Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) persons in Cyprus may face legal challenges not experienced by non-LGBT residents. Both male and female same-sex sexual activity are legal in Cyprus, and civil unions which grant several of the rights and benefits of marriage have been legal since December 2015.

Traditionally, the socially conservative Greek Orthodox Church has had significant influence over public opinion and politics regarding LGBT rights. However, ever since Cyprus sought membership in the European Union, it had to change its human rights legislation, including its laws regarding sexual orientation and gender identity. Attitudes towards members of the LGBT community are evolving and becoming increasingly more accepting and tolerant.

Protaras has a long history of being a  gay friendly resort and in downtown we can find a few gay friendly bars as well as Secrets is the most famous gay bar in Protaras, Cyprus.

Protaras is a resort town in eastern Cyprus, known for its beaches and for Fig Tree Bay with its old, lone fig tree. Above the bay area excavated Hellenistic tombs. To the northwest, atop a rock, the limestone Church of Profitis Ilias marks one end of a nature trail that leads to Konnos Beach. To the south, Cape Greco National Forest Park has clear waters and protected pine forest trails.

From the minute we entered the hotel to the time we had to say goodbye we had the most amazing time. The food was fantastic and the staff were absolutely amazing. Couldn’t fault anything.

The hotel over looks Fig Tree bay with a beautiful view. Not all rooms have it but still lovely. Our room was great in size being a deluxe studio gave plenty of room including a lovely double sofa to sit and relax on if we didn’t want to sit on the balcony.

From the edge of the property by the larger of the swimming pools you crossed the path to some wooden steps that took you to a jetty to swim straight into the sea. This was fantastic and better than walking down to the beach and wading in.

The quality of the staff is superb, so personal, so efficient, so pleased that you have chosen to stay there. The manager was often evident, especially at meal times, checking everything was okay.

We had a deluxe studio room which was excellent. Spacious, comfortable, everything you’d expect in a quality hotel. The balcony being on the fifth floor gave us super views over the bay.

The location right on the seafront is perfect. There are special entry points over the rocks creating easy access into the sea. There is a long walkway taking you past the local beaches and is very popular with walkers and joggers.

The hotel was full but there were plenty of sun beds, shades, and beds for guests, all set in delightful, varied areas to suit all tastes and requirements.

Just came home from a week at the King Jason in Protaras. It did not disappoint..

We have been to the Fig Tree Bay area of Protaras many times before however this was our 1st visit to this particular hotel and will not be our last in fact we booked for next year before we left!!

Stunning hotel, the management and staff are brilliant as is the rep who is always on hand with a wealth of experience of the area.

The staff working poolside constantly keep you refreshed and the cocktails are divine (especially my “special” gin slush).

I cannot stress enough how fantastic the staff are at this hotel. Nothing is too much trouble for anyone it would seem. There is a reason why this hotel has so much repeat business the management should be incredibly proud of their team, in my option they have nailed it..

My partner has a food allergy which the kitchen staff were completely understanding of and were so helpful for our entire stay so much so that there was never any need to worry for him.

The food is lovely, all cooked fresh in an open kitchen. There was a different theme every evening

We had a deluxe studio which was stunning, up to date decor and cleaned daily. Plenty of room and storage space.

My only concern about recommending this place is that it may become more difficult for me to book in the future.

2. Infinity Blu – Designed for Adults 4* – Gay Friendly Hotels Protaras

Infinity Blu - Designed for Adults
Infinity Blu – Designed for Adults

Located right on the sandy beach of Pernera in Cyprus, Infinity Blu – Designed for Adults features a pool, a sea-view sun terrace and a poolside snack bar. It offers free WiFi in public areas and air-conditioned units with a balcony.

All studios and apartments of Infinity Blu – Designed for Adults feature a kitchenette with dining area, fridge and electric kettle. Each unit is equipped with a flat-screen TV, a safe and a radio. The private bathroom comes with a bathtub. Some units enjoy views over the Mediterranean Sea.

