Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) rights in the United States have evolved in recent decades. However, LGBT Americans may still face some legal and many social challenges not experienced by non-LGBT residents, particularly in states with large conservative populations, such as in the Deep South; in rural areas; and in some Native American tribal nations.
U.S. federal law does not explicitly include protections against discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity. In June 2020, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that sexual orientation and gender identity are included under “sex” as a prohibited ground of employment discrimination in the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

We have been to Key West many times but decided to give this place a try. Prior reviews don’t really take into consideration that it is a gay, clothing optional place. You don’t have to be nude, it is just optional and most guests are not. It is focused on time at the pool and the night life. They warn you there is some noise but not as bad as I thought it would be. We stayed in Room 25. It was clean but a little tired. We stayed two nights and had no problem even taking a nap in the afternoon. The staff is always very friendly and we enjoyed our stay.
It would be nice if they had darker curtains on the room to help block the sun and the a/c kept it nice but not really cold cold. We will be back as we had a nice time.
The heart of the gay triangle. Location is everything. It is all about the location and the club for me. The rooms are just okay. The clothing optional, pool, bar, nightclub and entertainment keep me coming back. You never have to leave the property except to eat, everything else is right there for you. This is my 4th stay and I will be back.
This was our first time visiting Key West. We had stayed at another hotel just up the street and wanted to extend our stay, but they were booked. We stumbled on this location through Booking and were pleasantly surprised to find that we had booked a gay resort.
They were very accommodating and were able to get us in two hours before check-in so we could go enjoy the beach without leaving our valuables in the car. After checking in we were given a complete walk through of the resort which was a nice touch of customer service.
Ken at the front desk booking was very welcoming and helpful in arranging a few day trips in Key West.
The room was basic enough, but just fine for the price we had booked it at. We were surprised to learn that there is a complementary happy hour at the bar out back; our margaritas were great! We also received free passes to the drag shows on Duval. Although we didn’t use them on this trip, its great to know that we have that option when we return for our next vacation. The breakfast in the morning was continental, but there was a wide selection. We loved the huge porch overlooking Duval Street as well.

Everyone’s genuinely smiling, friendly, and accommodating, and it’s the most welcoming place I’ve ever been to. The bone-white property is spotless, with great foliage and furnishings. Our room (#6) was small with a very nice bed, but otherwise not memorable. (That wasn’t a big deal — we didn’t come all the way to Key West to watch TV.) The other guests were couples between 35 and 65, a mix of gay, lesbian, and straight. It’s definitely not a wild party place (you can hear the Island House across the street), but rather a quiet respite for People Like Us. Very relaxing.
A great small quiet guesthouse with large nicely furnished rooms, beautiful grounds, plentiful delicious breakfast, and a well stocked free happy hour bar. A friendly and helpful staff with many repeat guests, making it feel like a school reunion. The many repeat guests speak for itself, and in the future we will definitely book the Alexander Gay & Lesbian Guesthouse again.
This was our fourth year staying at Alexander’s. Don’t let the name of the guesthouse fool you. This is a gay and lesbian guesthouse but friends of the community are welcome also. We are a straight couple and have never been made to feel anything but extremely welcome and part of the Alexander’s family. Alexander’s is located as far away from noisy Duval Street as possible while still being in Old Town but within walking distance of everything.
The breakfast is wonderful and we look forward to the different selections they have every morning. The property is super clean. Our room is cleaned every day and made to look as if it is our first night checking in every night. The staff in incredible! They are all so personable and willing to go out of their way to make sure you have a great stay.
Beautiful boutique hotel; welcoming and friendly staff; social guests enjoying their time in a tranquil and relaxing environment. Property is proximite to Duval Street; the more party-focused gay hotel Island House is across the street. Highly recommend this hotel who want their home base to be warm, clean, friendly and relaxing, yet be near to all of the raucous fun in Key West.
The room itself was gorgeous, spotless, and charming. The area is full of fun things to do and places to see, all within walking distance. With us being gay and me being trans I’m always hesitant to stay at places that are too “intimate”, as it is potentially more dangerous for us. Therefore I was a bit nervous at the prospect of staying here. But everyone was wonderfully kind, and we had a fantastic time in this cozy-yet-chic guesthouse. Go stay here! We had a blast, and we’ll definitely be back again.
My partner and I have traveled extensively staying at Gay accommodations. Alexander’s is one of the best properties we have experienced. We particularly like the the policy of all inclusion of your LGBT brothers and sisters. The more people to meet and share the better! You can still get naked, if u must, in designated areas. Nice.
Everything was extremely well done and appointments to detail a priority. It was expensive, but that’s the cost of staying in paradise.

