1. Dorado Beach, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve 5* – Eco Resort Puerto Rico
This luxurious beach-front resort features an on-site golf course, a fitness centre and excellent views of the Caribbean Sea. Dorado Beach, A Ritz-Carlton Reserve has several swimming pools.
Each beautiful room at this property features modern décor, a large wardrobe and marble floors. Some rooms feature an en-suite plunge pool and spectacular ocean views.
The property features 4 on-site restaurants that offer elegant dining with gourmet dishes like ceviche and oysters. There are also open-air and beach-front dining options.
On 1,400 acres of grounds, this luxury beach resort is 3.8 miles from Cerro Gordo National Park and 4.1 miles from Casa del Rey museum.
The refined rooms offer free Wi-Fi, coffeemakers and flat-screen TVs, as well as indoor/outdoor showers and terrace. Upgraded rooms have private pools and pull-out sofas. Suites and villas add features such as separate living areas and butler service.
Amenities include 2 pools, 3 golf courses, a water park and a spa, as well as a fitness center. There’s also a restaurant, a bar and grill, a beach bar and a cafe, plus free parking, breakfast and a business center. A resort fee applies.
The property is gorgeous. Formerly the property of Laurence Rockefeller – with visits by Elizabeth Taylor, Marilyn Monroe, JFK, etc., etc. – it has been transformed into a world class living experience, with a resort, residences, golf course and spa.
The resort has a contemporary design, but uses darker finishes to integrate well into the environment. The buildings are not taller than two stories, so while sprawling, the blending of nature is a subtle, but intentional detail.
The Dorado Beach has an extensive eco-tourism experience, with snorkeling, surfing, etc. Our private surf lesson was led by a professional kite-surfer and our private family snorkel was led by two marine biologists who began with a lecture on “life on the coral reef.” This is just a sampling of the type of service expectations the property has of itself. The quality of people and their performance is exceptional.
Upon arrival, each guests is assigned to a team (two) of ambassadors – who work from 9AM to 10PM to coordinate anything you want – spa, excursions, restaurant reservations, cooking classes, other schedule resort activities, professional photography, resort transportation, etc., etc. You are connected to them via text and you simply text when you need and when. They are exceptional (thanks Lucy and Ely).
Property: Amazingly beautiful and perfectly-maintained property with a gorgeous private beach (West Beach). The only downside I can think of is how expansive the property is, so if you don’t have a golf cart you’ll need to plan for some walking or call your ambassador ahead of time for pickup.
Room: We stayed on a first-floor room with a private pool and direct access to West Beach. Could not have asked for a better room than this. The outdoor shower, ocean view, beach access, soaking tub, walk-in closet, comfortable sheets (from a brand I hadn’t heard of before called Fili D’oro) all made me wish I could stay here forever. The only downside is we were nextdoor to a unit where a group of guests decided to blast loud pop music every night from their deck while karaoke-ing off-key, which made hanging out in our private pool less appealing.
Location: Reasonably easy to reach from San Juan Airport (I think it took 40 min or so by taxi). You can hail an Uber from the airport, but for some reason you can’t get picked up from the property (even if you try an alternate pickup point slightly off-property). As a result, if you want to go off-property to say, explore other parts of PR, you have to plan ahead and arrange through the hotel. Because this was such an hassle, my husband and I just decided to stay in the resort the entire time we were there (which was fine for us, but something to keep in mind).
Things to do: I spent most of my time hanging out on West Beach and swimming or enjoying beachside cocktails / complimentary coco frios (freshly cracked coconuts) that came out at 2pm everyday. West Beach is extremely safe thanks to a wall of rocks that had been placed there by the Rockefellers at some point. However it is not great for water sports (better to go to the east side, which is also accessible from the property) or snorkeling (better to go to another part of PR or maybe a neighboring island). Spa Botanico is supposed to be stellar but I didn’t get a chance to try it.
There is a 4-mile Rockefeller Trail for walking/running which is nice (follow the blue arrows on the ground to avoid accidentally going off-trail). There’s also golf course on the property. Of course you can also go to the concierge to arrange activities like helicopter tours and Bio Bay kayaking and such (note that resort-arranged activities usually cost some multiple of what a comparable tour costs if you booked it yourself through e.g. TripAdvisor or aviator but if you’re staying at the Dorado, you are probably not planning a budget vacation anyway).
Food: We had breakfast every morning at Positivo. Highly recommend the chicken sausage (get it as a side), the smoothie, and the French toast (not usually a French toast fan but wow this blew my mind). We also had dinner at Encanto and Melao. I would definitely recommend Encanto over Melao because (1) Encanto was right by the beach whereas Melao overlooked the golf course or something and (2) Encanto’s seafood game was really strong; highly recommend the gambas al ajillo and the lobster.

The amenities are wonderful, the spa was fantastic and the food was excellent.
The service we received from the time we arrived until check out was outstanding. I would recommend this resort to anyone. We were really impressed with all of the staff and their desire to make our visit special.
They are also eco friendly so that is really important to us too.
t should be noted that this property is working hard to become a full-fledged eco-friendly resort. I noticed the compact fluorescent light bulbs in the rooms and the signs asking to conserve water by holding on to the same towels and sheets for more than one day.
I asked around and, sure enough, they also have an extensive recycling program for their waste.
This type of commitment matters to many travelers.

The grounds are very well maintained and clean. The room we were in was spacious, had beautiful tile, a luxurious shower with heated floor, and a TV in the mirror! The bed was beyond comfortable, I laid down and accidentally fell asleep.
Just home from 4 days on this gorgeous, eco-conscious property. The attention to detail & service at the St. Regis is unparalleled. This sprawling natural setting feels private thanks to a thoughtful & discreet layout.
The staff was available 24/7 & facilitated our entire stay from checking us into our airlines to taking the roof on & off our Jeep rental.
Everyone was amazing in the Valet department & it’s obvious why Supervisor Orlando has his position. He was a complete delight to chat with & beyond helpful during departure.
This is a beautiful hotel, well appointed rooms, magnificent location, great attention to details and Eco friendly to its environment.
The staff we very polite, always greeting us, first class all round.
