteverde.
If you’re looking for a simple, quiet and relaxing place to stay, away from the crowds, surrounded by its own private forest, but still at walking distance to a coffee shop, a bakery and three excellent restaurants, this is your place.
El Bosque is especially recommended for travelers between the ages of 30 and 70 (grounds are flat so it’s easy to walk) who are looking for a less touristy, more authentic travel experience, with abundant nature and wildlife (especially birds) at your doorstep.
From the perfectly arranged transportation with Carlos meeting us at the airport and driving us with expert skill and professionalism, to our room that was spotless and decorated with fresh flowers and ornate towels sculptures, to the wonderfully hot showers with good water pressure, and the very comfortable bed and furnishings, we felt that we were in a much more expensive hotel than one would imagine that we could afford on our modest budget of under $75 a night.
The breakfast was wonderful and we enjoyed delicious pancakes, scrambled eggs, organic butter, home-made marmalade, fresh juice, tropical fruit, rice and beans and hot coffee.
El Bosque is an outstanding value. The location is perfect and it is very safe to walk the trails on-site or walk next door to the nearby Children’s Eternal Rain Forest or to Curi Cancha Reserve.
We saw a Porcupine at the Eco-lodge and an Armadillo, as well as a White-Faced Capuchin Monkey and a wide variety birds, including wild parrots. We saw many beautiful butterflies and were delighted to see the Blue Morpho, all right on the grounds of El Bosque!
The other guests were respectful and courteous.
We slept well in the peaceful setting. The staff was very friendly, helpful and kind.
Each year, we have noticed new improvements to the Eco-Lodge that feature more environmentally sustainable features.
The property is very well-maintained and the rooms are fresh and upgraded.
We were looking for a hotel with a “wilderness” type of experience and this was perfect. The setting was wonderful.
There are great trails on the hotel grounds to wander privately and a guided night hike is also available right on the property as well.
Our room had the feeling of a “camping lodge” and this is expected at an eco-lodge so don’t expect luxury, but it has a wonderful atmosphere. The unexpected best part was the staff.
We often do stay at luxury hotels and the personality, friendliness, and helpfulness of the staff, especially Elizabeth and Daniel rivals the best at any 5 star hotel anywhere.
After a short 3 days when we left we felt like we were leaving close friends. If we return to Monteverde we will definitely return to El Bosque.
This is an eco lodge, which is clean, well maintained but basic. Wi-fi is good, but there is no air con, TV, or even hot tap (the shower has hot water) but then the idea is not to spend time inside.
There are plenty of birds, butterflies etc right outside the door and the nature trail is worth the hour plus it takes to walk round. Breakfast is also very good.
The Italian restaurant – Tramonti – is excellent but worth booking as it gets busy, and Stella’s cafe opposite is great for coffee, cake or lunch.

Monteverde Lodge & Gardens

Located in Monteverde, Costa Rica. This lodge is located 15 minutes’ drive from the Monteverde Biological Reserve and 1 km from Monteverde Town Centre. It features an extensive garden with a heated outdoor pool. Guests can also enjoy the indoor butterfly garden. WiFi is included at no extra cost.

Rooms offer views of the forest and gardens. Both upstairs and downstairs rooms have solar-heated hot water showers, an in-room safe, coffee maker, alarm clock, ceiling fan, reading lamps, hair dryer and laundry bag.

The lodge’s El Jardin Bar & Restaurant offers a bar setting around an open fireplace. The menu offers traditional Costa Rican and international recipes made with local ingredients.

Guests can also find a variety of dining options within 150 m.

Surrounded by tropical forests, this laid-back hotel is 2 km from the Monteverde Butterfly Gardens and 5 km from the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve.

Relaxed rooms offer free Wi-Fi, ceiling fans and safes, plus tea and coffee making equipment.

Upgraded rooms add balconies or terraces with hammocks. There are no TVs and no air-conditioning.

Breakfast is complimentary. There’s also a casual bar/restaurant with floor-to-ceiling windows and a fireplace. Other amenities include an outdoor pool, gardens and yoga.

The rooms are comfortable but not spacious. We opted for a forest view room so had a nice little balcony to watch the sun go down.

There is no AC as you would expect with an Eco Lodge but a large ceiling fan and additional fans on request help keep things cooler.

With the high altitude the temperature drops unlike the jungle for instance in the Osa Peninsula.

This hotel exceeded all of our expectations. The location was fantastic, the room clean and comfortable with a great view of a small stream and fountain. The restaurant was great with a wood fireplace that provided a great ambience after dinner.

We enjoyed drinks and games in the lodge after a fantastic meal. We enjoyed the eco park which is very close to the hotel.

Our kids loved the butterfly room and the pool. Excellent staff!

Very beautiful grounds with butterfly gardens and nature paths. The rooms were very clean and staff was friendly and helpful. They have recycling.