Guests can start their day with a buffet breakfast served daily at the dining area. Coffee, drinks and light meals can also be enjoyed at the poolside snack bar throughout the day.

Louis Infinity Blu is exceptionally situated in the area of Pernera, stretching off the Protaras coast line and is the latest addition to All-Inclusive and Adults Only Hotels. Its prime location provides unobstructed views of the crystal clear waters of the Mediterranean Sea.

The modernity and location of the hotel is the perfect formula for the most relaxing holiday by the beach, offering an aura of tranquillity with a beautiful garden leading down to the waterfront and the Award Winning Blue Flag Pernera Bay. It is the ideal choice for those who want to experience an unforgettable beach holiday in Cyprus as it offers our guests the ultimate place to unwind, relax and soak up the sunny, infinitely blue views of the Mediterranean.

We have recently returned from a wonderful week at Louis Infinity Blu and wished it could have been longer.

It’s a fabulous hotel, adults only and exclusively British, very small and intimate with gorgeous grounds that literally take you right onto the lovely sandy beach. We are very much beach people and not keen on lying around swimming pools but we really didn’t feel the need to take sunbeds on the beach as the lovely grassy areas, which is where we chose to sunbathe, are practically on it anyway, just a few steps down onto the sand and the sea.

The staff are all amazing, we can’t single anyone out for special praise, as every single person that we met was genuinely wonderful and obviously happy in their jobs as they all gave first class customer service, a team to be proud of.

Much has been said about the quality of the food and again, this is spot-on, fabulously presented and well-cooked and so much choice. I can honestly say, it is the best food we have ever had in an all-inclusive hotel, so much so, that we decided not to bother going out for a meal or two like we would normally do.

The hotel is an easy 15-20 minute walk into the centre of Protaras and it’s a really pleasant stroll along the boardwalk, but unless you want to go shopping or have a bit more night life, then personally, I wouldn’t bother as there are shops, bars and restaurants much closer to the hotel in Pernera itself.

We absolutely loved every minute of our holiday at Louis Infinity Blu and had a gorgeous room on the 4th floor with a huge wrap around balcony. Great touches like robes in the room, shower gel and hand wash provided and really good quality beach towels which saves you having to take these things with you. My only comment about the room is that the balcony is so big that it could easily take a couple of sun loungers as well as the table and two chairs, so maybe this would be something for the management team to think about for next year.

My only other suggestion for improvement is to please get some plastic champagne flutes for the beach bar as drinking Prosecco out of tumbler glasses just isn’t the same.

If you like a lot of entertainment and daytime activities in your hotel then this is definitely not the place for you. But if you like first class service, an excellent location, fabulous food and lovely rooms then give it a try – you won’t be disappointed.

We will definitely return.

3. Capo Bay Hotel 5* – LGBT Friendly Hotels Protaras

Capo Bay Hotel
Capo Bay Hotel

The Capo Bay Hotel in Protaras, Cyprus is exceptionally located in the heart of Protaras. This beach hotel in Protaras features gardens with running waters and fish ponds lead down to the waterfront and the Blue Flag Fig Tree Bay.

Capo Bay guest rooms are equipped with air conditioning, satellite TV and hot drink facilities. Free WiFi is available throughout. Several rooms face the Mediterranean Sea.

Buffet breakfast is served every morning, and the hotel’s restaurant provides far-reaching sea views. Lunch and dinner are served at the Koi lounge bar, at the a la carte restaurant or the pool bar when the weather is warm.

Ideal for relaxing holidays, the Capo Bay has a spa centre which includes a sauna, hot tub, steam bath, hammam, Vichy shower, a fully equipped gym and a 15 m heated indoor lap pool. Recreation facilities include a modern fitness centre and a scuba diving school.

Along picturesque Fig Tree Bay beach, this luxurious, modern resort is 6 km from hiking at the scenic Cape Greco National Forest Park.

Polished rooms come with balconies and flat-screen TVs, plus free Wi-Fi, minibars, and tea and coffee making facilities. Some rooms come with sea views and whirlpool tubs, and suites add living rooms. An upgraded bi-level suite features a terrace with a hot tub. Room service is available.

