Guide to Gay Friendly Hotels in Chicago, Illinois (2023 Updated)

Search and book Lesbian and Gay friendly hotels Chicago, IL.

Lesbiangaybisexual and transgender (LGBT) rights in the United States have evolved in recent decades. However, LGBT Americans may still face some legal and many social challenges not experienced by non-LGBT residents, particularly in states with large conservative populations, such as in the Deep South; in rural areas; and in some Native American tribal nations.

U.S. federal law does not explicitly include protections against discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity. In June 2020, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that sexual orientation and gender identity are included under “sex” as a prohibited ground of employment discrimination in the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

Illinois is seen as one of the most progressive states in the United States in regard to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) rights and often viewed as one of the most liberal states in the Midwestern United States.
Chicago has a long history of being a  gay friendly town and in downtown we can find a few gay friendly bars as well as Sidetrack or Progress Bar Chicago are the most famous gay bars in Chicago, IL.

I have stayed here twice now and have been happy both times. The rates are reasonable and you are in a great location. The train is literally steps away (which does make for a bit of noise but with the AC on you couldn’t hear it at all). The area is safe and definitely walkable. The hotel is simple, so don’t expect to be pampered but it’s clean!
The location is great – right next to a CTA stop, so even on a freezing night in January, it was easy to get places. The neighborhood has lots of affordable places to eat and shop. It is a residential neighborhood as opposed to a touristy one. Our room faced a brick wall, but that meant no street noise.

The breakfast is basic – just coffee, juice, boxed cereal, toast – but enough to keep you going while you wait for your teen son to wake up (are you sensing a theme here?) Lots of places within a block or two to get a heartier breakfast, though.

There are few amenities here. No business center, no place to use a computer or printer, no exercise room, no restaurant. But it is a very good basic hotel.

It’s a short train ride into the city and located steps away from the station. The Belmont area has everything we need. The hotel is a small, boutique hotel that provides comfort at an affordable price. There is a modest “breakfast” of packaged items, fruit and coffee available each morning.
Staff is friendly. Rooms are small but comfortable and arranged as suites with sitting and sleeping areas each having their own spaces. Bathrooms are small. Radiator heat can be hard to regulate. Hotel is clean and inviting. It has a teeny-tiny elevator that fits no more than three people. No pool or gym. We really like this hotel and fits the bill for us every time we travel to Chicago. Good value and comfort.

Clean rooms, helpful staff, hotel self parking is covered, very convenient, it is connected to the hotel. Hotel is connected to the McCormick convention center. Room prices for downtown Chicago is very competitive for the service and quality of this hotel.

Check in and room was quite nice. I asked for a room with a view of Chicago and had a great view from Room 2413 of the Chicago downtown area and the Navy Pier and Lake Michigan. Room had empty refrigerator for placing leftovers and water. No robe or slippers. Hairdryer and iron were present.

This place looked like it would be safe, decent, not too far from the downtown stuff, and had a reasonable price compared to others in downtown. It turned out exactly what I searched for. The hotel was even nicer than I expected. Very fancy, upscale lobby. The hallway carpets were a bit worn, but not bad. The room was very nice. I paid for an upgrade to a “city view” and it was worth it. It was a little farther to downtown than I expected, I thought it would be a fairly quick walk, but it was not – took Uber which was around $7. But overall, very happy I picked this hotel and I would go back again.

Very large hotel with plenty of space to roam. Rooms are good. Breakfast buffet was good. Not too far from downtown Chicago, but far enough to take a cab. Hotel is attached to the McCormick event center via a sky walk. There were other skywalks connected to it that led you to other hotels as well. Staff was great too.

The staff was friendly and prompt answering all questions regarding marathon shuttle information and nearby dining recommendations.

The rooms were clean, we stayed on a higher floor with a view. The rooms were a good size, more than enough room for 2 adults.

The dining options were great, we ate at The Arc and Market, both were both great and convenient since we were tight on time.

The location was convenient since the expo was at McCormick Place, however with two small kids, we might opt to stay a little more centralized next time since little legs get tired easily. We took Lyft a couple times but will look into public transportation next trip.

Tips: the Chicago Trolley is a great way to see the city. Lots of good information and handy to jump on and off as you please.

Some may consider the location of the hotel as a drawback. It is somewhat far from downtown Chicago. To get to downtown, you need to take a taxi; or, you can take public transportation. I took public transportation (the L and the bus). Public transportation is easy and fast – faster than taking a taxi or Uber or Lift! By taking public transportation, I was able to get to know the city a bit better.
I consider the hotel’s distance from downtown an advantage, as it is away from the noisy downtown area, while being close enough for a quick ride to downtown.

