Can highly recommend the Novotel Christchurch, Cathedral Square, if going to Christchurch. We stayed three nights in an executive room on the 13th floor.

The central location makes it very easy to get around on foot to see central Christchurch. We got put on the top floor overlooking the sadly derelict Christchurch cathedral.

The rooms are perfectly adequate and have the very quirky washbasin partially in the room as people mention in reviews. As an aside it makes me laugh that people find the wash basin a negative. Really for me a deal breaker when looking for lodgings is the room rate and centrality of the location, not the wash basin!!

The hotel is about 20 mins from the airport if no traffic. We also got a great deal with go rentals on Expedia. $135 for 4 days Toyota Corolla. The go rentals cars are on a par with Avis etc. the only thing being u have to wait for the shuttle for go rentals. Watch also the $30 after hours pickup fee after 5pm.

Places to go to from Novotel are the venerable Ballantynes department store (7mins). This store is as good as David Jones Sydney imho and also the Riverside Market for scrumptious food. The market is just a few steps from Ballantynes in the revived cbd. The Scorpio bookshop in the bnz centre shops looked fabulous for an boutique independent book shop.

The room is a decent size with views of the city and cathedral. The bathroom can only be described as pokey. The toilet is separate to the shower area. The shower stall in a stand-in bath with a shower. Thankfully, they provide you with a non-slip mat. The big issue is that the bathroom sink is actually in the bedroom.

There is a sign on one of the doors on the desk marked MINIBAR. I was surprised to find that it did not contain a lot and no drinks because it was just a draw, not a fridge. I had to call and ask where the fridge was because the minibar list showed cold items were available. The mini bar fridge is hidden underneath the sink opposite the mirror.

Parking was easy and quite affordable, check-in was easy and our room was wonderful, modern and clean. We had a superior king room which overlooked the cathedral it was very comfortable and had great stations on their television.

The staff at front desk and the restaurant were very friendly and helpful. The hotel is close to convenience stores, numerous restaurants and parks. We took the city sightseeing bus and the stop is close by as well. Buffet breakfast is standard and not much variety if you are a vegetarian.

2. Ibis Christchurch 3*Gay Friendly Hotels Christchurch

Ibis Christchurch
Ibis Christchurch

Ibis Christchurch is centrally located in Hereford Street, along the beautiful Avon River. It is situated in the heart of the city, with Cashel Street Mall, High Street, corporate and government precincts and New Regent Street all within walking distance. All rooms offer satellite TV and a refrigerator. Free WiFi is available.

Ibis Christchurch offers 155 modern guest rooms and an intimate meeting room for business guests.

Ibis Christchurch is ready to welcome you. Adjacent to the new shopping heart of Christchurch, Cashell Mall. The “pop up” shopping precinct is the new vibrant heart of the city, featuring many new designer shops and modern cafes. Ibis Hotel Christchurch is very close to the famous Cathedral Square, the historic heart of the city providing easy access to the outer lying attractions and the airport. The Ibis features 155 contemporary rooms, restaurant OOPEN, a bar and meeting room.

Right in the heart of the CBD, easy walk to all the sights of the city, 100 meters to some great bars and restaurants along the Avon river. Nice big soft comfortable bed, compact room, small bench seating area and a work desk area, room was quiet and I had a great sleep.

The Ibis Christchurch hotel is perfectly located in the heart of the city of Christchurch (Garden City) , New Zealand and in a stone’s throw from Cathedral Square. This hotel is near to almost everything in Christchurch [e.g. to coffee shops, to shopping (for example RE-start shopping Mall), to Canterbury Museum, to Botanic Garden, etc.)

The hotel is right at the heart of Christchurch CBD which makes is a central location to anything you’d need- it’s all within walking distance.

The buffet breakfast at this hotel is great value (considering the lack of reasonably priced brunch spots in the immediate area).

Great location within the CBD with easy walking distance to locations of interest in the heart of the city, including Cathedral Square and the ReSTART Mall. The hop-on-hop-off tram stops very close by too.

This is an economy hotel located in a really central and excellent location and, so within walking distance to many great restaurants. For this reason, I did not eat at the hotel restaurant and prefer to explore different restaurants/cafes for my meals. This excellent location allowed me to make a quick trip to the supermarket before they close for the night and to the pharmacy before leaving for the airport in the morning.

As it is in the central location, I did not expect great views from the room and there wasn’t, as there were buildings all round, though not taller than the hotel. The rooms were clean, neat with all the amenities like kettle, ironing board, packets of coffee and tea, etc., although there were only basic amenities in the bathroom. I thought for this category of hotel, the size of the room was adequate. What I wanted was a clean room/bathroom, quiet environment for a good night sleep and a comfortable bed. I had all these. There was no loud noise from the street although my room faced the road.

So I am very happy with this hotel and will certainly return to stay there if I visit Christchurch again.

Yes, the bathrooms are small and storage space limited but what do you expect on a 3* hotel? I thought it was excellent. Good sized roomcomfortable beds, fridge, coffee making facilities and even an iron and board! TV has many channels too. Breakfast buffet has all you need and with nice outdoor seating. This hotel is in the best location. Can walk everywhere! Right in the heart of this growing, newer, modern Christchurch after all of its devastation. I would recommend this hotel.

The hotel is close to lots of restaurants and within walking distance of all the major tourist sites. The staff were all very welcoming and professional. Nicely decorated, well-equipped and very clean rooms with good beds. Also a nice reception area in the foyer with bar.

Very well-placed in the centre of the city, with lots of eateries and pleasant strolls within easy walking distance. Really helpful and smiley staff – quite a tonic after 36 hours of travelling – great shower to freshen you up and quiet, air-conditioned room with good view and very comfy bed to help alleviate the jet lag.

Breakfast was superb: huge selection, whether continental or full cooked is your thing (and the only hotel I’ve ever stayed at with fresh kiwi juice).

Rendezvous is close to everything you could want to do in Christchurch. All of the major sites are within walking distance and the hotel is surrounded by terrific eateries just across the street from Regent Street.

The classical tram stops next door and a very charming street with little shops and restaurants is just opposite of the hotel.
The whole centre of Christchurch is within easy walking distance.

Check in was very friendly and efficient. Valet parking at only $25 was excellent and upon leaving it did not take more than a few minutes before our car pulled up outside.

The room is a decent size, with -like almost all hotels in NZ- a very, very comfy bed. Bathroom is a good size too with an excellent shower.

Breakfast offered plenty of choice and everything was tasteful.

Lovely modern hotel with all the amenities. Rooms are spacious and clean. Great location within walking distance of shops and eateries. Sightseeing tram literally pulls up outside the hotel.

The room was a good size.  The air conditioner worked well. The bed/pillows were comfortable. The shower was a good size; however the pressure was not great. Also, the shower head was fixed on the wall and extremely high up on the wall, which made it difficult to aim. There was a nice large safe in the room. The refrigerator was stocked but there was room to hold a couple beverages.

The room was super clean, the bed was really comfortable with soft sheets. Towels were fluffy and shower was amazing, lovely toiletries. Cafetière coffee, great hairdryer. Well lit and space for a desk and chair, and a chair and coffee table. Staff were smart, polite and very helpful. Breakfast was good value for money. It was so quiet in the room too.
