Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) rights in the United States have evolved in recent decades. However, LGBT Americans may still face some legal and many social challenges not experienced by non-LGBT residents, particularly in states with large conservative populations, such as in the Deep South; in rural areas; and in some Native American tribal nations.
U.S. federal law does not explicitly include protections against discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity. In June 2020, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that sexual orientation and gender identity are included under “sex” as a prohibited ground of employment discrimination in the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

Stayed here celebrate my husband’s birthday is in the heart if South Beach.
What a wonderful boutique hotel with service that is impeccable. They have a great sauna and bikes available.
Wish bikes were available till 730 with sun down though. The rooms are uniquely decorated and ours was great!
The sauna is a good addition. The breakfast was high quality and fresh with a great selection – you can make your own pancakes.
This hotel is in a fantastic location right at the end of Lincoln Road with bars, restaurants and shopping right on the doorstep.
The beach is only a 15 minute walk away. The hotel caters specifically to the gay market and caters to this market very well.
Very easy to check in, we had a deluxe room on the second floor away from the bar – important to ask for a room away from the bar if you want to avoid some of the bar noise.
Very spacious and well equipped room – couldn’t ask for more.
The hotel does have weekly event nights and the bar is open to the public and gets very busy – it is an integral part of the Miami Beach scene.
I booked this hotel because it was a gay hotel and i was traveling alone. I thought it would a good place to meet people. That said it was.
I met so many wonderful people during my stay that i was never really alone. The crowd the bar draws in is a combination or locals and guests.
Fun themed nights. Rupaul night , bbq on Sunday afternoon.
The staff here is wonderful. Very friendly and helpful. I was lucky to get a backroom that was very quiet even during events.
The lobby doubles as a gay bar that gets busy some nights after 5. While it can get noisy for the nearby rooms, the hotel staff does its best to minimize the noise and the bar closes at a reasonable hour most nights.
Overall a pleasant experience with a good gay vibe.
The thing that really makes Hotel Gaythering a step apart is the social aspect. The staff (or ‘crew’) are all friendly and genuinely want to make your stay as good as possible.
On top of that the hotel is dedicated to facilitating socialisation.
From free excursions, to the nightly entertainment that is popular with both travellers and locals, it’s impossible to stay at Gaythering without making at least one new friend.
Breakfast is plentiful and good, and the bar is well stocked with beer and cocktails with different offers every night.
As the name would suggest – this is a men only hotel. If it were a meme it would come with the NSFW tag.
If this makes you uncomfortable then it’s probably not the hotel for you. But if you’re ok with a little sauciness then what are you waiting for – get booking!!
Why You Should NOT Book Hotel Gaythering – Gay Hotel
Somewhere between a hotel and a bathhouse.
This place is depressing, especially if you knew the gay scene of South Beach’s yesteryear.
When did the gays lose their edge? Gaythering ??? Really?? They couldn’t think of a more original or sophisticated name? The name alone is so incredibly tacky and reason enough to never step foot in this place. I did however, and although I had a decent time socializing with friends, it was really the company I was keeping and not this establishment.
It’s very reminiscent of hotel on Fire Island where low tea takes place. It’s just not great

Your loftiest dreams become a reality when you step foot in the art deco-inspired haven that is Dream South Beach.
Located on Collins Avenue, our hotel is surrounded by stylish boutiques, the hottest clubs and is just 50 yards from pristine white sand beaches.
Right next door is another fashionable address, once known as the famed Versace Mansion. Close proximity to Ocean Drive, Lincoln Road and Espanola Way.
Art Deco style meets French Moroccan chic, at Dream South Beach, which boasts 107 guestrooms and suites designed by Michael Czysz with modern amenities such as large flat screen TVs, high-speed Wi-Fi for a fee, fully-stocked mini bars, C.O Bigelow bath amenities and much more.
While here, be immersed in late 70’s poolside glamour at our rooftop pool and lounge, indulge in Mexican fare at Celebrity Chef Ralph Pagano’s Naked Taco restaurant, slip into ecstasy with a relaxing spa treatment, and enjoy an atmosphere that is both cosmopolitan and comfortable.
We really enjoyed the Dream Hotel. It was a great location and an incredible value!!! It’s great for gay travelers because it’s very close to the 12TH Street beach and gay bars/clubs.
The staff were all very friendly and helpful, and the room was stylish and comfortable.
The only downsides are that the walls are not soundproofed, the valet parking is very expensive, and the room lighting is very dim.
The sun suite was large and unique and worth the price when you compare to other suites across south beach.
