It flawlessly blends elegance and nature, taking the Caribbean lifestyle to an unprecedented new height.
Video Review of Banyan Tree Mayakoba
A breathtaking getaway for relaxation, rejuvenation, romance and world-class dining, it is also the region’s most sustainable five-star resort.
With its revitalized culinary concepts, Thai-inspired therapies at the Banyan Tree Spa, 14 event-venues and the Greg Norman signature 18- hole El Camaleon golf course, home to the PGA Tour Mayakoba Classic, the resort raises the bar for premium leisure options and event planning.
Perfect for private getaways, family trips and group events, the Banyan Tree Mayakoba offers 120 villas, ranging from romantic Bliss and Serenity Pool Villas to Family Residences and Ocean Front Villas.
All include outdoor areas with private pools and terraces. Find a true blend of Asian hospitality with the idyllic passion of Mexico and Five-Star resort services and facilities.
East meets West in every subtle detail, from the fragrance of flowers encircling your villa, to the softness of a kimono, fine linens and essential oils on your skin. Here, even world-weary guests discover the eloquence of tranquility.
There is a reason that almost every review of this property is five stars.
It is exceptional in every way. The Banyan Tree property is very large and shares the Mayakoba area with the Fairmont and Rosewood.
The property is comprised of all villas with private swimming pools.
Our villa overlooked that canal and had very large indoor and outdoor space.
There are essentially two villa neighborhoods, villas near the beach and villas near the pool and restaurants.
To go between areas, you can bike (bikes are provided) or call for a cart.
The beach itself is small and has suffered from some erosion but it is very clean and the service there like everywhere at Banyan Tree is exceptional.
There are two smaller pools overlooking the gulf.
We spent no time at the main pool but it looked lovely. The grounds are impeccably maintained and there is nature to be seen everywhere.
Out villa was visited daily by coati, iguanas and crocodiles (small).
The food was fantastic. It should be noted that it is very expensive. Dinner for four at the Thai restaurant with three drinks, two appetizers, four mains and one dessert came to around $300 US.
The quality of ingredients was always top notch. Service was fantastic with most employees learning our names within 48 hours and every need taken care of immediately.
Grounds: Amazing. The main building houses all the restaurants except the lunch place at the beach.
It is a very large and beautifully landscaped resort.
Most villas are far enough from beach (and pool) that they give you bikes.
My family enjoyed the bikes very much and also used them to ride the nature trail that snakes thru the Mayakoba grounds.
The pool is lovely and we would often stop our bikes there on the way back from the beach, cool off again and have an afternoon cocktail. A pleasure.
If you’re not fond of riding bikes, or just don’t feel like it you can call for a budgie and they will come pick you up.
Not only do you have a beautiful bedroom that opens up to a warm outdoor pool, a huge bathroom with outdoor bath, dressing rooms and walk in shower area, but also a hot tub AND a further room with huge TV, dining room, fridges sofa etc. Absolutely stunning.
The Breakfasts at Oriente (or Cello as well when busy) is quite magnificent. The location for one is stunning, but the offerings are fantastic.
I did enjoy the Mexican “eggs of the day”, truly authentic local food. The staff too here are great and nothing is too much trouble. Thanks Juane, management material!
Daytime choices for activities or rest are plentiful. The pool area is really nice.
Small but intimate and brilliantly serviced by the staff. Hugo, Cesar and Yelanda (the best Margarita maker in Mayakoba!)
Maybe a note here, if you want peace and quiet then avoid American school half term as it gets a little noisy round the pool. Head for the beach instead.
The Beach is beautiful. Just a short cycle or buggy ride through the woods and golf course leads to white sands and brilliant blue seas. Can be breezy, so make sure you protect properly.
Love the service here too, thanks all, and the lunches are fab! Each day there is a special offering, be it fish, paellas, special tacos. The guys often offer some free sampling to incise you. But try the Poke Bowls! Beautiful and fresh.
Other great day time activities on site include the eco boat trip, the free ferry round Mayakoba, numerous water sports, cycling the Nature Trail (fantastic) to the other hotels if you wish, visit to La Pueblita (Sunday is a small market there) and GOLF!
And on that final point, the Golf Course is magnificent. Unreal condition, challenging if you want or comfortable should you want to play off forward tees.
A total joy worth every dollar.
In the evening there are good options for dining. But firstly, should you want a pre dinner cocktail, your only real option (apart from at the table) is La Copa Bar in the lobby.
You do feel like you are in a lobby rather than in a bar, and should you choose to sit outside on the terrace then service can be a bit hit and miss I am afraid. ( The bars at Rosewood and Fairmont did look a lot more inviting).
We chose to give it a miss after a while and head straight to dinner and have an aperitif at the table instead.
The Restaurants.
Tomahawk/ Oriente
The breakfast restaurant reinvents itself in the evening. The main offering is Steaks cooked on a large open wood flame grill. Wonderful.Try the Sweet corn puree side dish. Unreal.
Occasionally there is a Mexican buffet on offer which I have to say is stunning as well.
Cello:
Great welcome, with a visit to the cold meat area and a glass of red. It’s very good Italian food.
Very enjoyable but would probably have preferred an authentic, high class Mexican restaurant instead. Just an opinion.
Saffron:
Wonderful setting, very good, authentic Thai flavours and always busy. At all the restaurants we were very fortunate to be introduced to Sarahi, the Executive chef.
Throughout our stay there was nothing more on the food front she could have done for us and we are very grateful to her for making our stay even more pleasurable.

