Lesbiangaybisexual and transgender (LGBT) rights in the United States have evolved in recent decades. However, LGBT Americans may still face some legal and many social challenges not experienced by non-LGBT residents, particularly in states with large conservative populations, such as in the Deep South; in rural areas; and in some Native American tribal nations.

U.S. federal law does not explicitly include protections against discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity. In June 2020, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that sexual orientation and gender identity are included under “sex” as a prohibited ground of employment discrimination in the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

Illinois is seen as one of the most progressive states in the United States in regard to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) rights and often viewed as one of the most liberal states in the Midwestern United States.

When we drove up to the State House Inn, a dull and drab exterior that could be Don Draper’s office building, we sighed with disappointment. Once inside, the well appointed, stylish rooms, the comfortable beds and the impeccable service made us glad we came here! It’s right next to, you guessed it, the statehouse, not the hippest part of town.
Springfield was disappointingly sleepy. I visited the capitol building on a Sunday and I swear I was just about the only person in the building. On Monday. activity in the neighborhood didn’t pick up much. The town’s best gay bar is a short walk away and for cheap, strong drinks it can’t be beat.
We stayed here for Springfield Gay Pride and stayed two nights. I must admit the 60s decor restored is impressive (I was a kid in the 60s and remember this the first time around!) but the rooms were small, they have either one or two double beds (we were 3 adults) and the beds are Danish modern style so like the 60s with wood frames on the outside which ALWAYS hit you getting in or out. This is cute, nostalgic and as uncomfortable as you-know-what. Also, they have no rooms for multiple people REALLY as the double beds are too small for two to share and no rollaways or pull-out sofas etc.
As far as the highs, the VERY Best buffet all you want breakfast we have had ANYWHERE is included, and that includes waffles, fresh scrambled eggs, bagels, muffins and bacon (crispy!) as well as sausage which obviously were made at the hotel, not brought in in some box! They also have a REAL high speed WiFi as we clocked over 20 Megs of download. Are all you big chains listening? 20 MEGS…compare to the paltry less than 1 Meg we usually get places this was an iPad’s dream. Parking, internet and all the usual “extras” were included, so the place was a GREAT deal and staff were wonderful.
Very pleasing place to stay. Room was comfortable with all amenities provided. Very clean and beds were comfortable. Abe’s picture over one of the beds was a little scary when you wake up during the night, but it is Springfield. Nice view of the Capitol building and grounds. Breakfast buffet had standard offerings but was hot and tasty. Staff was courteous and personable. Would definitely stay here again and would highly recommend it to others.

The nice thing that we have experienced on this trip is the consistency of quality that the Country Inn has brought forward to the hotel industry. Our experience has been that the staff are consistently friendly, the rooms are spacious, clean, and smell good…and the breakfast is great. The only thing that we would warn about this property is that the gas bar located right beside this hotel provides ample noise. Fortunately, as the night progresses it does quiet down somewhat. Aside from the noise issue we had a perfect stay – and the noise issue we realize is not something the hotel can do much about.

The hotel location is very convenient to to East side of Springfield with a big gas station/Convenience store adjacent and a Bob Evan’s next to that. The building is new and the rooms are average size. The beds were comfortable and the room clean. I have never seen such a small shampoo bottle – enough for 1 person. No extra toilet paper and what was there was almost empty.

The pool was clean, good temp and typical small size, but big enough to keep a bunch of kids happy. The staff were were friendly and helpful.

The breakfast was the smallest I have seen at any CI or other family hotel. The only hot items were oatmeal and scrambled eggs, no meat, potato or other. There were a few pieces of bread wrapped in cellophane, one type of cereal, and very little else. They had waffle makers you could use. No fruit. One of the advantages of staying at a CI is saving the cost of bfast. We went to McDonalds.

We stayed at this hotel on an overnight getaway to visit the Lincoln Museum. We had a king bed mini-suite with a pull out sofa. The room was comfortable and clean. Check in was easy and the attendant was very friendly. He gave us a great recommendation for dinner.
Breakfast was included and was great. Make your own waffles, pastries, breads, oatmeal with fixings, yogurt, cereal and hot foods (sausage gravy and biscuits, eggs, potatoes). The lady working breakfast was very attentive and kept everything stocked and clean. There was also a convenience store/gas station and Bob Evans in the parking lot.