This is a boutique hotel, so there are not many rooms. This can be a good reason to stay at Ivy Hotel. Clean, nice rooms within walking distance to Michigan Ave.
The Ivy is one of our absolute favorite hotels in Chicago. It’s small, quaint, stylish, and VERY well located with only 63 guest rooms with maybe five rooms/suites per floor. Our King suite was spacious with a separate bed and living room area. It was quiet, as we did not hear other guests or too much street/city noise. The bathroom was large and lux with a big comfy soaking tub, a separate shower and double vanity. Good water pressure and plenty of hot water. Big fluffy high quality bath towels. The overall decor is modern and very attractive; pictures from their website are true representation. Our bed was DREAMY with crisp, fresh smelling top-notch linens and wonderful pillows. The beds are platform style and very low to the ground (watch your shins!).
The Ivy is a low rise (16 stories) compared to the surrounding buildings so views are land locked and pretty basic. We always request a room facing the street to view the cityscape below but I’m thinking the non-street facing rooms may be more quiet without direct access to the street if you are concerned about that. We had plenty of natural light from the wall-to-wall floor to ceiling windows. Be mindful of your privacy as you can clearly see into the buildings across the street so of course they can see you! Nice automated blackout drapes.

There was a desk and chair to set up our laptop and the WiFi and overall connectivity in the suite was good and supported our needs. Very tiny closet space; no way to free-hang coats or dresses due to the safe being in the way. Big TV in the living area as well as the bedroom area. Small wet bar, coffee maker and mini fridge to store personal drinks and snacks. Must request ice. Nice bar in the lobby for evening cocktails and they have a fabulous outdoor terrace (seasonal and weather permitting).

The service was excellent although somewhat short staffed as there was often only one person manning the front desk and they were the same peeps that would deliver extra towels and ice so it took a bit of a wait for requested items. However, every staff member we encountered where incredibly friendly, welcoming and helpful.

The location of this hotel is EXCELLENT and perfect for a downtown Chicago experience; close to many restaurants, bars and shoppingMichigan Ave and the heart of the Magnificent Mile is just two short blocks/six minute scenic stroll away. Great deep dish at Gino’s East (10 min scenic walk), wonderful healthy flame grilled Peri-Peri chicken right next door at Nando’s, and a perfect steak and cocktails on the corner at The Capital Grille. Great old school Chicago tavern on the corner and a Whole Foods, Target and Walgreens 10 min walk away. Tip: we always UBER to Lincoln Park for deep dish at Pequod’s; not fancy but definitely FAB! Just sayin…

The Ivy is lovely; we LOVE staying here! Enjoy.

The best parts of this hotel were the location and the decor/ feel of the place. It seemed to be a renovated old apartment building. Loved the decorated wallpaper behind the bed and the natural light in the bathroom. Room was comfortable and very clean. Room and lobby had a hip/hostel/ international feel to it. As a gay guy, this was a great location – very close to Boystown area with gay bars. within walking distance of many restaurants, Target, Divvy bike rental stations, Trader Joes right across the street. The lake and park are a 15 min walk away, with great views of downtown.
It was gay-pride weekend and for the most part, no problems with our personal space getting violated or harassed. A lot had to do with the accessibility of the hotel. I think it was quiet for a busy part of the city and the only recommendation is king-sized bed availability.
I took a mini-vacation to Chicago, a getaway to do Boy’s Town and dance at Charlie’s. Hotel Versey Days Inn was the right location and the right price  and I didn’t expect much more than that. Turned out to be a much nicer room than I anticipated. The staff was always cheerful and helpful, directing me to shopping and dining in the neighborhood.
This is an older 4 story hotel at Clark in Diversey, just a couple of blocks from Lincoln Park, the Lake, and Boystown. Not far from Wrigley Park, either. The rooms have been nicely renovated, and the Business Plus rooms are particularly nice, with microwave and refrigerator. There are MANY good places to eat in the area, and a good variety of night life.
A great location for gay travelers. You’ll also find lots of international guests. The have the longest hours on the continental breakfast of any hotel I’ve ever seen–6:30-11:00. There is a good variety of offerings at the breakfast, as well. Friendly staff. Valet parking is a bit pricey, but you don’t really need a car, the El is about 5 blocks away.
Top notch service here at the Hotel Versey. Staff was Amazing. Room was great. Older building but room was still fantastic. Price point was good considering it’s location to Wrigleyville and to Lincoln Park as well as the Gold Coast. Definitely plan to stay here on my next visit to Chicago.
Room is similar to other big city boutique hotel rooms, but oddly shaped (resembled the shape of Nevada). Tiny bathroom with no room for hair and makeup stuff, even though it has the only mirror in the room. Small desk with Nespresso machine that we couldn’t get to work, but it was okay because there’s a Starbucks and Stan’s Donuts steps away.
This location is super convenient to axe throwing, a movie theater, dining, shopping, stage plays, bus routes. Parking is available at the mall behind the hotel which is perfectly adequate. The area felt really safe, and we had no problem walking the neighborhood. I wouldn’t mind staying there again.