Free continental breakfast is provided. There’s also a trendy restaurant serving local fare. Entertainment options include a piano bar, and on-site cabaret. There’s also an outdoor pool and a rooftop sundeck.
Found this place by accident while searching for a place to stay while on vacation. What a pleasant surprise. We loved it. I can best describe La te da as a cross between a bed and breakfast and a micro resort. Comfortable, warm and welcoming with a very interactive and caring staff on a small property that has everything. 20 or so private rooms that are clean and comfortable, not massive or over-sized but plenty large enough to not feel cramped. A small but usable pool to break the heat surrounded by lush local and tropical plants.
Great restaurant with very good food, not inexpensive but certainly not as high as many of the quality restaurants in old town. A very inviting outdoor bar and patio and an inside piano bar with live entertainment on a regular basis. Located on the quiet end of Duval Street, you are away from the chaos but only a few minutes walk to all of the excitement of Old Town. Great location, excellent staff, totally relaxing and enjoyable. Really nothing but good things to say. Final note for the closed minded, this hotel like many of the non-corporate businesses in Key West is run by gay men. This is an adults only hotel/resort.
Very nice outdoor bar with wonderful bartendresses and signature drinks. Caters a bit to the Gay and transvestite crowd, but all are welcome!! Very close to the Butterfly Garden and Southernmost Point. So a very good place to take a bit of a sightseeing break.
All the staff, from the person checking us in, to the waiters at the restaurant, were very friendly and helpful! The hotel had a laid–back atmosphere but did an excellent job keeping everything in tip-top shape. Our room was colorful and fun, AC worked beautifully, and shower water pressure was top-notch.
Complimentary breakfast included your choice of three items from the restaurant menu and all were amazing. I ate the sausage gravy and biscuit and my boyfriend had the pancakes–we were both thrilled. The location on Duval St. made it perfect for exploring the city. We would definitely stay here again in Key West.
Our room was on the ground floor, literally 2 steps from pool, 8 steps from dining room, 15 steps from bar. That’s convenient, but it also means you can hear the music from the bar when it comes on at 8am (although laidback and not too loud) and for the 8:30-10:30 pm show (louder, but that’s could be a plus, since you can listen in the comfort of your room, use your own alcohol and not have to pay for drinks). That show is free.
Drag show is upstairs and cost $32 plus 2 drink minimum. I didn’t like that when you got there, they give you a drink list with NO prices. Even after you ask, they just tell you it’s between $13 and $20 each, so basically the show is $72. But they do put a lot of alcohol in the drinks and I had fun getting drunk, which I almost never do (get drunk).
Recently,I spent a week’s visit at La Te Da, and I can safely say that this was by far the most amazing hotel that I have ever stayed at in all of my travels around the world. The staff was so fabulously friendly, caring and dedicated to what they are doing for the people that are staying there.
Live music each night inside the main building, that played out the windows that were open to their outdoor bar/restaurant that was so lovely, as it was located on one side to the street, and the other the edge of the pool. Most nights there is a live action drag cabaret happening upstairs with live singing Queens that put on a show like no other.
The owners are very nice and lovely people, and very thankful to have met them. I am already looking forward to returning. This hotel offers everything one is going to need… not to mention the food is mouthwatering. The hotel is located on the less tourist side of Duval street which made it so much less overwhelming when there are cruise ships in town, but the hotel is located central enough that one is able to access everything that Key West has to offer.
A short walk to the more touristy side of town and easy access to everything. I can safely state that this is the best hotel to stay at if you are going to be visiting Key West.

