Lesbiangaybisexual and transgender (LGBT) rights in the United States have evolved in recent decades. However, LGBT Americans may still face some legal and many social challenges not experienced by non-LGBT residents, particularly in states with large conservative populations, such as in the Deep South; in rural areas; and in some Native American tribal nations.

U.S. federal law does not explicitly include protections against discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity. In June 2020, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that sexual orientation and gender identity are included under “sex” as a prohibited ground of employment discrimination in the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

Same-sex sexual activity between consenting adults has been legal since the New York v. Onofre case in 1980. Same-sex marriage has been legal statewide since 2011, with some cities recognizing domestic partnerships between same-sex couples since 1998.

Fire Island is a thin Atlantic Ocean barrier island off the southern shore of Long Island, New York. It’s known for protected beaches interspersed with seasonal resort communities. On the western tip, Robert Moses State Park offers picnic spots, pitch-and-putt golf and access to the 19th-century Fire Island Lighthouse. It’s also the only area of the island accessible by car.

Sharing Bathrooms — Not a big deal. Four (4) bathrooms for ten (10) rooms. Not sure how booked they were at the time, but I didn’t run into a single other occupant.

Continental Breakfast — You get the basic choices: bagels, donuts, crumb cake, coffee, OJ.

But, let me just tell you…the bagels were pretty damn good, and I’m from NJ, so I know good bagels.

The donuts and other pastries were also very good. The coffee did the trick.

Gay Friendly — The manager (or owner?) was very nice, and he asked us why we chose Ocean Beach over the Pines or Cherry Grove.

It was a normal, no frills or chills hotel experience, and we were grateful for it.

Proximity — Ocean Beach is pretty damn small, and everything is within a short walking distance of everything else.

But, Clegg’s is literally right off the ferry.

We had to walk about 20 steps to get to the front door.

Very convenient, especially if you’ve got a lot of stuff with you (unlike us).

IN CONCLUSION, stay at Clegg’s if you’re looking for convenience, no-frills, and delicious pastries every morning.

The room I stayed in was very clean, comfy, and had a relaxing vibe. I highly recommend that you stay at this hotel if you’re visiting Fire Island.

Our gracious host Tyler was extremely accommodating and a true testament to hospitality professionals.

When visiting Fire Island you would be well served by staying at the Clegg’s Hotel and enjoying the views, spacious and well accommodated rooms and impeccable service provided by the owner Tyler.

Truly a first class lodging experience.

This is a fantastic hotel located steps away from the ferry in Ocean Beach.

The management and workers are extremely nice and helpful, and the rooms are exactly what one would need when staying at Fire Island.

The point of going to FI is not to sit in a room and watch TV all day; it is to enjoy the beach, ride a bike (which Clegg’s provides), grab a drink, and enjoy FI and what it has to offer. Highly recommend.

Why You Should NOT Book Clegg’s Hotel

Terrible furniture, loud even off season, and terrible uncomfortable beds.

The bathrooms are communal but clean. The owners are nice but they need to spruce this place up. The location is great. It’s literally five steps from the ferry exit. You can walk to the ocean beach in moments. Fire Island is terrific

The location was amazing with views of the ocean and the bay. It also had a lot of bedrooms which was a plus.

Why You Should Book Robbins Rest Retreat

For the money we paid, I was disappointed that the accommodations weren’t more updated.

There were windows in the bedrooms missing screens which made it really stuffy and the sheets that were on the bed were actually stained.

Video Review of The Rockaway Hotel

Continental and à la carte breakfast options are available every morning at The Rockaway Hotel.

The Rockaway Hotel is your urban beach getaway with a new view of New York City. Our unparalleled focus on high service, amenities and recreational relaxation creates an accessible respite whether you are a lifelong New Yorker or just here for a visit.
Why You Should Book The Rockaway Hotel
We specialize in informal luxury, and custom guest experience elevated by curated art installations and cultural activations.
The Rockaway Hotel: Retro, eclectic, and calming.
Though each piece of furniture or accessory is unique in shape or story, the beach dictates that materials and textures should not be too precious — teak, linen, wool, leather and rattan.
We believe that the design of a space is fundamental in influencing the way a guest feels, so it was our goal to unify a soothing palette with an energizing style.
Architectural forms, textural details, curvy accessories, and bold shapes are at play in every space in the hotel, but are not without a touch of our signature Scandinavian design approach.
The Rockaway Hotel will be a perfect getaway from the hustle of the city without losing the vitality we all crave.

