Lesbiangaybisexual and transgender (LGBT) rights in the United States have evolved in recent decades. However, LGBT Americans may still face some legal and many social challenges not experienced by non-LGBT residents, particularly in states with large conservative populations, such as in the Deep South; in rural areas; and in some Native American tribal nations.

U.S. federal law does not explicitly include protections against discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity. In June 2020, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that sexual orientation and gender identity are included under “sex” as a prohibited ground of employment discrimination in the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

Same-sex sexual activity has been legal in Alabama since 2003, when the United States Supreme Court decision in Lawrence v. Texas struck down all state sodomy laws.

1. Hotel Indigo – Birmingham Five Points S – UAB 4* – Gay Friendly Hotels Birmingham, Alabama

Hotel Indigo - Birmingham Five Points S - UAB
Hotel Indigo – Birmingham Five Points S – UAB

Located in the Birmingham Five Points South District, this Alabama hotel features a continental breakfast and free WiFi. Guests will be 1 minutes’ walk from University of Alabama-Birmingham and within a 13-minute drive of Samford University.

A cable TV, desk, and coffee-making facilities are featured in all rooms. A small refrigerator and sofa bed are included in select suites at the Alabama Hotel Highland Downtown.

A business centre with fax and photocopying facilities allows travelling professionals to stay productive and accessible. A fitness centre and free weekday newspaper are provided as well at Hotel Highland Downtown.

Set in the Five Points South area, this polished hotel in an art deco style building is 2 miles from the Birmingham Zoo and 1 minute on foot from a bus stop.

The sophisticated rooms provide rainfall showers, in addition to 49-inch flat-screen TVs and complimentary Wi-Fi. The 1-bedroom suites have living rooms, mini fridges and Keurig coffee makers. Room service is available.

Amenities consist of a restaurant/bar, a fitness room and a business center.

The Hotel Indigo Birmingham is located in a landmark Art Deco-style building dating from the early 1930s in the city’s historic Five Points South neighborhood. Originally designed for medical offices and across from the first apothecary in Birmingham, the building became a hotel in the 1980s, but still retains its original medical insignia etched above the elevator doors. The hotel’s design acknowledges the building’s rich history, while incorporating modern amenities, like hardwood floors, spa-inspired showers, luxury bath amenities and linens.
We’re also adding some exciting (and tasty) options to an area already known as one of the city’s premier dining and entertainment districts. The Rx Lounge pays homage to the medical apothecary theme and provides prescriptions in the form of food and beverage curated by acclaimed Chef Niko Romero.

The property was originally a medical building, so the design team used its history to create a cool, hip, modern, apothecary theme, complete with front desk staff in white lab coats. The spacious apartment-like rooms are awesome with a cool modern boutique hotel vibe. It can be pricey as the rates fluctuate depending on local events and conferences.

The fun apothecary motif is carried through to the cocktail lounge. On display is a myriad of test tubes with brightly colored liquid and various lab equipment. It completely draws you into their “cocktail lab” for an enjoyable concoction!

The hotel is located in the trendy hip Five Points district so there are plenty of places within walking distance to eat and enjoy craft beer and cocktails. Valet parking is pricey but I recommend it, as it solves the problem of downtown parking.

The location of the hotel is great for 5 Points area. There are many restaurants and bars to enjoy within a very short walking distance. Our room was located on the top floor so there were no noise issues for us. Our room and bathroom were very clean. Staff was very accommodating from check in to letting us borrow an extra phone charger. (There is one also included in the room mounted to the clock).
We had plans to visit several museums Monday but learned that Monday was a closed day for them. It was a rainy day with nothing really to do so we asked for a late checkout which the desk generously agreed to, so we enjoyed sleeping in on a wonderfully comfy bed that I wish we could have taken home with us. Only negative in our experience would be the hotel restaurant for breakfast- the food was greasy and cold after quite a wait. Waitress was sweet but she kept messing things up; so don’t go there for breakfast. Walk down the road on a three minute walk to The Pancake House.
The beds were so comfortable and the pillows the best. The decor was great. The building was a medical building some time in years past and Indigo likes to maintain historical elements in their vision for decorations.
The room was spectacular. The bed and bedding/pillows were as comfortable as you can imagine! And the view of Birmingham was to die for.

