Guide to Gay Friendly Hotels in Skopje North Macedonia

As very traditional Christian Orthodox and Muslim society, North Macedonia is mostly not as much frowned and it is a conservative country especially for gays but in the capital city of Tirana you can find a few gay friendly bars and as well gay friendly hotels Skopje.

Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) persons in North Macedonia may face legal and social challenges not experienced by non-LGBT residents. Both male and female same-sex sexual activity have been legal in North Macedonia since 1996, but same-sex couples and households headed by same-sex couples are not eligible for the same legal protections available to opposite-sex married couples.

Skopje is the capital and largest city of North Macedonia. It is the country’s political, cultural, economic, and academic centre. The territory of Skopje has been inhabited since at least 4000 BC; remains of Neolithic settlements have been found within the old Kale Fortress that overlooks the modern city centre.

There is only a small gay scene in Skopje with some gayfriendly clubs.

1. Hotel Senigallia 4* – Gay Friendly Hotels Skopje

Hotel Senigallia
Hotel Senigallia

Situated in the very city centre of Skopje and with a boat-like design, Hotel Senigallia is a 3-minute walk away from Stone Bridge and from Macedonia Square. Guests can enjoy the on-site bar and 2 open terraces by the river Vardar.

Every room at this hotel is air conditioned and is equipped with a TV with cable channels.

You will find a 24-hour front desk at the property.

Kale Fortress is 600 m from Hotel Senigallia, while the lift for Millennium Cross is 5 km from the property.

4 star cozy hotel located at the bank of River Vardar in the center of the city Skopje. In our 18 rooms we provide excellent accommodation experience.

Apart from the fact it’s a mock pirate ship you are staying in (which is awesome) the hotel was more than this. The staff were all excellent from the guy on the desk, the man taking our breakfast order, evening waitresses, the late night porter who who bought us red wine late on – all fantastic. The rooms are a good size, showers can be quite small if you are large but all in all a superb stay.

Our deluxe room was at the bow of the ship and was very spacious with a king size bed. En suite had a walk in shower. There was a minibar and air con.The bar a restaurant were on the top deck and the prices for food and drink were very reasonable.

Skopje is amazing, like like Disneyland on steroids with all the architecture and hundreds of sculptures.

The room was very grand just like a ship captain’s room. The whole boat or is it a ship was decorated with kitschy ship paintings and captain’s cabin furniture, all added to the illusion. Staff were very friendly and we did get the front desk to order us taxis. Macedonia is relatively cheap and getting around by taxis is the only way to go out from the surrounding city. We took a taxi to the Matka national park and caves, this is a must see.

Breakfast was lovely and the restaurant good for happy hour and dinner. Location is one of the best things about this hotel, the other is that it is as kinky to stay in a concrete boat as it is to visit Skopje.

As a city, Skopje is a vanity project, architectural confection that delights and infuriates its citizens and sometimes its visitors. Right at its heart is an entirely incongruous square rigged galleon, anchored in concrete, in the dissecting Vardar River. The galleon is a specialist 18 room boutique hotel. Forget about staying in a conventional hotel if you are visiting Skopje. Senigallia is a gem and superbly located.

It is just yards from the bustling pedestrianised Macedonia Square, the towering Alexander the Great Statue, the Stone Bridge, and the Old Bazar. Strolling home through the café lined streets to the Senigallia at night was one of the delights of our visit. On the riverbank itself there are bars (including an Irish bar), restaurants, cafes, and book stalls.

Rooms/Cabins on the Senigallia are spacious, atmospheric, and beautifully wood panelled. Beds are ultra comfortable.Bathrooms are generous sized and elegant. We were fortunate to be able to get a river view room on our first visit and a magnificent poop deck mini suite on our second. All have multi-channel TVs, Wi-Fi and air.con. Rates ranged from €80 to €95 euro (excellent full breakfast included). For the location, the charm and the service on board the Senigallia this was pretty good value.

At breakfast time space on the dining room deck can sometimes be limited but the view is panoramic. The buffet is excellent.

Plunge into the indoor pool, soak in the soothing whirlpool, or simply relax in the Spa. A city steeped in history, don’t miss some of the wonderful sights including Stone Bridge, Skopje Art Bridge, Macedonia square.

Nice hotel, but away from the city center. The spa was really nice, much better than you will expect! Everything is new and clean. The bar, food and breakfast was OK, but nothing special. Smoking is allowed in the rooftop bar on the same floor as many rooms. If you are staying at the top (fifth floor), you must expect some smell of cigarette smoke, when you are entering your room.

Brand new Hotel, quality build, with luxury that you can see and feel around you.

Check-in and check out nice and easy, with pleasant staff there to assist at all times. Concierge services also available as well.

Room generously spacious, with a comfortable super-king (California king size) bed, quality furnishings, waterfall walk in shower, giant bathroom facilities, and all the in-room amenities that you may need, including minibar.

