1. Hotel Casa 69  – Gay Friendly Hotels San Jose Costa Rica

Hotel Casa 69
Hotel Casa 69

Located in central San Jose, Hotel Casa 69 offers a garden patio, free Wi-Fi in public areas and individually decorated rooms with cable TV. The National Museum is just a 10-minute walk away.

Each bright room at Hotel Casa 69 features a fan, a fridge, a radio-alarm clock and a safe. The private bathrooms include a shower.

A continental breakfast is served in the garden patio from 0:700 until 10:00 each morning and you can also choose from our breakfast menu at an additional charge. You will find various Costa Rican and international restaurants in the surrounding area.

Historic house built by one of San Jose’s most prominent families in 1938 is now a B&B. Let this beautiful old house be your home away from home in San Jose. Located just four blocks east of the National Museum, Barrio California, just 10 minutes walking distance to the center of town.

Enjoy our rooftop view deck and garden. You can walk to all museums and places of interest like National Theater, Jade Museum, Plaza de la Cultura, Simon Bolivar Zoo as well as many very good restaurants, bars of all kinds and casinos in minutes, city center and PreColumbian Gold Museum. Shopping, San Pedro mall, central market, and the Artisan Market are within a comfortable walking distance. We also have a rooftop patio where you can enjoy the sun, a coffee or drink with friends, while you look out at the sights and mountains around San Jose.

Nothing has changed other than the owner and some upgrades on the room decoration. The hotel is still gay managed, and same staff as I’ve seen for years. I had no problem with bringing guests to my room. Over half the guests are gay.

The location is great, only 15 minutes walking from the National Theatre. 5 minutes walking to Sauna Hispalis, 15 to Sauna Paris, 10 to Puchos, 20 to La Avispa. Safe walking here during the day and early evening, but I would take a taxi after 7PM. Really, the only criticism I have is there is no internet signal in the rooms on the east side of the street.

A perfect place for your homebase while traveling in Costa Rica. We feel so welcomed and safe there. Her staff is fabulous. The place is spotlessly clean. They all go beyond their ways to accommodate all your need. Even though this place is not exclusively for gay travel anymore, Donna is still your graceful gay friendly host and she still keeps the lovely gay staff from the previous owner as a team. I say this place is even better with the mix crowd now. I have met some fun guests here.

Really, looking no further for your place to stay in San Jose… I will keep coming back to CASA 69 and highly recommend to other fellow open minded travellers. This place is so special… this is coming from me someone who also have my own International hotel business for over than 15 years and world traveler myself.

We stayed at Casa 69 for one night before our trip to Puerto Viejo and two more nights upon our return to San Jose. Casa 69 is really a gem! The previous reviewers were all correct regarding the beautiful design and landscaping of this little hotel, the cleanliness of the rooms as well as the great service by the staff (especially Reinaldo and Edwin) and by Kurt and Michel.

Some people may be annoyed by the train noises that started at around 6:30 am but, in a tropical country, it is bright by 5 am and people start their day early. Breakfast was very good, we loved the jam! Cannot find such delicious jams in Canada! Each room has a convenient safe with programmable access code. We loved the beautiful fresh flowers and the charming old furniture of our room.

The area can be difficult to find for taxis but you can just tell taxis to drop you near the Embassy of Nicaragua and walk from from there (1 min). The area is very safe, we walked back to Casa 69 from downtown around midnight and felt very comfortable. It takes about 20-25 min to walk to the Central Market area. The neighbourhood has all the services (groceries stores, ATMs…) and there are also a few very good restaurants such as the Trocadero.

If you’re gay, Kurt knows all about San Jose’s nightlife and can recommend you all the gay places to go each night.

The location is in the city, and was not as difficult for taxis to find as I might have thought. It is quite hidden. The rooms we stayed in were lovely — beautiful art, clean bathrooms, comfortable beds, and a nicely stocked mini fridge.

The breakfast was simple and perfect – bread, jams, fresh fruit and juice, and delicious coffee. The staff was very helpful and polite. The rooms had satellite tv which was a nice surprise, we were even able to watch part of march madness!

The only cons that come to mind is that our room the first night was a bit noisy. But it wasn’t really a big deal for us city dwellers. We would definitely go back! It’s always nice to support gay friendly businesses (that are also straight friendly!)