The beauty and craftsmanship of the hotel is only outmatched by its location and incredible and caring staff.

The furniture and furnishings in the lobby, room, poolside lounge and rooftop are modern and keep with the beachy vibe.

We had brunch by the pool and were beyond impressed with the quality and simple, yet diverse, variety of drinks and food.

Hats off to the chef for an incredible meal. Definitely try the chocolate mousse.

The Rockaway Hotel is a phenomenal place in the ideal location with beach and city views all around and we will definitely be back

The service was phenomenal along with the food and views. I relaxed at the cabana all day and took advantage of the heated pool and lunch. I must say it was better than my timeshare resort in Cancun.

I enjoyed the tuna poke, the mezz platter and of course the NY strip steak. All were beyond delicious.

The after dinner drinks were enjoyed on the rooftop (bayside).

Although I am very familiar with that view being a local resident, I especially enjoyed the wide panoramic aspect with the height of the rooftop.

I am so happy the have such a special place here in my hometown, and a place to not only enjoy alone, but bring my guests when they come to visit.

The staff, managers and owners were all very welcoming and attentive, without being intrusive.

Phenomenal place that appears to already be successful.

I felt safe I could see that pandemic guidelines were followed. I hope it continues to be successful, we need this in our community!!!

Rockaway Sites, come and support this excellent addition to our hometown.

Make sure to visit the pool and rooftop when you’re visiting! In a city as large as New York, it’s rare to find a pool at hotel that has food service as well as access to daybeds and cabanas.
The food was also surprisingly great for pool side, and the staff was super friendly.
It seemed like it was kid friendly although most of the guests were adults.
The rooftop had views of New York City, Jamaica bay, and the ocean which were incredible.
We saw the most amazing sunset the night we ate there. The food was delicious and great for sharing. I heard they were also having movie nights which would be super fun.

Rockaway Beach NY is an interesting place nestled into the southeastern most corner of New York City with the Atlantic Ocean on one side and Jamaica Bay on the other.

You could rent a bungalow and spend the entire summer here or come “down for the day” (or DFD as the locals refer to it).

In recent history, Rockaway was ravaged by Superstorm Sandy but in the wake of this tragedy much of the infrastructure was rebuilt beach-side, and an amazing evolution has taken place.

The Rockaway peninsula has some of the most beautiful beaches in the northeast and is one of only a handful of beachfront communities in NYC.

It is also the only place in NYC for both locals and transplants to SURF!

Nearly 5 million people visit the peninsula every year and is home to a diverse group of residents from many walks of life.

Bohemians to bankers, surfers to social workers, NYPD, FDNY and IEBW alongside a growing population of “new Rockaway” residents; families and single young adults that are looking for the beach life but within spitting distance by subway or ferry to Manhattan and Brooklyn.

In some cases, this is much to the chagrin of the Rockaway lifers who you will commonly hear touting their family’s long heritage that is slowly being eroded by this penetration and the ensuing increase in cost of living urban flight brings, despite the increase in real estate value.

But what has become quite evident is the elevation of the food and drink options in this ‘hood and now, with the addition of The Rockaway and it’s luxurious accommodations and gourmet menu, the evolution of the Rockaways is now firmly taken hold.

As NY Mets radio sportscaster Howie Rose says “put it in the books!”, because with this beautiful property, Rockaway Beach is now officially a destination again.

Why You Should NOT Book The Rockaway Hotel

Beautiful, brand new hotel, but the staff, although trying hard, does not have their act together. The rooms are nice but very tiny, as are the bathrooms.
Hopefully when they get themselves more organized, it will be a more pleasant experience for future guests.
I wish them luck but would not recommend staying there as of yet.
