Los Lagos Hotel and Spa was our first stop on our stay in Costa Rica and it was a perfect choice. Our comfortable, quiet room was situated toward the back of the property with a great view of Arenal Volcano. We could walk to the excellent restaurant if we chose but the shuttle buses ran frequently and were welcome when the weather was showery.
A high point of our stay was a horseback ride at the on-site stables. Our guide, Donnie, was terrific. He knew the horses as well as the trail we rode. We rode around the base of the volcano and Donnie’s description of the plants, birds and the history of Arenal was fascinating.
The property has so much to offer, dining is in a beautiful restaurant open terrace, which has a lovely feel to it. The food is good, not excellent, a little bit expensive for the quality, clean and attentive staff.
The hot springs are fabulous, clean and hot – also have several tubs in a jungle setting with a variety of temperatures from warm to hot. Loved this feature and well lit in the evening. did not try the food at the pool bar.
Our room was immaculate, spacious with an excellent shower with very hot water!
The grounds of this resort are outstanding and well maintained, there is an observation tower and hiking trail around a small lake, we enjoyed the 2 hr walk.
The Butterfly Garden, Frog enclosure, Leaf Aunt area, Crocodile display and gardens all enjoyable, there was even a sloth lounging in the trees.
We had an exceptional time on this properties ZIP Line, felt it was very good value for the price, and the boys that take you are a knowledgeable and fun group, Go for the photographer for the extra $10 so worth it!!
The hot springs and all of the pools were amazing and the grounds in general were so beautiful. We booked 5 activities through the hotel, and they were all amazing. The staff took care of this before we even arrived, and when we wanted to add an additional activity, they helped us to book the one that would be perfect for our group.
We rode horses up to the observation point, and it was clear that the horses were well taken care of. Our guide Danny was both funny and informative, and he was passionate about taking care of the horses and all the other wildlife.
We got massages, and the spa was incredibly peaceful. We left feeling very relaxed, and it was a great experience!
Our room was beautiful, and we were treated to a cheese platter and sangria upon arrival. The shower was amazing and our patio was lovely!
We ate at the restaurant many times, and the food was very good, although there are also many great options outside of the resort. We would recommend the buffet over the a la carte, as it was cheaper and the food quality was very good. There were many options for breakfast, and it was very tasty.
I wish there had been wifi in our room instead of just in common spaces, but this did not end up being too big of a problem.

If you stay anywhere in Costa Rica, you MUST say at the Springs Resort and Spa. I would match the accommodations and facilities and Service up against ANY hotel in the world. The views are inconceivably great, the grounds are immaculate as are the rooms. Such luxury and yet you feel as if you are in the jungle. Birds, Monkeys and it is so peaceful.
The food is amazing at the restaurants and bars. The pools and hot springs are everywhere and each is better and more private than the last. The attention to detail is second to none. Best of all, the PEOPLE. From the front desk, to the wait staff, to housekeeping, they are SO SO friendly and competent and efficient. simply the best.
The Springs, which was a rainforest paradise with excellent amenities and an exceptionally friendly staff. Not all properties appeal to all people, but this place was right up our alley.
Our accommodations were beautiful and, of course, overlooked Arenal Volcano. The staff added a twin bed for our niece, and we still had plenty of room to move around and store our belongings. Our balcony–with four chairs, a table, and two hammocks–was huge. The bathroom was enormous–with two sinks, an oversized stall shower, and a whirlpool tub–and we appreciated that the toilet area had its own door.
There was also a wet-bar in our room, which meant we had an extra sink for filling water bottles, etc. The room was cleaned to perfection, with the housekeepers entertaining us with their towel creations in the form of monkeys, sloths, and elephants.
The grounds of The Springs are lush and beautiful. Other than the springs and pool outside the main building, we rarely shared the other springs with anyone. We had tons of privacy and quiet, which we totally enjoyed. We took a scenic walk down the hill to Club Rio (there are shuttles that run every 30 minutes), where we again lounged in hot springs all by ourselves.
We swam in the refreshingly cool river, toured the animal sanctuary with the very knowledgeable Victor (who also was host of an early morning bird walk that my husband really enjoyed), and took a night walk with the nature-loving Jonathan.