As others have mentioned, the bathroom is a fishbowl, so keep in mind, but with a huge rooftop terrace as part of the room it was easy to get a bit of privacy.
The bed was quite comfortable, plenty of space in the room, shower was big and refreshing. I thought the chocolate, water and ice was a nice touch in the evening (the only parts of turndown I care about).
Lighting is dim for sure, and some of the furniture was a bit beat up, but nothing too crazy.
The free beach chairs were a great perk, the staff at the beaches were super helpful and friendly, and Miami is all about the beach during the day. They even let you transfer one beach over to the gay beach on 12th, if that interests you.
I thought the pool deck was great. Perfect for a couple hrs in the late afternoon.
Very special and nice hotel in the art deco district of Miami. Modern, big room with two comfortable double beds. Very advanced lightning.
Nice rooftop pool with bar, and restaurant with award winning chef. Very nice staff, no problem with late check out. The hotel is very close to South beach and also includes two sunbeds on the beach.
Lots of restaurant around the hotel, and shopping. Next time, we will stay longer. Must also say that this hotel is gay-friendly.
This hotel is the highlight of stylish accommodation I experienced across America. Rooms look exactly as they are photographed and the lighting is very seductive!!
Sometimes the lighting is annoying when you want bright light but very minor and not worth changing your mind & choosing a different hotel.
Why You Should NOT Book Dream South Beach
The hotel itself was ok. Location was good, was clean, staff was nice. However due to covid they were not cleaning rooms while you were there, not good when you go to the beach some days!! They didn’t give you any extra towels if you were staying longer since they weren’t cleaning, you had to ask for them every time and then they didn’t take dirty ones so we had a mountain of dirty towels in our room.
Our “city view” was of the alley laundry trash cans. The rooftop pool was much smaller then I assumed by the picture (don’t plan on swimming).
And if you have a rental car it’s $45/night and plan to wait 45-60 minutes every time you need it to leave. Overall it was OK for the price we paid, but nothing to brag about.

At the hotel, the rooms come with a wardrobe, a TV and a private bathroom.
Video Review of AxelBeach Miami South Beach – Adults Only
A buffet breakfast is available each morning at AxelBeach Miami South Beach and served a ‘à la carte’.
The accommodation offers a terrace.
Why You Should Book AxelBeach Miami South Beach – Gay Hotel Miami South Beach
Our stay at the Axel was great. The rooms were comfortable and the accommodations were beyond our expectations.
One staff member, Adrian, really went above and beyond to help us with all our questions about Miami and provided suggestions for restaurants and bars to visit.
I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this hotel to any of my friends for their visit to Miami.
It’s very much part of the South Beach vibe and only one block from the beach. It’s got a pool and gym (only one person allowed to use at a time).
It’s very central to shops, restaurants and mini markets and drugstores. You can walk everywhere.
WIFI works great.
Axel is a gay run hotel chain but everyone is welcome. As they say everywhere they are hetero friendly. As a single woman I didn’t feel out of place there.
The staff are super friendly and efficient.
The hotel is a renovated art deco hotel with a chic modern look, been waking distance from ocean drive it offers variety of great restaurants.
Inside the hotel there is a great pool and jacuzzi.
The best part of the hotel is their staff, very friendly with great hospitality.
Otherwise, nice hotel, nice rooms, really amazing pool and jacuzzi. I recommend it to anyone visiting South Beach, especially for the gays, cause yes, it’s a gay hotel. It’s always nice to meet new handsome gay friends.
The location of the hotel was so convenient to shopping, dining, and the Beach for the one day we were able to enjoy it.
For anyone looking to have a wonderful experience in Miami Beach, look no further than AxelBeach Miami! I will definitely be returning.
The location is so convenient if you want to walk up The staff was extremely friendly and helpful. They even helped me open a bottle of wine when I didn’t have an opener.
There’s a super handsome, tall attendant from Cuba who helped me with my luggage. He was so strong, took my all my bags with one hand. I couldn’t stop staring at him. I’ll be coming back just for him!
Room was very clean and everybody went out of their way for us. I definitely recommend to all groups.
Pulling-up past the palm-tree lined entrance to the new AxelBeach Miami, a wave of nostalgia washes over.
This is classic South Beach, only reimagined for an all-inclusive future. Not all-inclusive as in all-you-can-eat buffet lines, more like welcoming to all. Most notably, the LGBTIQ+ guests Axel Hotels caters to.
