There is a very small gay scene in Paramaribo, though currently no dedicated gay bars or clubs. LGBT travelers have nothing to worry about in Suriname and in the capital Paramaribo where the most of the foreigners chain hotels are gay friendly hotels Paramaribo.
Both male and female same-sex sexual activity are legal in Suriname. Since 2015, hate speech and discrimination in employment and the provision of goods and services on the basis of sexual orientation has been banned in the country. Same-sex marriage and civil unions are not recognised by law.
Paramaribo is the capital city of Suriname on the banks of the Suriname River. It’s known for ornate wooden Dutch colonial buildings in its center. On the banks of the river, the 17th-century Fort Zeelandia houses the Surinaams Museum, with exhibits on the region’s history. Nearby, the wood-and-stone Presidential Palace faces Independence Square and is backed by the Garden of Palms, a public park.

Clean comfortable room and nice view of the river and pool area from my balcony which was a comfortable size. Hot breakfast ample with a nice mix of American, Dutch, Chinese and Surinamese dishes. Poolside restaurant service tended to be on the slow side but that’s not unusual for Suriname, but was tasty enough to more than compensate for the wait. Location isn’t convenient if you don’t have a vehicle but there is a regular daily shuttle to the city centre.
The hotel is well located, a little out of the city centre, but a short walk away, and they have a free shuttle bus to drop you off there.
The room was very big with in-room safe, tv, tea & coffee etc.. Only missed a mini bar, although there was a fridge.
The bed was very comfy, and the bathroom was spacious and well appointed. Service was excellent throughout, especially in the restaurant and around the pool.
Food was very good. Ate at the fish market night which was excellent. Other meals eaten here were also of a good standard, if not a little pricier than options elsewhere.
Breakfast was a little pricey at $18 but there were plenty of options including an egg station offering eggs, pancakes, waffles etc.. There was also an excellent dimsum station.
The Courtyard Paramaribo has all the amenities you’ll need on a leisure trip, including free Wi-Fi, access to a computer and printer, room service, a pool and a fitness centre. Love dim sum? Then breakfast will be a treat as options are included with the buffet. The hotel is situated on the banks of the Suriname River, so views are available at a price.
There is a free shuttle into town, where you must tour the architectural treasures of the historic inner city. I recommend exploring the city on foot and if you’re accustomed to walking, the return trek to the hotel is certainly doable, once the light is good and you’re not loaded with bags.
The best thing about this hotel for me was the friendliness and helpfulness of the staff. It sounds like a cliche but this was genuinely the case – they really did everything they could to sort things out for me which was really refreshing.
The hotel is ok. The room was spacious, quiet and very clean with a good sprinkling of power points. The hotel shuttle service from/ to the airport as well as to the city centre is helpful for first time visitors.
The wifi has excellent coverage throughout the property.

Laundry services can be arranged upon request.Hotel Palacio is located in the heart of the historical city center of Paramaribo. The strikingly beautiful hotel has an architectural style which is characteristic for the colonial city. This hotel makes for a perfect base for exploring Suriname!
The location was perfect as well. Close to restaurants and landmarks and right in the middle of a UNESCO heritage historical district.
The room had a comfortable bed with good linen and pillows, a refrigerator, coffee maker and an air conditioner that cooled the room quickly. The cable tv had a good selection of channels and the shower had good pressure with lots of hot water. The room was spotlessly clean as well.
Breakfast buffet was great too! Scrambled eggs, sausages, and pancakes for the warm foods: meat, cheese, sliced vegetables (tomato, lettuce, cucumber) and fresh fruit, a variety of cereals, bread and rolls and fruit juice, coffee, tea and homemade cakes every morning. Very filling.
The Palacio hotel has a great location on the Heerenstraat, which leads directly into the MR.F.H.R. Lim A Post Straat towards the sea, the most attractive stretch of old Paramaribo UNESCO World Heritage. The building itself, although probably of a younger date, also fits well into this beautiful part of town.
Talking of the surroundings, all of interest is in walking distance, the main sights, all the best restaurants and the shopping area around Domineestraat. One can also feel safe here, even at night.
We had booked a Queen room, but then we saw that this room was rather small with the double bed pushed against a wall, which meant that one person would have had to climb over the other to get out. Thus we asked for another room and got a twin-bedded room of much bigger size. Anyway during our 4-nights-stay there the only other guests had been two Dutch ladies travelling together.
To go to the room one has to go up some stairs, since there is no elevator. To look out the windows of the room was not very exciting, since there was a tin roof of a neighboring house blocking almost all the view.
In the bathroom there was a washbasin with a liquid soap dispenser, but only cold water. In the shower there were two separate dispensers for shampoo and shower gel, but they looked and smelled the same, so I wondered if they really put two different items in there. The showerhead was out of shape and the water went in all direction, some of it onto the body to be washed.

I stayed at the Jacana resort for one night. The premises of the resort are among some of the most beautiful I have encountered. The pool is a piece of art and the grounds have large bamboo trees and it is all excellently maintained.
Breakfast:
The breakfast could do with some more choices, but the quality of the food itself was good. The staff was also very friendly.
Rooms:
The room are spacious, but the pillows are not comfortable. That is an area that needs improvement. Also the button to turn of the ceiling fan and light is hidden very well. Trying to find it at 1 AM is a major chore and I called the front desk then to ask them where the button is, but nobody picked up the phone…
Massages:
This is an area in which the resort shines! Karishma massaged us and it was one of the better massages I have ever had. Felt completely relaxed after the massage. Karishma is truly a professional!
Location: the resort is located a bit outside the center, but there are plenty of grocery stores and food options nearby within walking distance.
Parking: Parking is possible on the grounds of the hotel and there is a guard at all times which ensures that your car is safe.
So would I recommend staying here? Yes, but mainly for the premises, pool and the massage! The room is a little but underwhelming.
But overall I have to say that such an hotel is unique in Paramaribo and for that I have to applaud them.