My bedroom(s) was more than I expected – surrounding an inner courtyard (although the outside traffic noise during the day is still apparent as everywhere else in San Jose) with a comfortable double bed, fan, cable TV, minbar, safe (important for those people who bring guests back, or want their valuables secured) and nice shower/toilet. The simple delicious breakfast of coffee/tea, fruit, bread and jams/butter was more than adequate for me – although there is an ala carte menu for those looking for more protein

The customers tend to be a mixture of gay men/couples and straight couples – with the gay people mixing in the dining room/lounge whilst the straight couples kept to themselves in their rooms or the courtyard. I enjoyed chatting and getting to know some of the guests during my stay.

Casa 69 is close to the Nicaragua Embassy, and is about 15-20 mins walk from downtown (depending whether you are walking uphill or downhill). I had no problems with walking in the area during the evening to the bars or restaurants – although like the rest of San Jose I would say you should be alert and careful with where you walk. The gay bars/discos are within walking distance although it is only a short taxi ride for those more cautious.

2. Colours Oasis Resort 3* – Gay Friendly Hotels San Jose

Colours Oasis Resort
Colours Oasis Resort

Offering an outdoor pool and a la carte restaurant, Colours Oasis Resort is located in San José. There is also a fitness centre and a hot tub at this gay-friendly property.

Rooms here will provide you with a wardrobe and a cable TV. There is also a private bathroom with a toilet and spa bath. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout.

The on-site restaurant serves inviting lunch and dinner options, and guests also enjoy a fully stocked bar. A wide range of other restaurants and bars can be found within a 5-minute walk.

Verdant, tropical, warm, beautiful year-round raft rapids, stroll rainforests, hike volcanoes, sample hottest gay nightlife in Latin America or just lounge poolside, Colours, your adventure home base exploring “The Wilds of Costa Rica”“. Premier, largest and only of its kind in the Capital City, designed for our deserving gay guests.

Inclusive boutique hotel serving “the community” and their straight friends, conveniently located – stately Boulevard Rohrmoser. Stylish, intimate complex with all the amenities, bar and restaurant plus our renowned attentive 24 hour reception service.

Cannot say anything bad about this very lovely gayhotel! We had such a great time here and the main lady in the reception was so, so lovely and felt genuinely wonderful Everything is just so welcoming and beautiful and we had such a great time! If I’d say anything that needs improvement it’ll be to maybe have more events and inviting offers (2 for 1 for drinks and stuff) to make it more of a go-to spots for the gays but apart from that I only have good things to say about Oasis!

The hotel has recently had some renovations ,very nice. It is very gay friendly which makes LGBT travellers feel at home. Although it is clothing optional, near the pool area I have seldom seen anybody naked there.

Now, the hotel is open to all and is just gay friendly. It’s still a beautiful resort with an AMAZING staff, but it’s distance from the center of San José makes it a rather inconvenient location for anyone wanting to experience the gay nightlife of the city. When it was all gay, it was easier to overlook this, but now one might as well stay at one of the many other gay friendly establishments located within walking distance of downtown.

I enjoyed the staff IMMENSELY and while my room was clean and spotless, the bed was rather hard and the pillows were not very comfortable. If you just want a place to relax, then perhaps Colours is what you’ll like but know that now it is just another nice hotel and is not exclusively for gay men anymore. Also, there isn’t much in the way of restaurants or shopping near by. Cabs or Ubers are required for most trips away from the property

Good hotel for gay travelers in a quiet part of town. Will need to take taxis to the local nightlife but I think better than staying in the centre. My room was large and clean furniture was old fashioned in the style of the hotel it has TV but limited English channels. Free Wifi in the hotel. My room shared a lounge area with another room before exiting to the pool which was nice to sit in. Nice pool and surrounds and nice friendly bar and restaurant.

About 20 minutes walk up the road to some good restaurants’ but some cheaper snack places just around the corner. Also a good local bar 100 meters away. Staff friendly and helpful. Highly recommended for the gay traveller.

This friendly cozy hotel in the nice neighborhood of Rohrmoser is a great place to stay whether you are gay or not. I have been coming here for 8 years and love it. The hotel just switched ownership and the new owners gave the hotel a great facelift. The new restaurant has great food and they hold events at the hotel now. Not all the events are packed but they are just getting started. I highly recommend staying here for anyone gay visiting San Jose.

3. Hotel Presidente 4* – LGBT Friendly Hotels San Jose Costa Rica

Hotel Presidente
Hotel Presidente

Hotel Presidente San Jose City Center is located in the heart of San José and 100 m from Costa Rica’s National Theatre and Plaza de la Cultura. It offers free daily breakfast buffet and free WiFi access. The property boasts unique designed interiors.