Situated along Collins Avenue, just one block from the beach, the hotel is a remarkably comfortable crash-pad to soak up the spirit of South Beach. Here, in the heart of the famous Art-Deco District, guests will enjoy easy access to just about everything.
Inside the thoughtfully refurbished landmark, the cheerful staff gave a warm-welcome and were exceptionally hospitable throughout my 5-night stay.
The newly refreshed rooms offer a relaxed, bohemian vibe reminiscent of the hotel’s history dating back to the 1940s.
Featuring a soothingly spare design, appropriately centred around a comfortable bed clad in crisp, clean, white sheets, the hotel’s 160 guestrooms offer plenty of space to unpack and make yourself at home.
It’s outside, of course, where Miami shines and the AxelBeach Miami is no different.
The Instagram-worthy pool, one of the largest in South Beach, is framed by tall trees and masses of greenery. It’s a tropical oasis surrounded by orange, s-shaped chaises that make for comfortable pool hangs backed by a stellar soundtrack and attentive service.
OUTfair, a cheery shop situated in the lobby selling cheeky swimwear and other beach essentials, along with 2 on-site restaurants serving an eclectic mix of food and cocktails, ensure guests never go without.
But with so much at your door, getting out and exploring is a big part of the hotel’s appeal.
The requisite resort fee conveniently covers your beach-base during your stay. Guests enjoy a dedicated area with loungers and umbrellas along the famed shore, a short, 3-minute stroll away.
All this + excellent value too.
Why You Should NOT Book AxelBeach Miami South Beach – Gay Hotel Miami South Beach
This hotel is definitely overpriced. The entire facility is old. The staff was confused and made our stay very complicated. Just to get some ice was a process.
Getting a wrist band for $50 was required just to get some ice. There was a line of at least 10 people who were ready to complain about something.
Customer service at this hotel was a disaster. Room with balcony was terrible, bathroom was dirty, floor never mopped and the shower curtain liner was gross. Everything was rusty and paint on the walls was peeling.
We only stayed one night because of all above and $300 per room per night was way too much. I requested to speak with the manager, and I am still waiting. Nobody got back to me to make our stay pleasant.

, The Betsy Hotel, offers direct beach access, along with a courtyard and rooftop pool with 360 degree views.Video Review of The Betsy Hotel, South Beach
Adorned with fresh orchids and original art, every room offers hardwood floors and marble bathrooms. A flat-screen TV and a minibar are included in all rooms at The Betsy Hotel, South Beach.
Betsy’s rooftop Ocean Deck serves cocktails and guests can enjoy the sun loungers, ocean views and sunrise yoga. A fitness centre with Peloton bikes is also available on site.
Private beach service offering chairs and umbrellas, an on-property library, and Carlton Room Lounge are also part of The Betsy.
Why You Should Book The Betsy Hotel, South Beach
LT Steak & Seafood at The Betsy, South Beach is a contemporary American steakhouse located in the hotel’s lobby. Guests can enjoy cocktails at the Lobby Bar. Coffee beverages are provided at the Carlton Room Café.
Overlooking a palm-dotted beach, this upscale boutique hotel on Ocean Drive occupies an elegant Georgian Revival building from the 1940s. It’s a 12-minute walk from the shopping and bars of Lincoln Road.
Rooms and suites with walnut floors and tropical touches offer 2- or 4-poster beds, minibars and Wi-Fi access, along with flat-screen TVs, iPod docks and in-room libraries with autographed books.
Amenities include a courtyard pool, a spa and a poetry library, as well as a rooftop deck with a garden.
There’s a high-end steakhouse and a sleek lobby bar, while an underground speakeasy space can be reserved for events. Yoga classes are offered.
A beachfront gem honored by Travel + Leisure as ‘World’s Best’, The Betsy anchors the quiet end of iconic Ocean Drive — and has one of the most exciting neighborhoods in America as its backyard.
Inside, you’ll discover everything you’d expect from a luxury boutique hotel – 130 rooms and suites with relaxed tropical interiors, a Courtyard and Rooftop Pool, Two Eateries, a Library, Beach Access, Sunrise Yoga on the Skyline Deck, and a Fitness Center with Peloton Bikes.
And some things you might not, like a beloved gathering place for arts and culture, a curated arts program ranging from poetry readings to nightly live jazz, a royal welcome for four-legged friends, and the individual attention of a family-owned hotel.
Pros. Location location location. You can walk to Beach in two minutes, Starbucks, gelato place, best Italian place in town, etc all within easy walking distance.
Nice professional courteous staff, elegant hotel, nice rooms, good quality linens, pillows, towels etc. I really liked the shampoo and conditioner too.
