Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender (LGBT) rights in Belgium are seen as some of the most progressive in Europe and in the world. Same-sex sexual activity was legalised in 1795, with an equal age of consent, except from 1965 until 1985. After granting same-sex couples domestic partnership benefits in 2000, Belgium became the second country in the world to legalise same-sex marriage in 2003. Same-sex adoption was fully legalised in 2006 under the same terms and conditions as heterosexual adoption, and lesbian couples can access IVF as well.
Ghent is a port city in northwest Belgium, at the confluence of the Leie and Scheldt rivers. During the Middle Ages it was a prominent city-state. Today it’s a university town and cultural hub. Its pedestrianized center is known for medieval architecture such as 12th-century Gravensteen castle and the Graslei, a row of guildhalls beside the Leie river harbor.

Hotel is in good location, only 15 min walk from all the centre on Ghent(easy/straight walk from hotel).Staff very helpful and polite and friendly. Hotel very quaint and charming. No lifts in hotel however staff offer to help you with your bags to your room if required.
Breakfast was manly continental, but did have options of boiled or scrambled eggs, which there was plenty of. All food was fresh and replenished regularly.
Plenty to do in Ghent, loads of bars and restaurants, and great buildings and boat trips.Great place to chill and people watch.
Lovely old building which has retained many of the original features including the furnishings and creaky floorboards. Good place to explore Ghent, 20 mins by tram from the railway station and a short 5/10 min walk into the town centre. We had a huge room with a nice comfortable bed. Bathroom a bit quirky and old fashioned with a reasonable shower.
I loved the place but my wife was not so keen as she prefers a more modern hotel. Staff all very friendly and efficient with easy check in/out. Breakfast is provided continental style with plenty to choose from. The only hot options are scrambled or boiled eggs. The only downside for us was that the hotel had no bar. Would I stay here again? Yes.
Our room was old fashioned and access up very steep stairs, but it was a nice location once we arrived. Some noise was transmitted from neighbouring rooms and an additional light would have been handy, but we liked the ambience.
The wi-fi was excellent throughout the public areas and our room. Breakfast was a very varied buffet. We came down fairly late and the scrambled egg was rather congealed, but otherwise high quality food.
The location is just 5 minutes from central Ghent, and although a 30 minute walk from the railway station (which is on the edge of town) there are trams, and the walk through the parks was very pleasant. Ghent is a lovely town. We could have stayed longer.
From the street you get very little impression of what really lies behind the doors. The hotel is in a wonderful old building with an interesting background, it has been sympathetically and gently converted to its current role and is clearly well looked after. I love how you see the difference between the parts of the house which would have been used originally by the family and those parts which would have been left to the servants in the house.
The staircase narrows and the building materials change as you leave the grander lower floors and make your way up through the hotel. Our room was on the top floor which yes, is a bit of a climb but it was worth it. The room was spacious and comfortable, the bathroom was big with a good shower and from the sloping windows we could see out across the roofs of Ghent. A lovely sight in the early morning was a hot air balloon floating across the city!
Breakfast was truly delicious with a very good selection of bread, cakes, cheese, cereal, fruit and more besides!
The hotel is an easy 15 min walk to the center of the city and there are many bars and restaurants to enjoy.
We had a great stay and really enjoyed our brief visit, we hope to be back, to enjoy more of the lovely city and the hospitality of this charming hotel.

There are various tram connections to the old city centre and the business zones, and there is also a direct tram connection to Flanders Expo. 3 star Carlton Hotel is located directly next to the ICC International Convention Centre.
Hotel Carlton is a short walk from the train station. So it’s a longer walk to the old city center and other parts of Ghent. Very small hotel but helpful staff. Made to order breakfast. Located in a residential area, which we liked. Our room faced the street so there was some street noise but that was offset for us by the big windows and feeling that you were in a neighborhood. We would return and stay there again.
This small renovated hotel is owned by brothers who want your stay to be wonderful. A very very short walk from the train station makes this an easy stop and one also can easily catch the bus to the old city center of Ghent which is a LONG walk despite what some might tell you.
The breakfasts include all wonderful things from a European buffet and a menu from which you may order Rosti and other delights made to your liking.
The back rooms are quiet and lovely with large windows and the modern furnishings were appreciated.
I would stay here again for sure.
There is a Coffee machine in lobby which made awesome coffee and Tv in the room with English channels which was a nice surprise. Front desk gentleman was super friendly and helpful and told us how the tram worked and which restaurants to go to. Room for the most part was quiet although we did hear people above us walking around early morning – better to ask for a room on top floor. Nothing to complain about all in all. Would definitely stay here again.
I often visit the stunning beautiful Ghent where I’ve tried five different hotels. Some of them had the great comfort and location like Carlton but any of them had the friendly, caring and individual atmosphere and the great hospitality that Carlton has. Nothing is too much for the two wonderful brothers (thank you!) who run the hotel. Don’t think Carlton is too far from the city center: with tram you’re there in few minutes and the area around Carlton is lovely too! A perfect hotel to upgrade your perfect stay in Ghent.
This particular hotel is locally owned and the the owners are extremely knowledgeable and helpful and friendly and accommodating and professional. It is located about a mile or so from the historic city center, but it is a pleasant walk (we like to walk) and it is also less than a block from a tram stop that is very convenient if you prefer not to walk. The rooms were very comfortable and clean. The price was also more affordable than the hotels located in the city center.
How much does a room costs at Hotel Carlton ?
Prices start 97$/night for Standard Double Room. The Classic Double Room is 104$/room per night with breakfast included – if coming on a honeymoon this is the perfect choice for gay couples.
This double room features a minibar, seating area and electric kettle.