Video Review of Le Reve Boutique Beachfront Hotel
The bungalows and master suite are quaint and very clean,
ALL the food prepared and displayed by a unique chef is the most delicious with one of our favorite Red Snapper – all served in clean, elegant dining room (or room service!).
Efficient pool bar is conveniently located. The small pool needs to be heated in the cold months as it is too cold to enjoy.
The green backyard space had a very comfortable hammock which I spent quite a bit of time in relaxing and reading.
The room itself was quite bare with just the bed, bedside tables and television. The shower was spacious and we had hot water throughout our stay, all hours of the day and night.
Wifi was great and we were able to access Netflix on the smart tv.
Le Reve is far enough north of town that you will either be eating at the hotel’s restaurant, or will need a rental or taxi for meals.
During our visit, there was no menu rotation, and while the selections are sufficiently diverse, they’re not extensive.
That said, if there is something you would like that can be prepared from the ingredients available, the kitchen will be happy to accommodate your requests Food was well prepared and presentation was quite nice.
Service was excellent.
Wine list was very incomplete and not of high quality, though it was explained that they were changing distributors and that this somehow had impacted the breadth of their selection.
I’m unclear as to how those two things relate, but until they get that squared away, you may want to pick up a few nice bottles in town to round out your dining experience.
There was no corkage charge for BYOB.
Didn’t spend much time at the bar, but the selection here was also lacking in breadth.
They have enough to cover most typical requests, I think, but don’t expect to have your single malt or Irish whiskey needs met.
Again, this may have something to do with the distributor, but if you’re particular about your brand, bring it along.
The pool, grounds and beach are very well maintained. Plenty of lounge space around the pool area. Lounges and umbrellas are set up daily at the beach except during inclement weather.
It’s a sand beach big enough for plenty of fun, though I believe in this area that the sand is likely brought in. Just beyond the water’s edge, you’ll find a solid rock bottom.
This isn’t unusual in the Playa area since beach erosion has been occurring along the coast for several years.
Mind the little ‘potholes’ in the rock bottom. The edges are often sharp and you’ll easily step into them unexpectedly.
I wore a pair of Crocs and found that adequate protection.
The beach area for the Hotel is spacious with beds spread well apart (unlike those further up the beach at the larger hotels where everyone was on top of each other).
The sand is lovely, there is plenty of shade from palm trees, but the sea was a disappointment, It is rocky and also when we were there every morning huge quantities of seaweed were washed up on the shore.
This is not just at the Le Reve beach but all around this coast line.
Every morning there are men trying to clean it up, which they then bury in the sand, but it is a helpless task and put us off going in the sea which was a shame. But not the Hotel’s fault I must add.

Guests can request free Continental breakfast to enjoy in the room’s balcony and also there is a variety of drinks offered at an extra cost.
Swaying palms, lush tropical gardens and sweeping Caribbean views frame the charming palapa-roofed architecture of Playa Palms Boutique Beach Hotel.
We welcome you to enjoy Playa del Carmen as it is meant to be experienced – where gracious service, superb amenities and exhilarating activities deliver just the Mexico you came to see. As the “alternative to all-inclusives,” Playa Palms offers a relaxed and intimate departure from the larger resorts on the Riviera Maya.