Rooms at San Jose City Center Hotel Presidente have modern décor with an LCD flat-screen TV. The amenities available also include a laptop safe and a hairdryer.

Las Americas Restaurant is open just for breakfast, while the Azotea Calle 7 Restaurant is open just for dinners.

Set on the seventh floor, the hotel gym offers impressive views of San José

An iconic landmark in San Jose, Costa Rica, Hotel Presidente is a contemporary urban retreat in the heart of downtown San Jose. With its vibrant ambiance, modern decor and great service, our 4-star upscale hotel is the symbol of hospitality and the cultural soul Costa Rica’s capital city.

Celebrated for our eco-friendly tourism practices, Hotel Presidente is a window into Costa Rica’s land, people and heritage. Experience an unforgettable vacation adventure, romantic getaway or business trip at Hotel Presidente… the place to relax, connect, inspire, dine, and explore Costa Rica!

Take care in San Jose. Use big city behaviors; don’t wear flashy jewelry, carry valuables such as passports (keep a copy on you) ipods/phones are apparently very valuable there so keep them concealed even whilst eating on restaurant patios. Lastly, don’t ever carry valuables in your back pocket. I’m from Washington, DC and have visited various Latin American capitals so San Jose didn’t intimidate me. It is the smallest latin american capital I’ve ever visited and probably has the poorest overall infrastructure.

My female companion and I walked around during the day snapped photos with our digital cameras, etc. Women should utilize caution after dark especially off the pedestrian walkway. Lots of museums, parks, and squares to see near the hotel. Lunch and dinner in restaurant El Patio across the walkway at Hotel Balmoral was to die for, must eat there. Nightlife, including gay, nearby if you are looking to go out, just utilize a taxi afterdark.

The Hotel itself is a mixed bag. Very modern in the entrance and lobby, but then the rooms are totally minimalist. Very basic bathroom, basic bed, and basic tile floors, and then again the water pressure and shower where awesome and the bed was very comfortable, and the floors clean . The best part of my stay though was the restaurant. Food, drinks, and staff wear all great! So there you have it. When downtown though be guarded, Lots of people and possible pick pocketing.

Hotel Presidente is a wonderful hotel centrally located in downtown San Jose. The location is great for exploring the city. The staff couldn’t be more helpful and accommodating. The rooms are spacious and clean. The complimentary breakfast buffet was a fabulous start to the day. Do yourself a favor and stay a few nights before heading out to explore the rest of the country.

Great location on central avenue for all the shops and museums . Very friendly staff. Hotel and amenities a little basic but nice and clean and served our purpose well before heading off on a tour of Costa Rica. Has a small car park too which was useful as we had our rental car delivered to us. Lovely restaurant/bar on top floor with good food and fabulous views. Not much equipment in the gym but good enough for a short stay. Would recommend as a good place to start your visit to this beautiful country.

The hotel is situated near the most vibrant areas of downtown San Jose. Walking down Avenida Central during the day is a treat for the senses with all the activity.

The standard room was spacious, and the bed extremely comfortable. The shower had ample hot water. The complimentary breakfast in the morning was a good way to start the day, and there is a nice array of options to choose from.

We had dinner at the rooftop restaurant – Azotea Calle 7. It really is a lovely restuarant, with superb service.

I would highly recommend Hotel Presidente to anyone considering a few days in San Jose. It is a nice independent hotel, and a refreshing change from the numerous chain hotels that can really be found anywhere.

4. Hotel Santo Tomas 3* – Gay Friendly Hotels San Jose

Hotel Santo Tomas
Hotel Santo Tomas

Set in the traditional Barrio Amon neighbourhood of San Jose, Hotel Santo Tomas offers an outdoor pool and hot tub, surrounded by colourful flowers all year round. Free Wi-Fi and a free breakfast are provided.

Rooms at Santo Tomas Hotel have classic décor, with wooden floors, hanging plants and flowered bedding. All have free Wi-Fi and an LCD TV with cable channels, and some have private balconies.

An authentic Costa Rican breakfast is provided, and includes traditional Gallo Pinto, seasonal fruits, juices, toast and eggs cooked to order. A variety of restaurants can be found within a short walk of the hotel.

Other facilities at the Santo Tomas include a gym, currency exchange and tour desk. Guests can visit the Jade Museum, Gold Museum and National Theatre, all within 4 blocks of the hotel.

