Great location immediately opposite Praia da Rocha (white sand long beach with lovely boardwalk in both directions). Modern hotel with large pool next to downstairs restaurant serving huge breakfast selection of fruits, breads, eggs etc and cold cuts/spreads.
Everything from start to finish was excellent, in particular the hotel location (right across from the most beautiful beach) and the fabulous view from our balcony. k. The beach is beautiful and has fabulous sandy coves.
Our bonus discovery was handy bus stop opposite hotel/circuito urbano # 33 which took us to Portimao for the princely sum of 3 Euros for 2 (about 3 kilometers to Alameda Square). Post office and small store behind hotel were also highly convenient. If you have time take in Museum which features history of sardine industry.
Very spacious room and bathroom. Large comfortable bed. Ample and varied breakfast. Convenient descent to the beach. The hotel needs some repairs in some parts. The pool is located poorly between the hotel and other buildings, the walls of which are needed of repair. Because of the tall buildings there is almost no sun in the pool area and the view of the ugly walls of the neighboring building from the pool area is not particularly conducive to relaxation. Near the hotel there are many bars and restaurants, a taxi rank and rental cars and bicycles point.
The pool is 1.4 meters deep throughout with steps into it. I was expecting it to be cold but it was quite pleasant. There are a number of sun-beds around it and then another raised wooden area with a few more sun beds. The floor gets hot and a warm day so take some footwear especially for children. The sun beds are all quickly taken as there are about 20. There is room for about another 20 and that’s the only recommendation I’d have to the hotel is there’s plenty of room for more sun beds so it maybe worth purchasing more. The toilets for around the swimming pool well the men’s were very very clean and modern.
Breakfast was excellent all the traditional European as well as American foods were available.
Very close to beach access , very good choice at breakfast buffet. Huge king-size bed, large room , good bathroom excellent housekeeping. Towels changed daily. Rooms spotless. Stocked mini bar/fridge very expensive! No tea coffee etc in rooms , bubble bath and soap provided was very good quality.

The air conditioning units worked well, and we were very comfortable.
The room had two balconies, but as one had no furniture we only used one, which had a plastic table and chairs. The chairs were great for a dinner, but when you sit on them for a few hours in the evening they could be a little more comfortable.

3. Hotel Santa Catarina Algarve 3* – Gay Friendly Hotel Portimao
Situated only 50 m from Praia da Rocha Beach, Hotel Santa Catarina offers rooms with private balconies, some overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. Free parking is available on site.
The air-conditioned rooms of Hotel Santa Catarina Algarve are simply decorated with wooden furnishings and tiled floors. All rooms are equipped with free internet access, satellite TV and a minibar.
Hotel Santa Catarina’s restaurant serves typical dishes from the Algarve, as well as international cuisine. The bar serves a wide variety of drinks, including local wines.
Hotel Santa Catarina Algarve, is a new 3 stars hotel very well located in the first line of the beach (Praia da Rocha) in front of the Casino, at about 4 km from the center of the city and 60 km from Faro’s international airport. It has 69 rooms, sea and land view, 6 suits, restaurant, bar, living room, and a panoramic lift with an excellent view for Praia da Rocha. The rooms are all well equipped with balconys, private bathroom, hair dryer, telephone, tv, minibar, air conditioning, heating and safe.
The position/location of the hotel is really good. It is just a short walk to the ‘strip’ where most of bars and restaurants and shops are. It is also only a few minutes walk to the beach. Although we had a street facing room there really wasn’t much noise.
The staff were very welcoming and helpful with local buses etc and sorted any issues very promptly.
The WiFi was very good. The aircon was effective when we used it. The safe was reasonably priced at 2.50 euros a day and there was a small but useful fridge in the room.
Nice 3 star hotel in great location only a few minutes walk from Praia da Rocha beach.Shops, gay bars and restaurants all close by.Room was clean and comfortable with housekeeping everyday.
The room with a seaview was superb with excellent views from the balcony over the beach towards the lighthouse. Just be aware there is no pool.
This hotel is based in the quieter half of “the strip”, where the more expensive hotels are. However this hotel is marvellous value at about 1/3 of the price. The breakfast is free and although it is basic and eaten in a very crowded space at times, (you can eat it between 07:00 and 10:30)you can change your time to when it is not so busy. I was given an upgrade to include either lunch or dinner at no extra cost and a room with a seaview.
All 3 sittings serve a choice of foods all of which i was very happy to eat although there were a few moans going around. The room was cleaned every day and fresh towels supplied if needed. There was a fridge and safe also in the single room the bathroom was very small and had a very small shower but it was still excellent value. Alas no kettle was supplied and wifi was only available in the comom areas. If there were any problems at all there is a 24hr reception and it is dealt with quickly.