When relaxing at the hotel, guests have their choice of amenities and adventures.
Whether you want to indulge in the delicious local cuisine, partake in a wide range of water sports, or lounge in a hammock on your private terrace while basking in exquisite ocean views, Playa Palms is an elegant oasis for relaxation in the heart of Playa del Carmen.
Come to Playa Palms and Wake Up Inside Your Dream!
If you are the type of traveler that likes to relax and sleep on a reasonable time (say 10ish), then hotel is not for you. At the end of the day, it really depends on which room you have.
My theory is…..the closer you are to the Ocean, the less you will hear the night clubs. Note, there are 6 night clubs all on the same street which stay open fairly late in the morning.
There are so many pros about this place. Overall, it’s centrally located with beachfront access.
The cleaning crew and our interactions with the front desk person, Mr. Luis, were exemplary.
The rooms are a good size. A fresh fruit breakfast is served every morning for $5 USD, each morning. It’s gay friendly.
There was free WIFI, but the speed was really slow.
Overall, the vacation was great. The dance clubs in close proximity are beyond the hotel’s control, but will directly impact the guests’ vacation.
First of all, the location. Even rooms farther back have a partial ocean view and you can hear the ocean from anywhere.
When you get out of the pool, the beach is 4 steps away. You’ll love the ocean view and the boats tied near the shore.
It’s a gorgeous sight. Ocean access is pretty easy.
It’s dirty and stinky by the boats, but keep going- there’s a sandbar a short bit out with clear blue water, no rocks, and very few plants. It’s warm and shallow.
The pool is small, but nice. We loved that it was basically at our doorstep. It was rarely occupied while we were there.
Oh, but watch your step getting in. There’s a 3rd step that you can’t see. Every single person we saw who used the steps, fell in, including ourselves. Good thing it’s just into water. 🙂
We loved our room. The bed was great. The AC worked, everything was clean, and the furniture is fine. The mini kitchen space was nice to have.
Location. Facing a quiet street yet backing onto the beach with beautiful ocean views from most balconies, there were restaurants, bars, bus stations, ferries and shops literally minutes away.
Rooms. We upgraded from a ground-floor room to one on the third floor (#302) which was awesome.
We enjoyed early-morning breakfasts on the balcony (always on time), reading in our hammock, a spotless room with a comfortable bed and a great shower.
We ate all our meals out but the kitchen was well equipped with a blender for smoothies, etc. Internet speed and reliability were excellent.
The hotel is very well maintained and the rooms / studios are well equipped and planned.
All with big balconies facing the ocean.
The studios and the entire facility is very clean.
You will have full or partly ocean view from all studios. The little pool is more for decoration than swimming.
The sunbeds on the beach are placed between palms and facing the fishing boats that are anchored in front of the hotel.
The staff told us that we could swim between the boats but we never did and we never saw anyone doing that. Instead people took a quick dip in the pool and then returned to the sunbeds.
Alternatively (for most people staying there) walk 5 minutes to the right and find the big beach with a lot of beach clubs with sunbeds and services.
The beaches here are unfortunately covered by sea grass every morning.
This is being taken away during most of the morning until lunch.
You should also be aware of the erosion of beach since the ocean flushes the sand into the sea.
The beach transformed heavily during our stay there.
Since this is a small hotel you should not expect an army of waiters and service staff.
They do provide a small complementary breakfast buffet on the beach every morning.
But if you are looking for a full breakfast there are many beach restaurants offering that in the area.
The hotel is great and is a true gem hidden between the big marble palaces along the beach. Well located and close to everything.
You should be aware of that being close to everything in this case really mean being close to a very hectic nightlife.
We are talking about a night life that is louder than Las Vegas just outside of this hotel.
The noise was unbelievable and it goes on until 5AM. However – when entering the hotel most of that noise is gone and when you close the balcony door to your studio it is almost completely silent.

THOMPSON MAIN HOUSE Enjoy sun-splashed luxury in the heart of Riviera Maya at our dreamscape rooftop oasis on Quinta Avenida, Thompson Main House.

Rest and relax by day, then swap bathing suits for dancing shoes and take the night to another level at our rooftop pool oasis, where stunning panoramic views and danceable beats will keep you out late into the Riviera Maya night.
A rare combination of lively nightlife, exquisite cuisine and space to still escape…Thompson Playa del Carmen quite literally sits above the rest on the Riviera Maya.

Had an amazing time staying at this hotel. The room was a double queen room very spacious and ocean facing.
The staff at this hotel is incredible – super friendly and always going the extra mile. Aside from the usual daily cleaning service where they restocking the supplies they would also come by around 7pm and ask if we needed anything else and give us cookies / another snack.
The bed, pillows and bed sheets were probably the most comfortable I have ever had the pleasure of sleeping on.
The bath robes were also incredible.. just make sure you don’t “accidentally” take them as they were priced at $150USD.
My suite was spacious, very tastefully designed and executed, and if desirable… even quiet during the nighttime festivities up-and-down the Avenida!
The rooftop pool, bar and restaurant amenities are first rate. Catch is an excellent restaurant, and highly recommended by this reviewer.
Even more, it’s tough to beat the variety of available breakfast entrees and early morning views atop the Hotel roof.
In close, this hotel’s ideal location puts one right in the middle of restaurants, night clubs, and designer shopping venues. All within easy walking distance.
Last, airport shuttle transport is a snap with easy accommodation by the hotel.
This hotel is centrally located which makes it super convenient to walk to restaurants, shops & the beach.
We were a group of 8 then 10, it was perfect because it’s more of a boutique style hotel & its a very nice alternative to a large resort.
They have an amazing restaurant at the rooftop called Catch, a very nice rooftop pool & amazing views. I wish I would have stayed longer to enjoy cocktails at the pool.
The Thompson staff is AMAZING. They are very attentive and go above and beyond to make your stay enjoyable.
The entire property smells great and is very clean. No issues with our room or overall property, everything was perfect.
Loved staying at a boutique hotel instead of an all-inclusive.
I have stayed at mega resorts in PDC a couple of times, but I really enjoyed being able to walk around downtown and have a variety of restaurants and bars to go to.
I ate at all 3 Thompson restaurants: Catch, Cinco, and C-Grill. Cinco has an amazing breakfast, my favorite was the coconut cream pancakes.
Catch was one of the best dinners I had in PDC, pricier, but very worth it.