The restaurant is good and had a beautiful view (no room service offered). The hotel offers mini packages and a whole package, each seem to be a lot more than what you would get charged if you just plan it yourself.

The walk to get to a grocery store and to the town is about 10 minutes. We would stay at this lodge again.

The hotel is a “must-stay,” offering a true eco-lodge experience in a beautiful natural setting.

The hotel’s restaurant, El Jardin, has great food and wonderful service. The quaint nearby town of St. Elena is definitely worth exploring.

Lovely grounds and gardens, lots of birds, has an indoor butterfly garden you can dine in, hummingbird garden outside.

We had a garden room which opened to the (as expected) garden, with a nice patio with chairs and hammock outside. Great pool. Very helpful and friendly staff. Gave us a welcome drink on check in, and left snacks and drinks in the room in evenings.

Breakfast was included, the fruit they brought when you sat down would alone have been enough for breakfast, and then you ordered more! But good nourishment for hiking in the cloud forest. Very eco-friendly.

The hotel is an Eco friendly hotel set in exotic gardens with friendly staff just a few minutes drive from numerous outstanding parks.

The restaurant was very good – staff very friendly and helpful. Rooms are not large but are generally well appointed, each with a balcony.

3. Cloud Forest Lodge – Eco Lodge Monteverde

Cloud Forest Lodge

The Cloud Forest Lodge offers the perfect combination between isolating yourself in nature and staying close to all Monteverde´s facilities. We are located within the Bellbird Biological Corridor, two kilometers from the main town and in the middle between the Monteverde Reserve and the Santa Elena Reserve. We preserve our biodiversity with dedication since we believe that people deserve to enjoy the nature that surrounds us.

We are invested in maintaining the essence of Monteverde over time.

We do not have luxurious rooms. Instead, our space is ideal for relaxation and natural contemplation. We share a rustic lodge that breathes the forest.

We aim to offer an unforgettable experience by focusing on the openness, commitment, and safety of our services.

Occupying a cluster of quaint bungalows surrounded by tropical forest, this scenic hotel is 2 km from Monteverde Orchid Garden, 6 km from Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve and 8 km from Selvatura Adventure Park.

Rustic, wood-paneled rooms sleep up to 5 people and have free Wi-Fi and porches with seating. Some feature bunk beds. En suite bathrooms come with hot water.

Freebies include parking and breakfast. There’s also a low-key restaurant offering regional dishes.

Additional amenities include a casual bar, a TV lounge and a furnished balcony with panoramic forest views. Wildlife and forest canopy tours are also available.

Your one-stop location at Monteverde Cloud Forest Lodge offers 72 acres of primary and secondary forest, canopy tour, over 3 miles of private trails and more than 180 species of birds in a quiet and wonderful place.
Our beautiful gardens and bungalow-style bedrooms make a great place to relax, rest and enjoy nature.

This Eco-lodge hotel is surrounded by lush cloud forest with many interesting trails starting from the hotel.Food is simple and nutritious and the lodges are clean and comfortable with all the luxuries you need for a pleasant stay.

Very clean and well run, with comfortable cabins and a very sociable reception/restaurant area with plenty of space for sitting and watching all the local wildlife.

There were feeding tables located in the grounds to attract the birds and monkeys and the staff were very knowledgeable when it came to identification. Well placed for anyone wanting to enjoy some adrenaline sports including the zip wire experience located in the grounds.

The food served in the restaurant was good local food and plenty of it. Taxis to and from Santa Elena are easy to arrange.

This is an eco lodge located on a 72 acre preserve. It is a nature lovers dream. Particularly good for birders.

The staff is 5 star. Gustavo in the restaurant was a delight and the general manager, Wilberth, is charming amd runs an exceptionally well managed hotel. The rooms are clean and comfortable, although rustic.

The grounds and hiking trails are well maintained. We live in Costa Rica and even we saw wildlife here we had not seen before.

Self guided hikes, a zip line and a guided night tour were offered on site. Monteverde Reserve is close by, as are other attractions.

Note: If you are looking for a resort, climate controlled rooms or a tv in your room stay at one of the resorts in the area( expect to pay double or more).

We were very pleasantly surprised by the great facilities here as our travel agent had noted it as a simple basic eco lodge. Yes the rooms do not have TV or aircon but they are comfortably and attractively furnished and the bathrooms are immaculate with good showers.

The bar and reception areas are lovely with a nice enclosed balcony to have sundowners at Happy hour when you can have two drinks for the price of one, cocktails, wine or beer and also lots of bird feeders to spot the hummingbirds and other birds.

There are also several trails directly from the hotel that are easy to walk alone and we saw coatimundi and agouti just a short way from our cabin.

It is quite a way from the town centre up a very steep hill but taxis are easy to get and reasonable at six dollars per trip so we did not find this a problem.

The restaurant serves good evening meals if you do not want to go into town though.