Amenities include a hip lobby bar and 4 chic restaurants, including Italian, Mediterranean and Asian eateries. There’s also an outdoor pool and an indoor heated lap pool, as well as a plush spa, a gym and beach access.

Capo Bay is set on Fig Tree Bay, perhaps the most famous beach in Cyprus. Modern, chic and elegantly understated, Capo Bay’s light filled lobby, welcomes our guests. The designers have managed to bring, throughout the Hotel, the colors of the sandy beaches and the gorgeous shades of the Mediterranean Sea.

The use of natural materials is obvious in every part of the property; from the oak handmade furniture to the cotton/linen tapestries which create an ambience that calms and relaxes. The hotel is sure to delight you with its shimmering views, its irresistible restaurants with their fusion of flavors, and the tranquil atmosphere that prevails around the hotel.

We booked a sea view room however were taken aback at how small the rooms are. They are extremely compact with the bathroom in full view of the room. The breakfast was plentiful with a very good choice. Plus eating breakfast overlooking Fig Tree Bay was an added bonus. The rooms are kept very clean by the hard working cleaning ladies.

Just a stone’s throw away from the beach and a short walk onto the main strip it couldn’t be better situated in my eyes.

The hotel itself is spotless inside, the rooms are very modern and well decorated as the hotel is itself, we stayed b&b and the breakfast service was spot on, plenty of choice from fruit, cereals, yoghurts, pastries or the good old full English breakfast.

The only negative I would say is the food is a little overpriced around the pool area, but as I said you’re only a short walk away from all the bars/restaurants on the Protaras strip.
No need to bring any beach towels with as they are provided by the hotel,so a bit extra weight can be saved in your luggage!!

Also, probably the biggest plus point was you get sunbeds around the pool area allocated to you for the entire time of your stay, so no 6am mad dash’s to make sure you get a decent spot!!

Perfect location. Fig tree bay is the best beach in Cyprus. Incredible clear and clean water. Loved the fact that the pool staff on your arrival makes a reservation for you own private sunbeds for your entire stay. No need to rush after breakfast to find good spots each day. Georgics taverna right next to the hotel had good service and tasty feta and other lunch dishes.

Breakfast was great, but we did not have dinner at the hotel, but instead explored restaurants in the area. The lunch in the hotel was ok but not really value for money. If you like me enjoy swimming in seawater more than the pool, I recommend finding sunbeds close to the beach below the adult pool. From here you can walk a short distance to the beach.

ROOM
A little on the small side but well appointed. Shame they still insist on a mini-bar than giving you a fridge. There is A/C but not turned on when we were there, this was disappointing, too loud to have the balcony door open at night (more on this later!). Bathroom too small, not enough hanging space and nasty shower curtain. Tea/Coffee making a nice touch. Cleaning service was good but some towels and sheets seen better days! Beds comfy

FOOD
We were on ‘dine around’ which means you get choice between the buffet restaurant, Koi (asian-sort of), mamas (greek, pool side) and Cucina (italian). The positives- all places were pleasant and offer a good choice, you can also choose lunch or dinner which is great. Downside is that the food was hit and miss, nothing was bad but some things a little bland/underwhelming. We thought being as it was a la carte it would be better than usual half board buffet but we found it mainly similar quality.

Breakfast buffet served until 10am. Would be nice for this to be a bit later…we’re on holiday! Nice food and plentiful. Whole fresh fruit would be nice.

FACILITIES
The strongest part of the hotel. Pool areas are nicely done, clean and well maintained. fresh pool towels from the attendant and reserved sunbeds for your stay. Plus all of that, there is an adults only spa area- with lap indoor pool, sauna and steam room. We really enjoyed this. Wifi available throughout for free. 5/5.

LOCATION
Positioned right on the beach front this is great to be able to have hotel facilities married to the beach. The bay is clear water and nice sand. It is also very shallow- ideal for kids. Bar next door ‘George Zefkas’ is friendly and cheaper! Out the front is the strip of bars, gift shops and supermarkets.