There is no dining package at The Springs, but food was available at various venues throughout the day. The breakfast buffet was extensive, and a big breakfast was more than enough to hold me until dinner. Our servers and bartenders–in particular Francisco, Romeo, Maikol, and Jose Daniel–waited on us hand and foot and by the end of our stay felt more like friends than hotel employees.
In addition to the animal sanctuary tour, bird walk, and night hike, we also booked a float trip that ended with a delicious snack at a charming farm (thanks Fabricio and Rodrigo). We also visited Mistico Hanging Bridges, the Tabacon River, and La Fortuna Waterfall with our wonderful tour guide Denis of Fortuna Services. Although we saw all sorts of birds, animals, insects, and plants throughout our travels, one of our best views of a sloth was in a tree right near the main building of The Springs!
As I said, this is not a place for everyone. Guests must do some walking up and down hills and stairs, unless they get the assistance of a golf cart. There isn’t a party vibe: no loud entertainment and the bars and restaurants close about 10 p.m. But if you are looking for a stunning setting with flora, fauna, and friendly people, definitely book The Springs.

La Fortuna Suites is in a great location, one block away from the main street and a
10-15 minutes drive to Arenal National Park. Our room was on the ground level and was spacious, clean and comfortable.
We stayed four nights at La Fortuna Suites. Ian was easy an helpful in advance of our trip and we valued having the extra intel about the area. The downstairs suite was a bit smaller than we expected but bed was comfortable and linen good and changed regularly. Everything was very clean.
Apart from fridge and coffee maker kitchen is very basically equipped with no way of cooking (though there are restaurants locally) . There were welcome extras like coffee and tea provided, even ice cubes. Bathroom was on the small size. We enjoyed the shared upstairs balcony in the evenings and got to know other guests.
Breakfast was at a local restaurant nearby – although large, quality was variable and for a non-egg eater choices very limited: fruit consisted of one slice of watermelon! Suggest skipping breakfast in the booking and sorting your own.
This was a fantastic place to stay for us in La Fortuna! Ian and Amanda were so helpful, so nice, so very accommodating! The room was great, it was clean and extremely comfortable! The location is quiet, enough off of the beaten path for a good sound sleep, but then so close to the center of town that we could walk pretty much anywhere we wished. Breakfast was provided by vouchers for the Lava Lounge, which is a great place to eat any meal as well as have drinks with a friendly staff.
It’s located on a quiet street with great views of the volcano, but right in the centre of the action in La Fortuna. There’s an abundance of fantastic restaurants, shops, banks and a lovely park within 5 minutes walk. There’s also the great Luna Lounge with live music on a Wednesday and Saturday night.
The beds were so comfy with really lovely cotton bedlinen. Lastly, the breakfasts were delicious with a different delicacy each morning. And great Costa Rican Coffee.
The location is central without being noisy, about two blocks from the main street running through town. Our room was spacious, clean, and well-appointed, with a nice little living/kitchen area and a big-screen TV. The bed was VERY comfy–Costa Rica seems to favour quite firm beds, and this one had a cushy pillow top which made me very happy.
The thing that really sets this place apart is its friendly host! Ian was so helpful, greeting us with fruit smoothies, and offering to personally escort us or drive us to various points of interest and to make arrangements for us. Breakfast was delicious and plentiful, and you get to eat it on a nice little balcony with a view (clouds permitting) of the volcano! There’s a small, easy trail right at the end of the street where you can see poison dart frogs and iguanas and lots of pretty birds.
Ian is a world-class host and the property is beautiful, with an amazing view of the volcano! Upon arrival, Ian helped us feel at home, and the spaciousness of the room made it feel like an actual home, rather than a usual hotel room. The bedroom, living area, and bathroom were all of high quality, which helped us feel comfortable during the stay. Each morning, Ian had a delicious and filling breakfast prepared for us, which was a great way to start the day! The breakfast area is also a great opportunity to meet other travelers and socialize with Ian, who will tell you stories about the area, the plants and wildlife in Costa Rica, and help you plan your vacation.
Overall, this was one of the best stays I’ve had while on vacation, and I highly recommend La Fortuna Suites to any traveler looking for a comfortable place to stay that is located within a short walking distance from town, and with a host who will go above and beyond to ensure that you have a great vacation.