Aloft Birmingham Soho Square is a hip new hotel in downtown Homewood, Alabama. Enjoy the chic amenities of Soho Square near our hotel. Walk to great shopping and local restaurants.

It is located on the outskirts of downtown Birmingham. Very quiet neighborhood with several nice restaurant options within walking distance.

Check in was quick and the staff was great. Recognized status within the Bonvoy program and explained all the features of the property.

The rooms are standard across pretty much all aloft hotels, which is nice. You always know what you will get and how it is laid out. The rooms are a very European layout and design. Simple, yet functional and fun.

The hotel is located for easy access into downtown Birmingham or the corporate areas of Homewood. I would highly recommend this property when in the Birmingham area for business or pleasure.

There are also several farm to table restaurants nearby, as well as, other cuisines such as Thai. All very good and great service.

The hotel is slightly off the beaten path, but it is absolutely a hidden gem. It is located in Homewood, which is south of Birmingham. The staff were friendly, professional and helpful. Parking is located behind the hotel and the hotel doesn’t charge for parking. There are plenty of restaurant options within walking distance and the area is very friendly for walking. Vulcan park is a 5 minute drive away that offers great views of the Birmingham skyline.

Hotel is gay  friendly as well. Room was clean, fresh smelling and quiet.

Hotel was very clean, staff was friendly. Wonderful indoor pool and covered garage parking. Well stocked pantry area for a quick snack or something left behind. The only complaint, and it might be particular to our room, was the shower took over 5 minutes to get hot water and the pressure was very low. Beds were very comfortable.

Hand soap provided by hotel was excellent. Hotel is located in a quaint area of downtown but not very noisy and had shopping and restaurants close by. This is our new favorite hotel in Birmingham.

Super trendy, spacious rooms, and great amenities are all parts of what make this a great hotel to in which to stay.

However, the hotel is located within walking distance to several great restaurants, and we were only 10 minutes from The Summit which is full of great dining and shopping options. This is our new favorite hotel chain and we WILL return.

he bed was comfy, the shower awesome, and there was lots of stowage for our gear. The curtains provided complete blackout and we were able to sleep in. Never heard a sound from outside the room. Also good: I’m allergic to feathers and they gave us a room that is permanently de-feathered.

The only flaw was that the AC unit blows a strong stream of air right at bed level. That was a bit uncomfortable, but the comforter was nice and warm.

We ate at the restaurant, which had some nice live jazz and good food.

This was our first experience with Aloft hotels and we will definitely seek them out in the future.

he hotel was very convenient to the festivities. Easy to find, check in was very smooth, ample parking. The décor of the hotel is very nice. Lobby bar was lively. There was no complimentary breakfast however which is always a plus. Free wifi was nice. The room was nice. Great bathroom.

Gas grill for those guests who do not want to eat our every night!

This location is out of the way from the hustle and bustle of the city, yet awesome dining is close by, as well as other venues. The staff here is awesome, the rooms are great as well as this is a fairly priced location. I would category this location as home away from home.

For the price, I wasn’t expecting alot of amenities – and we were wrong. Continental breakfast was a full on buffet with fresh made waffles, eggs, breakfast ‘meat’ choice (sausage one morning, bacon another), oatmeal, yogurt, bakery items, juices, fruit, etc. There’s an outdoor swimming pool that opens Memorial day weekend, and an indoor fitness room, as well as a full use laundry room.

WiFi throughout the hotel. Quick grab drinks/snacks. And way so much more. The room itself was amazing – we got a king suite for under $80/night after taxes, and it was HUGE.

I was also impressed how quiet it was, no downtown city sounds at all, with a beautiful view of the foothills and night sky from our room. (I was actually shocked when we got back home, and realized our house in a country suburb gets more ‘city noise’ than the hotel room did!)

Best part though? The staff – smiling, friendly, full of compliments and always willing to help! Will definitely be staying here again and again in the future!

Check in was very fast and the clerk was very friendly and helpful. Room was clean and very comfortable. The bed was clean and comfortable. The hot breakfast included was delicious and a welcome bonus. We had a King room with a couch and desk and it was perfect for our needs!! Would recommend and will stay again if in the area.

The rooms were clean, the bed was comfortable. The front desk was nice. Great room for a great price. Will definitely be staying here again. Nice location as well. Breakfast buffet could have some improvement to it but, besides that I enjoyed my stay and would definitely recommend it.
