Guide to Gay Friendly Hotels in Austin, TX

Lesbiangaybisexual and transgender (LGBT) rights in the United States have evolved in recent decades. However, LGBT Americans may still face some legal and many social challenges not experienced by non-LGBT residents, particularly in states with large conservative populations, such as in the Deep South; in rural areas; and in some Native American tribal nations.

U.S. federal law does not explicitly include protections against discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity. In June 2020, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that sexual orientation and gender identity are included under “sex” as a prohibited ground of employment discrimination in the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people in the U.S. state of Florida may face legal challenges not experienced by non-LGBT residents. Same-sex sexual activity became legal in the state after the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision in Lawrence v. Texas on June 26, 2003, and same-sex marriage has been legal in the state since January 6, 2015.
However, some localities in Texas have ordinances that provide a variety of legal protections and benefits to LGBT people. Despite Texas’ reputation as a socially conservative state, a majority of Texans support same-sex marriage and anti-discrimination laws for LGBT people.
Austin has a long history of being a  gay friendly town and in downtown we can find a few gay friendly bars as well as  Rain, Oilcan Harry’s & Cheer Up Charlies are the most famous gay bars in Austin, TX.
Austin is the state capital of Texas, an inland city bordering the Hill Country region. Home to the University of Texas flagship campus, Austin is known for its eclectic live-music scene centered around country, blues and rock. Its many parks and lakes are popular for hiking, biking, swimming and boating. South of the city, Formula One’s Circuit of the Americas raceway has hosted the United States Grand Prix.

The staff was friendly and attentive to any of my needs, everyone from the valet staff to Dillon the desk agent who checked me in was amazing. The location of the hotel cant be beat, it is a 2 minute walk to the bars, clubs and restaurants in downtown Austin which has a little bit of something for everyone (Irish pubs, fancy eateries, gay bars, live music, etc). The room was spotless, bed was comfy, and just generally a great stay.

The hotel is very trendy with modern decor, and has a fun Vegas vibe with music playing throughout. The lobby which is called the Living Room is a fun, comfortable place to hang out and access the internet. Staff regularly asks you if you need anything.

My room was amazing, I didn’t want to leave. Lighting was cool, furnishings were modern, colorful and stylish, bed was fabulous, and had a nice 32 inch or so HDTV. The bathroom was awesome, with a beautiful, sexy (how else to describe it) shower. There is no door in the shower area, so you have to be comfortable with your roommate. Don’t worry the toilet area has a door.

The pool area is definitely a party, people watching area. It is only 3 feet at the deepest, so not much swimming. Its a social pool not a swimming pool. Bar and food is available at the pool.

Easy access to some great restaurants and coffee shops. I thought it was easy walking distance to downtown, the Capitol (although a good walk), the bats, and sixth street bars. Gay nightlife is just a block and half away.

I can’t imagine a better choice when staying in downtown Austin.

2. Austin Motel 3* – Gay Friendly Hotels Austin TX

Austin Motel
Austin Motel

Austin Motel is 0.9 miles from Austin Convention Center and 1.6 miles from Capitol Building. This motel offers free parking on-site and a swimming pool.

All rooms feature a flat-screen TV, telephone and a desk with chair. Free WiFi is provided.

You will find a 24-hour front desk at the property. On-site laundry facilities are available. Complimentary coffee is offered in the lobby daily for guests to enjoy.

Located south of the Colorado River, this historic, quirky motel dates back to 1938 and is within a 4-minute drive of popular South Congress Avenue and a 6-minute drive from the State Capitol.

Individually decorated single and double rooms include private bathrooms, some with showers only and some with whirlpool tubs. Some suites add a second room and sleep up to 4. All rooms have cable TV.

WiFi is available throughout the grounds. Outdoor amenities include a kidney-shaped swimming pool and free parking.