What you will find is fresh decor that while elegant is still relaxing, award-winning homemade food, and service that is intuitive and personalized yet unobtrusive and laid back.
We believe that just because we provide a beautiful place to stay doesn’t mean we have to be hoity toity. Aldrich Guest House is also the first and only cannabis friendly bed and breakfast in Illinois! We have built a separate ‘tiny house’ for guests to consume in while they’re here making sure that everyone can enjoy their stay in whatever way they want while still respecting each other. You deserve a break – come relax at Aldrich Guest House! Robert and Douglas, Innkeepers/Owners.
We had a wonderful time at the Aldrich Guest House and Robert and Douglas were impeccable hosts. The home is spotless and furnishings are well done and of very good quality. They are helpful and informative hosts and leave no detail unattended. Our breakfasts were delicious and presentation delightful. Very conveniently located, ample parking, and easy access when coming and going. Will be our go to location on our return trips to Galena.

Robert and Douglas have worked hard to make Aldrich Guest House a boutique hotel in a historic setting. They are warm and cordial hosts. They are passionate about the history of the house and are terrific stewards of the property.

They clearly both have backgrounds in hospitality and nail all the details beautifully. Breakfasts were tasty and nicely presented.

The Saturday evening cocktail gathering was a wonderful touch for allowing all guests to gather and meet each other. The large double parlor allowed us to be well spaced out so we all felt very comfortable.

Our room was immaculate (as was the entire property) and the bed very comfortable.

If we find ourselves back in Galena, we’d certainly stay again.

The home itself was beautiful. Care that was taken to decorate the room to meet the historical significance as well as adding some modern updates to make our stay enjoyable. We felt like one of the famous historical figures that stayed in the home throughout its history. Our room was beautifully designed and extremely comfortable.

When we woke, Douglas and Robert treated us to some of the most wonderful breakfasts. Douglas and Robert had excellent suggestions to help with our choices for our walks and views to photograph. We went during the autumn changing of the color and it was spectacular. They also helped with suggesting meal locations and we were able to catch a beautiful sunset during dinner due to one of these suggestions.

This was our second stay at the Aldrich Guest House and already booked another long weekend there. We have stayed at bed & breakfasts all over the world and this is one of our favorites. The minute you walk into the house, an incredible sense of tranquility surrounds you. Douglas and Robert are charismatic, hospitable, professional, and thoughtful. We truly enjoyed talking with them and learning about the historical past of the Aldrich House, as well as many other architectural gems throughout Galena. Robert and Douglas are passionate about preserving the history of the Aldrich house, while elevating the bed & breakfast experience, and that enthusiasm and commitment is shown in their attentiveness to every small detail throughout the home.

Many of the bed and breakfasts we have stayed at have provided information about things to do in the area, restaurants, etc., but Robert and Douglas take this to a whole new level by collaborating with businesses in Galena to ensure their guests have an unforgettable getaway experience. After watching videos they posted to social media, we signed up for a few workshops offered by local businesses. We were running late for one of the workshops and when we arrived and apologized for being a few minutes late, the shop owner was incredibly gracious and said, “No worries, Robert called us to let us know you would be here shortly.” Robert’s thoughtfulness in making that 1 minute call was very meaningful to us because it immediately took away the stress we were feeling from running late and allowed us to relax and have an amazing time. (As a side note, we highly recommend the Scent Workshop and Coffee Cupping experiences!)

With their combined 45+ years of experience in the industry, Robert and Douglas have truly have mastered the art of what every bed & breakfast experience should be. I would imagine most people plan a trip to Galena and then research accommodations in the area. For this getaway, we did the opposite — we made sure the Aldrich House was available and booked our room, and then planned the rest of our Galena trip. I truly believe it speaks volumes when our destination was the Aldrich House and everything else Galena has to offer was a bonus. We are already looking forward to our return trip in a few months.