Breakfast was stunning! Plenty of choice and plenty of variety on the buffet. I could write a lengthy piece just on the breakfast food choices itself. Full espresso machine available, 3 chefs on duty, with a live cooking station, and made-from-scratch eggs Benedict to order, which I gladly had for the 10 day I was there.

Housekeeping was outstanding for the most part, they did miss few things here and there on some of the days, but nothing that can spoil my stay.

Spa & Gym facilities….. just marvellous! Gym spacious, and fully equipped with cardio and weights and a helpful gent always there to assist (I think it might have been the gym manager) The spa was brilliant, with a steam and sauna, beautiful heated pool, and heated lounge beds to rest and relax. These facilities alone, would be worth your stay, if anything else. Had a 30 min back massage, which I highly recommend. The overall experience in this part of the hotel, might as well have been the Four Seasons.

Fantastic running track along the river, just adjacent to the hotel.

Now, for those that have not been to Skopje, the location of the hotel might seem a tad odd, as it’s not in the city centre, but in my opinion, is for the better. If you need to be in the centre, ask the concierge to get you a taxi, and for less then £4 you will be there.

Overall a fantastic hotel, and whenever I needed few things to be sorted, Kristina and Zahir where there to assist immediately.

Not sure why it is a Doubletree brand, as it can easily carry the full deluxe Hilton or Conrad brand.

The location of the hotel is in a modern part of the city, closer to the airport than most, but a 10 minute taxi ride away from the centre of the city.

It has all of the amenities you’d expect from a Hilton, and I think a few extra, such as free parking.

Large comfortable beds and showers, helpful friendly staff, and there is an ATM on site, which is also useful.

I arrived quite late in Skopje, and ate at the hotel restaurant, which I found to be decently priced and enjoyable.

The hotel is on the outskirts of Skopje at the riverside overlooking the banks of the river and surrounding suburban houses.

The view on the picture is from my room above the main entrance to the very nice water fountain in front of the hotel and a small church across the street.

Rooms are big with nice and modern interior and bathrooms are bright nice and clean.

Beds are comfortable and big, all very cozy. Meals are very tasty and delicious. On the rooftop there is a bar which has a nice view on the surroundings but the drinks are overpriced.

The location is the best – very close to the central square and major attractions in Skopje. It is clean and organized.

The staff was very friendly and helpful, they really went extra mile for me. Especially the front desk.

I definitely recommend this Ibis to others and would stay here again. Great value for your money.

The location is also great, just 2 min from Square Macedonia and yet it was so quiet and private for peaceful night sleep.

The breakfast is rich with Macedonian food as ajvar and omelet with peppers, cheese, different kinds of ham, delicious jams etc.

Location perfect. Staff wonderful. Beds totally blissful. Staffed 24/7 for drinks and snacks. Nothing too much trouble. Skopje is such great place to visit and we’d be back in a heartbeat, and we’d stay at the Ibis in the centre! Lovely breakfast and charming people on duty to make sure you have everything you need.
I have one small small thing to add. I wish I’d take my travel kettle as there are no amenities in the rooms to make a drink. However, drinks were available in the lounge area and were very reasonable to.

The hotel is standard Ibis quality and setup, similar to the newer hotels in this chain. The location is great and just a five minute walk right to the centre square, there is a handy supermarket nearby too in the opposite direction.

Breakfast was great, a good selection of hot and cold food with regular replenishment by the staff.

The hotel is just 1 short block from the main square and walkable to everywhere. I think it’s slightly larger than other Ibis rooms I’ve stayed in and the shower in the bathroom was unusually big for an Ibis. The staff were very friendly and even printed off the bus schedule for me to where I was going. The breakfast is the standard, basic Ibis breakfast but perfectly fine for starting ones day. It’s a very nice, clean hotel with friendly, helpful staff in a great location.

If I come through here again I’ll definitely be staying here again.

The hotel is right in the centre of the city. There is limited parking outside and we were able to temporarily park the car to unload our stuff. Check in was quick and the member of staff was very friendly. He also gave us two options to park the car; the nearby Marriott Hotel’s underground car park, or another one that was just around the corner.

We were given a room on the fifth floor and took one of the two lifts there. The one lift is a bit on the small side. The room was the usual Ibis standard; we had two single twin beds, beside cabinets, flatscreen tv with about 30 channels mostly showing sports. There was also a clothes hanging area, plus a bench along by the window and a full length mirror.

The beds were comfy although the mattresses did move a little bit while we slept. We couldn’t hear any noise from outside or inside so slept well.

The bathroom was actually larger than I thought after a first look. There was a spacious shower diagonally in the room, with a sink and toilet. The towels were all clean and fresh and it would have been useful if we’d had at least one hand towel.

Breakfast was good; there was a good choice of cold meats and cheeses, croissants, pastries, jam, butter, bread etc. Cereals, fruit and yogurt, as well as hot food such as omelette, scrambled egg and sausages. The waitress was really polite and helpful.

The WiFi was good, with good range and speed. I enjoyed the stay at this hotel however my friend did not enjoy it as much due to the lack of a hand towel.
