Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) rights in the United States have evolved in recent decades. However, LGBT Americans may still face some legal and many social challenges not experienced by non-LGBT residents, particularly in states with large conservative populations, such as in the Deep South; in rural areas; and in some Native American tribal nations.
U.S. federal law does not explicitly include protections against discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity. In June 2020, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that sexual orientation and gender identity are included under “sex” as a prohibited ground of employment discrimination in the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

wo nights here on a three week American road trip. What did we like? The location, the quality of welcome, the free wine and snacks in the lobby (a chance to chat to fellow guests), the pleasant room. What not? The excessive price for overnight valet parking and the ridiculous cost of breakfast (go to Eva’s Bakery across the road!).
And we loved the juxtaposition of the Sunday morning Mormon Tabernacle Choir with the annual Gay Pride march – both inspiring.
The hotel is located in a building that was once a bank so many rooms are slightly oddly shaped and the decor style is somewhat dated, though clean and comfortable. The location is great – downtown on the corner of Main Street that within easy walking leads to the city shopping centre and Mormon Temple, as well as bars and restaurants (check the Copper Onion for casual dinner). Note the location also means some local homeless people lingering on Main St, but all was calm and we felt perfectly safe.
Plenty of cheaper self-park options around the same block as the hotel (hotel valet service is $25/day).
Small but excellent gym with some free weights. No hotel spa, but in-room masseuse was good.
My husband and I stayed here on our honeymoon, and it was a very nice stop on our road trip. We were a little apprehensive about being a gay couple in Utah, but the staff at the Kimpton put us right at ease. We arrived just before the end of their complimentary wine hour in the lobby – a lovely surprise!
They were kind enough to upgrade us to a junior suite with a large sitting area, and the decor was sleek and the bed comfortable. The hotel’s right on the light rail line, which is free downtown, so it couldn’t be more convenient.

Little America Hotel turned out to be a fantastic place to stay. The lobby was quite plush and the hand sanitizing stations placed at regular intervals were very reassuring. The folks at the front desk wore masks and glass screens were installed at the front desk separating patrons from the employees at the front desk. Our two queen bed room was quite spacious and was pleasantly made. An excellent view of the downtown and the mountains beyond from the balcony was an added charm. There was a big TV, a couch and a few chairs in the room.
The bathroom was spotless and the toiletries were of excellent quality. The only glitch was that our bathroom door was not locking properly. A mini fridge was lacking in the room, that would have been one thing to add to the room. The hotel has a coffee shop and a gift shop and I really liked the decor of the hotel front desk and lobby areas. The Temple Square is around a mile from the hotel and there are a number of restaurants in within walking distance. There is a light rail station quite close to the hotel.