A great downtown location in San Jose, Costa Rica. Hotel Santo Tomas provides free hot cooked to order breakfast, FREE Wi-Fi 20 Mbps, security box, swimming pool, hot Jacuzzi, gym, secure on site parking. Only four blocks from San Jose, Central Avenue and an easy stroll to most local attractions. Offering 30 non smoking rooms and has been newly renovated and expanded. Also available 24/7 : tour, travel & car rental services, currency exchange and laundry for our guests. Come and enjoy our wonderful open air gardens, flowers and covered terraces all to enjoy the volcano views here at Hotel Santo Tomas in San Jose, Costa Rica.

Central location. Rooms are nicely furnished and a certain colonial charm. This is the best of this hotel, and quite unique in San Jose. Staff are modest and friendly. Good value for money. We would strongly recommend. There is free and safe parking for the car.

There was lots we appreciated about the hotel including the central location, the pool and garden (even though it felt a bit too chilly to swim) and the staff were generally friendly and helpful. The rooms were clean. It was good to have breakfast onsite and the owner was welcoming and sociable.

Or a hotel simply from its appearance from the street. Hotel Santo Tomas is on a somewhat gritty street on the edge of Barrio Amon and just a block from the central area of San Jose. From the street, you basically see a gate in front of the porch.

Once inside the gate, you’ll find a renovated (and expanded) villa with high ceilings and tile floors everywhere. The courtyard with the pool and Jacuzzi are nice and welcoming. The rooms are large and clean — more quaint than lavish, but they are certainly a good value for the price charged. The staff and owners offer great hospitality. It feels more like a large B&B than a hotel with the chance to chat with the owner at breakfast.

I liked the location. It is within walking distance of the museums and downtown, but we also walked to Barrio Escalante (the foodie district of San Jose) for lunch.

Clean, good breakfasts, swimming pool, excellent gym, interesting architecture. Location a 15 minute walk to Central Avenue, and the area has supermarkets, souvenir shops, the best second-hand bookshop in Central or South America (a one-minute walk) interesting stores. All (in the low season) at around $40 a night. Best of all, a multilingual staff who go out of their way to help.

Hotel Santo Tomas was all that and so much more! It’s really a hidden gem, and that’s because of the amazing kindness and attention of the people who work here. The front desk and breakfast making staff, as well as the housekeeping and everyone else, are always smiling and greeting me with warmth that I appreciated. Any question I had, the front desk staff answered cheerfully -helping me with directions, finding food or an ATM, etc.

There’s an excellent and affordable massage service that was so good that I got two of them. The other guests staying here are also friendly and easy to talk to. The bed is super comfortable, water very hot. I felt “taken care of” during every moment of my stay. The location is really nice – walking distance to everything in downtown (although several locals recommended as a single woman not to walk around this neighborhood at night). This place is great, and I recommend it to anyone who doesn’t want a more sterile chain-hotel experience, more of a local feeling experience, but also wants cleanliness, safety and just a really good feeling of “Pura Vida.” Thank you, Hotel Santo Tomas.

5.  Hotel Gran Hotel Costa Rica, Curio Collection By Hilton 5* – Gay Friendly Hotels San José

Gran Hotel Costa Rica
Gran Hotel Costa Rica

The Gran Hotel Costa Rica is operated by the hotel group Elite Hotels and Resorts of Costa Rica. It is the only hotel in San José declared by the government as a historical and architectural monument. Located in the heart of San José, surrounded by national museums, plazas and walking boulevards, the venue is within walking distance to the main cultural and tourist attractions.

In May 2016 a complete transformation began to revitalize this historical hotel with the latest room designs, sophisticated furnishing, premium services and the most advanced technology. An impressive lobby with a fully modern welcoming experience, as well as an executive lounge, meeting rooms and an innovative concept of a brand restaurant, will all be ready and open by October 2017. The hotel is affiliated through a franchise arrangement with Hilton Worldwide under the brand Hilton Curio Collection.

The hotel is within 5 minutes’ walk of San José Cathedral and the National Theatre. The hotel building has been recognised as a site of architectural interest.

Gran Hotel Costa Rica a Curio Collection by Hilton hotel, is an iconic gem in the heart of San Jose. Located on the Second Avenue and the walking boulevard Avenida Central on his backyard. Our hotel overlooks the National Theatre and is only a few steps from cafés, shops, museums and other tourist attractions. It was built in 1930 and in December 2004 was declared historical-architectural monument of Costa Rica, considering this building reflects an urban testimony of San Jose in the first half of the twentieth century.