Stayed for 5 nights and chose this hotel for the location – Right at the end of Duval Street and connected to Sunset Pier – Perfect spot to walk to Mallory Square (right next door) and the fun section of Duval Street. We went to the pool everyday and loved it – Excellent service with beautiful unobstructed views of the water. Never had a problem getting a chair and umbrella – keep in mind that most of the pool deck is full sun all day.
This is a wonderful hotel. The beds are so comfortable, the rooms are so clean, there’s plenty of closet space to hang your clothes. And, the location cannot be beat. It’s next to Mallory Square and in the heart of Key West activities. You can easily walk to the Truman Little White House and other attractions. We used room service for breakfast and the food was wonderful. The staff could not have been friendlier or more accommodating.
Ocean Ley is a truly great resort. Located next door to Mallory Square at 0 Duval St. Poolside service is outstanding. Staff is fast friendly and professional. Rooms are large, clean and comfortable. Stay here to be very close to the action but once on the property it is quiet and relaxing.
We had a great partial ocean view room- Mallory, 5th floor- absolutely amazing view overlooking part of Mallory Square = and totally aligned with the setting sun! Room was beautiful – faux columns and beams divided a large room visually, add it the wood planks on the high sloped ceiling, bright and airy decor and large bathroom with walk in shower and separate jacuzzi tub and this place is a real winner! Any issues we had were quickly resolved.
Loved Hot Tin Roof for a light breakfast with a gorgeous view of the ocean and the gulf and the pool. Valet/bellhop Alex perfectly suited for assisting guests and Ali at the front desk was very welcoming. Sunset pier for, wait, the sunset…excellent service from Erica and the drinks and food there were well poured and yummy.
So well situated – rent bikes if you need but easy to walk most everywhere. Can walk to the Marina, Truman house, Duval street and a short bike ride to the other side of the island to visit restaurants or hotels there.
Ocean Key Resort & Spa exceeded our expectations. Each department team member made your experience one of great pleasure. Check-in & check-out was a breeze. The room amenities were fabulous. Our room had an amazing view of the Gulf of Mexico & Mallory Square. The pool & jacuzzi were great to kick back & enjoy. The location of the hotel can not be beat. Dinner at the Hot Tin Roof was fabulous. Service, food & atmosphere were top notch. I would certainly return next time we take a trip back to Key West.

I’m a frequent KW visitor, having rented homes there, stayed in other hotels, and a couple of the optional gay resorts over the last few years. I first went to The Gardens Hotel a couple of years ago with a friend for happy hour to enjoy the brilliant self-serve wine set up.
The Hotel is pristine. The grounds are impeccable, and the staff is great. The location was directly in the middle of the town. In walking distance of everything. It is also located off of the main strip. Which is very nice because the bars in Key West close at 4am It was so quiet you would have never known that it was a half a block away.
There are many hotels that cater to gay and lesbian people in Key West. My girlfriend and I were concerned that if we stayed at a place not geared toward gays and lesbians it would take away from our trip. This was certainly not the case. We were made to feel at home by everyone.
The cottages pool is quite small, but the main pool is open to all rooms & cottages, so this is not an issue. Breakfast is delicious, amenities are clean & well functioning. The only little negative point I would mention is the bed mattress that was too soft for us, but that didn’t prevent a wonderful stay. Location is very convenient, very close to Duval Street. If you want a nice & quiet place to stay, I would definitely recommend the place.
It is all about the service at the Gardens. Beautiful grounds that are continually being groomed to give it a feel of years getting be by. With Nat King Cole music and other icons of the 50’s and 60’s being played, you have a feel of a more quiet and pampered age. Rooms have private bath and all emminities. Wonderful fresh breakfast is included. One of the most relaxing places I have ever stayed. The location is the perfect one with one street over from Duval so you can come back to room easily to escape the afternoon heat. I would stay there again in a heartbeat.