3. NH Gent Belfort 4* – Gay Friendly Hotels Ghent
The NH Gent Belfort is
next to Ghent’s historic hall building. It features stylish accommodation, a fine dining restaurant and an on-site gym and sauna. Free WiFi is available. All rooms at NH Gent Belfort feature design furniture and flat-screen TVs. They have a
that comes with free soap and shampoo products. The on-site restaurant Van Artevelde serves traditional local cuisine in a warm atmosphere. The bar is a
place to meet for a traditional Belgian beer and delicious cocktails. When weather permits, the hotel’s outside terrace is a
place to enjoy the sun. The garden lounge bar is also an attractive environment for unwinding after a long day.The NH Gent is right in the heart of the tourist district in Ghent – all of the sights I wanted to see were in walking distance and it is, quite frankly, a beautiful area for walking, cafes, people watching. Many nice restaurants and cafes close by. The location is just perfect.
Also, there are shops near by (e.g. if you need to go to a pharmacie or pick up something for your trip). Leave the hotel and turn left onto the main road. Walk down towards the bridge but turn left before then and you’ll find lots of intl brand shops as well as local boutiques, boulangeries, chocolatiers etc.
The room was clean, quiet and spacious with nice linens and a nicely laid out bathroom. I was surprised by the size of the room given the location of the hotel – in the old part of town – but there is a modern section to the building. Water pressure in the shower was a bit iffy, the temperature would cycle up and down rather than remaining constant, but the hotel is in an old part of town so I expect issues like that.
I used the laundry service which was excellent.
The elevators were quick and quiet.
The WiFi was good – good everywhere in the hotel. I made WiFi calls in the bar as well as making calls in my room.
I cannot comment on breakfast having eaten at a local boulangerie every day.
The multilingual staff were very friendly and helpful, I was able to check in early and they organised my taxi to the train station etc.
I would stay here again when visiting Ghent.
This hotel was better than I expected. I upgraded to a better room and the room was clean, the bathroom was modern with both a bath and a shower cubicle. It was very quiet and great wifi which always helps.
The best thing is the location, you are right in the heart of the old town. I opted not to take the breakfast and it is a short minutes walk to the market square and from there the main attractions. And if you get tired of walking, Gent city hall now offers free hop on hop off services.
Excellent location in the center of the city right off Int-Baafsplein. The common areas are clean and modern and very recently renovated. Front desk staff were excellent and helpful. We very much enjoyed the breakfast buffet on Sunday morning. Lots of options and very fresh. Our room had an excellent view of Saint Bavo cathedral and was quite spacious.
Hotel rooms were very spacious and clean. We stayed in the renovated section so new decor and no carpets were much appreciated. Location was very central and within walking distance of all major attractions and restaurants neither of which are lacking. Staff were very helpful and had many suggestions if asked. Lobby bar was very welcoming and friendly. Would recommend this hotel.
his hotel in the historical centre from Ghent is superbly situated. A lot of tourist attractions are within a few minutes’ walk. Also, it only takes a half hour walk from the railway station to the hotel. If that’s to much, you can still take a tram which has a stop (Korenmarkt) at a minute walk from the hotel. For good restaurants you don’t have to walk very far either. The personnel were very friendly and helpful indeed.
The room was spacious and correctly equipped (including the equipment in the bathroom). In my opinion there are two attention points:
– the bed was far too stiff and not up to the quality you would expect from a four-star hotel
– inside the room there was quite some noise: the air-conditioning (even on the lowest level), the refrigerator, and the noise from people passing in front of the room’s entrance.
On the other hand, there was no noise from outside, although the ‘Gentse feesten’ started that evening.
Then, the breakfast was delicious and there was a very wide choice.

This 55 square metres modern room features either a queen bed or two single beds. The room benefits from a spacious layout, carpeted floors and a bathroom with a separate bathtub, shower and bathrobe per person. Some rooms feature a dressing room.
A minibar is available, as well as coffee and tea making facilities, a bottle of water, a professional hairdryer and extra amenities. The room furthermore features a large flat-screen TV, free WiFi and a safe.