Downtown San Jose, lacks of an upscale hotel, so Gran Hotel Costa Rica, will be a very good option for leisure travelers planning to discover the city center and also a must stay for artists within cultural show productions. This hotel is a city icon and it will be the place to stay for tourist looking for the best. Colonial beauty meets modern technology in our stylish 79 guest rooms.

Location is great if you are looking to be centralized to the museums, theaters and gay bars.

This is a beautiful historic hotel right in the heart of downtown. RFK stayed here, and the Presidential suite is named after him. The hotel is very modern and well maintained, with all the amenities. Our room was very modern and comfortable.

The hotel is also in the perfect location for visiting all of the downtown San Jose attractions – the museums, national theatre, and Central Market – which is amazing. There are also several good restaurants within walking distance. The area is very vibrant – lots of young adults out and about – and as a result, very safe.

The staff is also very courteous and attentive. They have a great breakfast buffet, with local and American food, and for Hilton Diamond members, free happy hour.

The rooms are spacious and tastefully decorated. The rooms are quiet and very clean. The entire hotel and rooms have the feel of elegance, charm yet modernly renovated. Outside our room, the furniture used by JFK during his stay there in 1963 was displayed. I have always stayed at Hiltons for business and personal travels in the States and internationally.

By far this hotel has been one of the best, and great value for an elegantly designed and luxuriously furnished hotel in the heart and best location of San Jose, Costa Rica. The location is right next to the Culture Plaza and National Theater, the Gold Museum and Pedestrian Streets. The National and Jade Museums and Central Market are less than 10 min of walk.

Breakfast was included in our package and it was delicious. There was an assortment of cereals, fruit, authentic Costa Rican cuisine and typical Western or American style cuisine. The chefs, Antonio in particular, were extremely friendly and willing to make delicious omelettes, specific Costa Rican breakfasts, fried eggs or anything else we wanted.

The staff at reception and head butler, Hernan, were extremely helpful and helped us navigate our way within the city to go shopping, sight seeing and eating authentic Costa Rican cuisine outside of the hotel. The restaurant and bar staff, Mauricio in particular, were very attentive. Mauricio made extremely delicious juices and amazing cocktails.

As first time travelers to San Jose, we wanted a hotel that was centrally located and that would be safe for us. This hotel fit the bill! It is located in downtown near the National Theater and Gold Museum, within walking distance of the tourist market and many other activities. We felt that this hotel was at the top of our budget, but believed that it was well worth it. The decor was fabulous, a combination of old world floors with modern architecture. We stayed comfortably in this beautiful location.

First, the location of the Gran Hotel Costa Rica is fantastic! It is close to all the museums, the theaters, the Arts and Craft and Central markets and the pedestrian streets. The restaurant and bar are well-appointed with a great view of the National Theater and the hustle and bustle of the Plaza below. If you use your Amex Platinum you get a room upgrade, champagne brunch every morning, free signature cocktails and appetizers for Happy hour. The rooms are comfortable, modern and newly remodeled.

The hotel is well located right in the middle of San Jose and about a 10-minute walk from the National Museum (well worth a visit). There are hundreds of shops and restaurants around, but we experienced absolutely no noise in our room.

The hotel has been recently renovated. The entrance way at ground level is quite small and a bit dark but then you take the lift up to level 5 and you’re in a whole new world. Level 5 is a huge reception/restaurant/bar area with a great view of the city. You could sit there all day enjoying the view as you eat and drink.

When we arrived at the hotel we were shown to the standard room that we had booked. As we were suffering from jet lag we immediately slept for a couple of hours and then went up to level 5 to look around. There Berny (front desk supervisor) asked if we would like a free upgrade to the Presidential Suite at no extra cost. We were amazed – thank you, Berny!

The Presidential Suite is large – a living area, two bedrooms, and two bathrooms. The Presidential Suite was wonderful. We had a platter of fruit waiting for us and all the usual things that you would expect, eg safety deposit box, big-screen TV, bathroom items etc. The TV had mostly channels in Spanish and English but there were also channels in Italian, Portuguese, French, Chinese, German.

The breakfast had a good selection and you could order hotcakes, eggs etc. A big thank-you to Adam here who always greeted us and asked if everything was ok. Remember – breakfast in the restaurant on level 5 is a great experience with a view of the city.

When we booked our room, I chose the Superior Service option which at the time cost only a few dollars extra per night. That was certainly well worth it as it meant that every night at 5-8pm we could go to the restaurant/bar on level 5 and order as much as we could drink for free! They also provided complimentary hors d’oeuvres. As we tended to have big lunches, that was more or less all that we needed to eat in the evening, although we did order some items from the restaurant menu.