No little bottles but had built in dispenser. TVs were solid and had cool TV in mirror in bathroom. AC was ice cold and I tested it out setting it to 65.
It is obviously a chic cool hotel. I also really liked the roof top pool and deck, and library.
The Betsy is without a doubt the best hotel in South Miami Beach. Perfect access to restaurants and beach and a remarkable staff.
Charming and upscale hotel on South Beach with well appointed rooms and no absolutely no feel of the huge hotel/resorts elsewhere in the area – but a great location.
In the Betsy I found the rare mix of a great location, high end culinary offerings and the kind of hospitality one would want in a luxury, boutique hotel.
However what stands out to me more than anything else is the hotel’s apparent commitment to the arts.
On any given night guests can hear top,top musicians. Between that, the mixology of the bar staff and a heated rooftop pool, this hotel is a true gem in Miami.
Highly recommend this boutique hotel to the behemoths on Miami Beach.
Courteous staff, beautifully decorated, and with great hand picked art throughout, the Betsy is a gem in a world where everything else is owned by a massive holding corporation.
Rooms may be a little small for some people, but they make up for it in character. There are lots of alcoves, libraries, and other indoor or outdoor areas to spend time.
We love the location. Close to Lincoln road, right by the beach, and in the deco district.
Ocean Drive was closed to traffic while we were there so we didn’t have any issues with ambient noise. The outdoor dining is exceptional.
Why You Should NOT Book The Betsy Hotel, South Beach
The hotel is lovely and artistic. It is also a great location and has a “buzz” vibe. The problem is the service does not match the prices, so expect to be disappointed.
Restaurant is way overrated. Rooftop pool is awesome, if you can can even get a lounge chair and a towel. The layout is confusing with the 2 buildings. I would never go here again

Hotel Victor is the perfect choice for any South Beach Miami leisure escape.
Love it. Amazing location on South Beach, beautiful rooms and great service. Perfect location to explore buzzing South Beach and directly over the road from the gay beach.
This will always be our hotel of choice when in Miami. Lovely swimming pool area and bar / food service. Really spacious rooms and well appointed bathrooms. We love the cool contemporary decor here – gorgeous.
We absolutely loved Hotel Victor! The location was perfect with lots of things to do and great “people watching” around. It’s right across the street from the beach, and you have a great view of the strip and the beach from the beautiful pool and cabana area.
The staff was super friendly and professional. Lianet, at the front desk, was very pleasant and accommodating at check-in and check-out.
Our room was absolutely beautiful and clean. The fitness center was nice. We were disappointed we didn’t have time to check-out the spa or the Americana bar/restaurant in the lobby.
Location: fantastic spot that’s literally next to the beach. It’s walking distance to lots of (touristy) restaurants/bars, shops, Starbucks, and other hotels.
Rooms: great views, very clean, decent size, and a lovely style. Lots of charging outlets, free fast WiFi, nice shower and bath plus the body wash and shampoo smell amazing.
Beds are very comfortable. TV has cable but not a smart tv. Housekeeping does a really solid job cleaning the room each day.
Service and amenities: the staff here is extremely welcoming and knowledgeable.
Walking into the incredible smelling lobby, they always check if they can do anything for you.
There’s a super chill sun deck and pool, with a great staff that keeps it clean. They have fruits/water, towels, nice view of the beach, cabana.
The pool is medium sized and pretty warm all day.
For beach days, the front desk can provide you with beach chairs, towels, and water bottles.
The beach nearby is clean and very well maintained, pretty quiet and relaxing, lots of volleyball courts with good players.
You can also borrow a bike for free (1.5 hours) from the front desk. I recommend a ride along the beach path at night.
There’s a spa onsite too but it was too pricey for us to want to try out.
No breakfast in the morning but there’s complimentary coffee and tea in the lobby.
Why You Should NOT Book Hotel Victor South Beach – Gay Hotel Miami South Beach
The Hotel Victor is a nice trendy 5* boutique hotel, perfectly located on South Beach. The reception area, rooms and bathrooms are nicely done. The spa is fantastic. The staff is off the charts pleasant and helpful!
Now for the non-nice bits…
We were on the 7th floor room 708 & 709. There was a generator noise/pump noise /fan noise on the Hotel Victor roof opposite our room which became unbearably irritating later into the night.
This noise switched off from 2:30 am to 5:am only. We booked 6 nights but stayed for 3 nights only. Very disappointed.
I have recorded, with the windows closed, the room noise at 1am.