Each room at Eurostars Magnificent Mile offers a mini-bar with chilled wine and floor-to-ceiling windows.

A fitness center is located on site, along with concierge services.

Set in the lively River North neighborhood, this polished hotel is a mile from both Millennium Park and its iconic reflective bean sculpture, and the Art Institute of Chicago.

Featuring floor-to-ceiling windows, the sleek rooms offer Wi-Fi access, flat-screen TVs, minibars, and tea and coffee making facilities. Suites add living rooms and/or rainfall showers. An upgraded suite comes with a gym and a bar.

Amenities consist of a chic restaurant, a lobby bar and a rooftop cocktail bar with a terrace. There’s also a fitness center and a posh spa with a sauna. Parking and breakfast are available, both for a surcharge.

Eurostars Magnificent Mile is located in the heart of Chicago, in the prestigious River North neighborhood, surrounded by the shops, bars and restaurants of the iconic Magnificent Mile. The hotel features an industrial-chic style with exposed concrete ceilings and avant-garde elements which contrast with the wooden floors and soft tones of all the rooms, creating a cozy atmosphere.
Moreover, there is a wellness area offering a wide variety of beauty and massage treatments, as well as a sauna. Guests can also enjoy dinner at the Portsmouth restaurant, which serves fish and seafood, or end the day while tasting a cocktail on the Apogee terrace.
I personally loved the exposed concrete urban feel of room, small balcony but atleast a balcony with view. Up to date decorations and bath, we were fans of double sided shower to be either curtained off or open for your loved one to see****. Loved the bed, the nice service everywhere except for the first guy who took our luggage to hold after checkout on july 28th sun at 12pm. the second guy was nice. All service was to our satisfaction especially the door man they rocked and were always pleasant. Very gay friendly hotel!! Reasonably priced room service. Good location, 2 block walk to chicago redline L stop. Very happy with stay and wouldn’t want to stay anywhere else.
We had three nights here as part of our big gay honeymoon road trip across the States. It’s a fabulous hotel with fabulous staff and fabulous rooms… both the ones we were given.

his boutique hotel is conveniently situated within walking distance to all the main attractions in Chicago, restaurants and subway.

Check in is 3pm and check out is 12pm. Check in itself was quick and painless and the staff were very friendly and helpful.

The hotel has a restaurant, a trendy bar, spa, gym and rooftop terrace but we didn’t visit those so unable to comment further.

The rooms themselves (ours was a king deluxe) are spotlessly clean, with a king sized bed, mini bar, air conditioning, safe, iron/ironing board, big LCD TV with cable channels, complimentary toiletries, robes/slippers and a huge rainfall shower. Our bedding was changed daily as were the towels (even though we hung them up), so housekeeping was probably a bit over-efficient.

There is also complimentary WiFi throughout the hotel which was decent and fast.

Distance from O’hare airport is roughly 16 miles and an Uber cost approx $30.

Overall; an enjoyable stay and good value for money.

Eurostars offers a descent accommodation within downtown Chicago. Within a walking distant to some of the nice restaurants and shops around Magnificent Mile. I hardly used a taxi or bus on the trip.

Buffet Breakfast is quite basic – cereal, yoghurt, breads, scrambled eggs, bacon, sausages, fruits and juices. However I think there is opportunity for you to order more options if the menu. Descent minibar with a wide selection of wines. The gym facility is quite small but felt it was quite adequate for the occasional crowd I encountered.

The room was comfy. I will likely visit again but may consider other options for the price. Spent my first 3 nights but did the remainder nights at Hyatt Regency and it made me wonder a bit on the pricing vs value.
