Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) rights in the United States have evolved in recent decades. However, LGBT Americans may still face some legal and many social challenges not experienced by non-LGBT residents, particularly in states with large conservative populations, such as in the Deep South; in rural areas; and in some Native American tribal nations.
U.S. federal law does not explicitly include protections against discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity. In June 2020, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that sexual orientation and gender identity are included under “sex” as a prohibited ground of employment discrimination in the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

The Waves is an excellent facility in a perfect location to both enjoy the ocean and beach and to walk into town. We have stayed in many places in Cannon Beach for over 30 years and The Waves ( Flagship Building) is among the top. We were in room 403 which was on the top floor. It had a very nice nook with a table and two comfortable chairs. Perfect for sitting and watching the beach and ocean. It also had a nice private deck.
The architectural arrangement of the individual rooms in this building is such that you have a real sense of privacy. Expansive windows look onto the beach but not into other rooms or balconies. The clearstory windows allow a lot of light into the rooms even on dreary days. The bathroom is very nice with amazing water pressure. The bathroom lights are harsh though – the very white white kind.
Not to take away from our room, but we looked into room 402 and felt, all things being equal it would be preferable. It’s a bit larger and has a slightly better view.
The Waves looks more like a condo development than a traditional motel. Our room looked a little older (recognizing that buildings on the beach age in dog years) but was clean and neat. We had ocean view – not panoramic but very nice, mini-kitchen, and a gas fireplace (a real plus). The Waves is a short walk from the restaurants and shopping in Cannon Beach and a healthy walk from Haystack Rock.
Our room was comfortable. Our private deck overlooked the north-west so we saw nearby rock formations and part of the sunset. The stove is a four-burner electric. There is a microwave and decent sized fridge. The bathroom is clean and fairly newly done.
The front desk staff was pleasant and helpful. The location is central to the town and steps from the beach. We would come here again.

Our third floor room had a panoramic view of the ocean, with the sand starting perhaps 20 feet from the comfortable balcony. It was cold as the dickens the night we stayed so we didn’t use it much, but in warm weather for sunsets I’m sure it’s amazing. If you had a crossbow you could probably hit Haystack Rock from your balcony…it’s RIGHT there. Pretty much any room in that oceanfront building is gonna give you that view. Ask for one of those.
The room itself is comfortable, good bed, great gas fireplace. The bath products are Aveda which is pretty chic. Room service and there’s a full restaurant just steps away and even closer to Haystack Rock.