5. Magic Blue Spa Boutique Hotel 5* – Playa del Carmen Gay Resort

An oasis located in the heart of Playa del Carmen, only steps away from the city’s famous 5th Avenue where all the exciting nightlife, restaurants, shopping and attractions gather and a few blocks from the beach and different beach clubs where the hotel guests have access.
Magic Blue Spa Boutique Hotel is an Adults Only property that features luxurious accommodations along with first-class amenities and services.

The SPA has a great variety of massage and treatments with special prices and promotions all year long. As part of the hotel services, the Experiences Desk, Pool Butler and Guest Relations Team will provide attentive service to ensure the most during your stay.
Magic Blue Spa Boutique Hotel features the fastest Wifi free of charge in Playa del Carmen, unique promotions at its Brazilian style restaurant located on site, the best rated tour experience company and more!!!..
Plus yoga and a relaxing area for outdoor romantic massages and valet parking.
The number one attraction for this hotel, in my opinion, is the location. It couldn’t be in a better spot in Playa del Carmen – right off 5th Avenue, a short walk to the beach, bus stations, shopping and restaurants.
We loved that we could look up highly rated places to eat and find they were only a short walk from the hotel.
Despite being in a very popular and busy area, the hotel feels like an urban oasis.
The way the property is laid out, with the rooms and lobby on the perimeter and the pool and bar in the middle, really blocks out a lot of the noise from the street and brings a sense of tranquility to the property.
The numerous palm trees and greenery along with the style of the rooms really give a feeling that you’re in the jungle!
The rooms themselves were perfect for a vacation like this. They’re nothing fancy but the bed was plenty comfortable and there was plenty of storage space for our belongings.
My favorite part of room was the balcony, which had a hammock and small sofa. It’s the perfect place to have a morning coffee or beers in the evening. One tiny complaint is that there is no free coffee in the room.
You can use coffee pods for a fee or head down to the reception area and get complimentary coffee.
I just enjoy rolling out of bed and being able to make myself a cup without having to get fully dressed.
Included in our nightly rate was breakfast at the adjoining Brazilian steakhouse.
The quality and variety of the food was top notch. Often we could load up on the breakfast buffet and not need to eat again until the evening.
So although it’s not an all-inclusive resort, this helped us save money for sure.
The pool and surrounding area are fantastic. There are quite a few tables surrounding the pool and bar area and we usually didn’t have any trouble grabbing a place to sit for a few hours.
The staff working that area was always really friendly and offered up complimentary (non-alcoholic) drinks to the people sitting by the pool.
Additionally the hotel offered passes to a few different beach clubs.
We decided to visit Zenzi which was less than 5 minutes walking from the hotel.
It could have been the fact that it wasn’t peak season but there didn’t appear to be anyone checking passes at this club.
We stood around for a bit waiting to be checked in but a guy just told us we could grab any open chair. We did and got great service right next to the ocean…you can’t beat that!
We did book one tour through the hotel which was the Chichen Itza Clasico tour.
The concierge was very thorough and explained all the options and pricing really well.
He even had some VR goggles that we could use to see some of the sites for the tour.
Being able to book and pay through the hotel reduces a lot of the stress you might encounter elsewhere. Although we may have been able to get a better price through a different company, I knew this would be reputable and I wouldn’t have to worry about any scams.
Overall I think this is an excellent hotel for the price and it’s the perfect place to stay for anyone looking for an alternative to the all-inclusive resort.
I felt like we were able to experience so much more of the city this way.
Being so close to everything allows for more spontaneity and independence. Apart from a few planned excursions we were pretty much able to relax and go at our own pace the whole time.
If you’re vacationing with other couples or a group of people it’s perfect because you don’t need to have every detail planned out, you can just walk outside and find anything you want close by.