4. Tivoli Marina Portimao 4* – Gay Hotels Portimao
Situated in a complex overlooking the sea and Portimão
, this hotel is a 5-minute walk from Praia de Rocha. It has 2 seawater pools, a children’s and offers air-conditioned accommodation with furnished balconies. The studios and apartments at the Tivoli Marina Portimao are decorated in neutral colours and include modern furnishings. They come equipped satellite TV and have kitchenettes with dining areas. The units are divided among the property’s 3 buildings, respectively named Marina Sun, Marina Deck and .
In the morning, the Tivoli serves an American breakfast. The hotel has 2 restaurants that offer panoramic
and international cuisine, and a snack bar that provides a variety of salads and snacks.Four stars but could have been five, great location, superb dining room looking on to the marina great rooms with with stunning views, great staff friendly and helpful no charge for AC or safety deposit box but with so many nice restaurants near bye the food is overpriced and average apart from the fantastic breakfast buffet, the drink is overpriced, with the mark up on the wine
The beach is only a short walk from the hotel and you can either walk along the beach and then up to Praia da rocha, or up a flight of steps by the end of the beach and along the main road. It is also worth catching the water taxi across to Ferragudo for dinner, you can buy tickets at reception or on the taxi directly. There is a small shop near the beach to buy drinks/lunch etc
The swimming pool is saltwater and while it gets busy in the afternoons we were generally able to get sun beds and umbrellas at various times in the day. Pool towels are also provided.
There are 2 Marinas next to each other, the Reception and restaurants along with other accommodations split them. The resort has bars, shops and restaurants along the southern side and is right next to the Rocha beach which is massive and clean. Buses and Hop on/off buses stop by the reception roundabout area.
Bars and restaurants close to the marina are pricey and touristy so if you prefer to eat in authentic Portuguese restaurants where the locals eat this is not for you.
It’s beautifully situated, and the moorish architecture, of the 2 storey apartments is sympathetic to the surrounding marina. The room was spotless, as were all areas of the hotel. Staff were welcoming and helpful, if you needed them, and quietly went about their business. In fact the hotel was the quietest we’ve stayed in, despite it being pretty full.
Breakfast was good, lots of variety, and the staff would quickly clear and re lay tables enabling us to sit outside overlooking the marina. Unless you like to lay in the sun, or by the pool, there’s not a whole lot to do in Portimao. Although the beach was lovely, and so clean. Walking along the boardwalk each morning and evening was very pleasant, and we ate in a couple of good restaurants on the front.

Beach boutique Hotel Member of Relais & Châteaux SPA by Loccitane VISTA Restaurante – 1 Michelin Star.
This Hotel stands for its promise: relax, elegance, service and quality. I always book a Character room with sea view in the main building and it is really an experience to wake up every morning and look to the blue ocean in front of you. The room is fully equipped, and it creates a very modern and at the same time traditional atmosphere.
The cleanliness is outstanding. The food is another key element in the experience. Besides having a one Michelin star, it offers a wonderful breakfast and the possibility of having light lunch or dinner by the pool.
Also, worth to mention the Spa operated by L ´Occitane that offers a wide range of treatments.
But why I like the most besides the friendliness of the staff, is the relax atmosphere you lived in this Hotel. You can hear the ocean, the wind and the seagulls. Maybe its location over a cliff is what contributes to create this atmosphere.
If you are looking for a true relax, outstanding service and friendly atmosphere this Hotel is the perfect choice
ROOMS: The beds were spotlessly clean, the mattress wonderfully comfortable. The bathroom was pristine and the L’Occitane bath products were absolutely lovely. The cleaning staff had such an eye for detail. The fresh fruit upon arrival was such a welcome snack, and the chocolates in the evening were a nice touch. I especially loved the corner room overlooking the beach — we had the most wonderful, soothing sea breeze fluttering our curtains as we rested during the midday.
SERVICE: The service was absolutely top-notch, truly world-class. I would give ten stars if I could. My mother has very limited mobility, and the staff went through great pains to ensure that she was accommodated. Rather than making her feel like a bother, they were so gracious and kind — we really appreciated that.
DINING: The breakfast included in the rate was lovely. Their spread was particularly good for an included meal, with fresh fruit (the tangy passion fruit slices and luscious oranges were my favorite) and real honeycomb (wow!), as well as a variety of tasty pastries. The eggs that were made to order weren’t just tossed together but presented beautifully – I recommend the Benedict. As for dinner, my family had the privilege to dine at their Michelin star restaurant and it was wonderful. We did the seven course tasting menu and it was heaven. To put this into context, we spent three days prior to our trip to the Algarve eating our way through amazing restaurants in San Sebastian, and this place was highly competitive. The flavors, the artistry, and the overall dining experience was absolutely unforgettable. Again, the service truly shone.
The hotel is set back from a mostly pedestrian road with restaurants and nightlife that skew on the tackier side of things. It reminded me of the Jersey Shore. That said, it can be fun if you’re up for it. There are plenty of good restaurants in the area for nice dinners.
Once you buzz into the hotel property, it’s a whole different ambiance. It’s quiet and has lovely landscaping and a wonderful pool. The views of the Atlantic are amazing.