The Austin Motel opened its doors in 1938, and its landmark neon sign has been brightening South Congress Avenue ever since. This recently remodeled 41-room motel, with classic motor court exterior, is centrally located in the heart of Austin’s most interesting cultural district and is close to downtown, the Congress bat bridge and other area attractions.
The iconic motel’s amenities include a swimming pool with pool bar, communal hangout spaces, free WiFi, flat-screen TVs, and complimentary parking. The 24-hour reception desk and retail store caters to guest needs, offering snacks, drinks and interesting mementos.
Classic motor court motel-a bargain gem with a great location. Funky and eclectic with super friendly staff. We stay here whenever we are in Austin. We like the small cosy rooms and the motel has been nicely modernized.
Stayed there for two nights in June, king size room with lots of colour, red was the prevalent colour scheme, even the little fridge was red. Room itself wasn’t fancy and not overly large. Everything worked as it was supposed to, but I found the bathroom a bit tired and not as spotlessly clean as I would have liked. Staff was friendly and the pool was well maintained with plenty of lounging chairs. Well located on South Congress.
Austin Motel is on South Congress in the absolute BEST neighborhood in Austin. If you are visiting Austin and want to be able to walk to cool coffee shops, restaurants and funky shopping, this is the place for you. Very minimalist, retro chic….just like some of the iconic renovated places on Route 66. Highly recommend.

This hotel will appeal to those who appreciate outlandish, eccentric, with a mix of modern and retro styles (as I did). The handsome narrow stairs to the upper level even have a hint of Spanish colonial. The room and property are kept very tidy and the customer service is very professional. The pool was good for cooling off but not say for exercise. Coffee is available in the main lobby. Joann’s restaurant is right next door and even though I found it a bit pricey for what it is, I did enjoy their breakfast tacos.

I think downtown or downtown adjacent (say, Clarksville) might have a slight edge in walking proximity to sites of interest and amenities but South Congress is quite good. The South Congress location is near ice cream and a number of interesting dining options including the well-known Torchy’s Tacos are within walking distance. Another plus is from the hotel to see the bats emerge from South Congress bridge is also a 10-15 minute walk (I chose a park under the bridge to the right hand side coming from the Austin Motel).

To get to Barton Springs or downtown activities like the Bullock Museum of Texas History, though, South Congress is a bit of a schlep, so Uber is advisable especially in the heat.

We were in Austin for Gay Pride and stayed at the new and beautiful Fairmont hotel. Everything about the hotel is very thoughtful, but we’d especially like to recognize Gold Lounge attendant Victor. He was very personable and helped us plan our time in Austin. On the night of the parade we missed dessert hour so he delivered some to our room.
First time in Austin, the Fairmont was located in the perfect spot near rainy street and 6th street. The hotel was clean, staff was attentive and the place smelled amazing haha. Highly recommend the Fairmont. Only thing that I didn’t like was how expensive parking was on sight. It was about 36 dollars a day.

Beautiful lobby, clean, doing all the safety precautions for Covid. Decorations were exquisite. Room very spacious and clean, VERY comfy bed and pillows! Super hot water for shower.

Nice lobby bar and actually had an instrumental guitar player one evening! Very fast elevators with a 4-person minimum. Beautiful pool and bar but unfortunately due to the weather, we couldn’t enjoy it but a few people were swimming or lounging in the hot tub!

Staff super friendly and helpful, even held our luggage on check-out day so we could have brunch before leaving.

Walking distance to Rainey Street, Moonshine Grill, and many other restaurants in the area.

If you’re looking to check out Austin, the place to stay is at the Fairmont. This luxury hotel has all the amenities you’ll need and want. The decor is beautiful. The restaurants & bars within the hotel are great. It is blocks from Rainey street, next door to the convention center and walking distance to most venues. The employees at the Fairmont are awesome…always very helpful and cordial even if they just see you walking the hallways! They give off a really friendly environment.
The staff were extremely friendly and anticipated our every need. The hotel itself is incredibly beautiful and our corner room was perfect. We enjoyed our time at the Fulton bar and the poolside bar. The food was phenomenal at both! Good Things took care of our coffee and breakfast. This has become an annual trip to Austin because of the Fairmont and we wouldn’t ever think of staying anywhere else! Thank you so much for your hospitality.
