Norway, like the other Scandinavian countries, is very progressive in regards to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) rights. In 1981, Norway became one of the first countries in the world to enact an anti-discrimination law explicitly including sexual orientationSame-sex marriage, adoption, and assisted insemination treatments for lesbian couples have been legal since 2009. In 2016, Norway became the fourth country in Europe to pass a law allowing the change of legal gender for transgender people solely based on self-determination.

Much like the other Nordic countries, Norway is frequently referred to as one of the world’s most LGBT-friendly nations, with high societal acceptance and tolerance of LGBT people.

Tromsø, a city in northern Norway, is a major cultural hub above the Arctic Circle. It’s famed as a viewing point for colorful Northern Lights that sometime light up the nighttime sky. The city’s historic center, on the island of Tromsø, is distinguished by its centuries-old wooden houses. The 1965 Arctic Cathedral, with its distinctive peaked roof and soaring stained-glass windows, dominates the skyline.

Very nice hotel with all the necessary facilities. Rooms are completely renovated; everything was very clean and organized. View from our room was spectacular.

Breakfast is a ‘must’; really good.

Great staff and if you’re looking for a gay friendly place, this is it.

The journey to the Hotel
Its around 15 minutes journey form the airport and costs just 120NK for the both of you into the town with the airport Bus ( £3,03 per person) and around 5 stops to the hotel.

The Hotel
We arrived around 9pm and checked into 755 which had the sea and mountain view but be warned, you can also see the rooms opposite and you can see them and they can see you. Our room only had a blind but no nets. We didn’t like putting the blind down because it spoils the stunning views.

The Room – 755
The room is ok in size and we were in a standard room ( beware the step into the bathroom ) and had one day of complimentary water then nothing after this.

Above us ( we were on the 7th floor) and the gym was on the 10th floor and you could hear people running on the treadmill which surprised us.

You need to catch another lift to this room which wasn’t called the gym but something like chill out room.

In all, the room was fairly quiet during the night period and you could look out the window ( dressed) and watch the snow falling.

The shower and bath were combined and basic essentials in the bathroom ( no toothbrush or paste though)

The Gym – located 10th floor
The gym was small but compact – One treadmill, one bike etc but has the most stunning views but also you can see into people’s rooms again from here. We ran and watched someone having a good night’s sleep in there room lol.

The balcony is amazing, you can take a few pictures from here while your partner jogs away with their headset on.

There was a sauna in the mens and ladies changing rooms with another amazing view but you couldn’t go in together ( seperate for man and woman)

The Restaurant for dinner ( closed Sundays )
Sells very basic menu but enough for a couple of nights without getting board. Burger, etc. It was a nice setting but nothing amazing.

The Breakfast restaurant ( served in the main restaurant again )
It was enough if you have got used to the Scandinavian type breakfasts …Salmon etc and you could have A LA CARTE which was omelettes of different types plus veg option.
So to be honest, only one restaurant in the hotel which does get busy in the morning.

The Reception
They put water and welcome cookies and sweets outs, I fear these get gobbled quickly with the people who come in to go on the trips that are available from the reception.

The Tours
Tromso safari work from this hotel and lots of people queue here in the reception waiting for the trips in the evening and morning so beware when entering the building.
Great tours though, we booked to direct from here.

We did the Northern Lights tour and the reindeer feed, both were very successful too.

The Hotel is local..
It is right next to the sea front, a quick walk over the road and has LOVELY PUB AND PIZZA place on the doorstep ( go to both and enjoy)

You can travel from here in 15 minutes to the cable car on bus 26 which stops a little bit down the road from the cable car. Be warned it’s quite a steep walk up the snowy road to the cable car but worth it.
You are so close to everything here and the hotel is ideal for trips and using as a base.

The staff
Always helpful, friendly and polite. Nothing was too stressful for them.

Would we stay again here…..
Yes probably we would. It is easy to get to and is the gateway to everything really.

Thank you Radisson and the most beautiful Tromso town for letting us stay in such a wonderful setting.

Rooms are compact and there’s not any storage space, but beds are comfortable and there’s everything you’d need. The best thing about this hotel is the generous buffet breakfast, which offers everything from raw broccoli and cauliflower to eggs in numerous forms, with cheeses, different types of salmon and other fish, the most delicious breads, waffles, yogurts, fruit, muesli, pastries, …well, you get the picture!

And the staff are super. Location is great because it’s very central and easy to walk around the city centre.

The hotel is located in a good central location, near to main pedestrian area and local restaurants. The breakfast spread was very good and the room was clean and tidy. The bed was comfortable and would stay here again.

y. The room are not very big, you don’t have a lot of space around the bed but enough to live well. The bed are very good and I found dead them to be comfortable. The room has a little desk but few wardrobe to put your clothes in. The bathroom was bigger than expected and clearly enough for the use it had.

Breakfast was fine, everyone can find something he likes, from the delicious salmon, bread, eggs, cereals, cheese and the list goes on and on. Try the spicy sausages, it felt strange to me as I didn’t expect that but I took some each morning.

Nice and new hotel, modern, good central location, excellent breakfast, excellent free Nespresso coffee machine on the lobby , nice bed, only one thing negative: tiny room, no place to leave the stuff on the mini-wardrobe, no could open the suitcase comfortably and leave it open.

Lovely hotel and rooms, central location, friendly staff, free wifi, excellent breakfast. The hotel is within walking distance of all attractions with many shops and restaurants nearby. I would have no hesitation staying here again on my next visit.

3. Scandic Ishavshotel 4* – Gay Friendly Hotels Tromso

Scandic Ishavshotel
Scandic Ishavshotel

On a picturesque waterside location in Tromsø, which is often referred to as the Paris of the North, is Scandic Ishavshotel, offering stunning views of the harbour and city.

Almost all rooms at the Scandic Ishavshotel are located at the very end of the quay and provide panoramic views of the surroundings.

The Lobby Restaurant, along with Restaurant Roast cater for all guest’s food needs, with delicious, traditional Norwegian cuisine.

For refreshing drinks and night time socializing, visit the Roast Bar, located right by the water and offering views of the Tromsø Bridge and a famous architectural landmark, the Arctic Cathedral.

Set in an airy, quayside building overlooking Tromsø harbor, this sleek hotel is an 8-minute walk from the Polar Museum, 3 km from the striking Arctic Cathedral and 6 km from Tromsø Langnes Airport .

Modern rooms have flat-screen TVs, sitting areas and en suite bathrooms, plus free Wi-Fi. Upgraded rooms and suites offer harbor views, tea and coffee making facilities, and/or separate living areas. Some suites add dining tables. Room service is available.

A free breakfast buffet is served in the stylish, airy restaurant. There’s also a bar, plus meeting facilities.

Scandic Ishavshotel has a unique location on the quay in the centre of Tromso. It is easy to get to as the bus station is close by and the airport is just 5 km away. Our rooms are of a high international standard and for conferences and events we have rooms in all sizes for 2 – 450 participants. Our restaurant offers a contemporary a la carte menu consisting only of the freshest seafood, fish and local meats all prepared in an original Josper grill featured in our open kitchen. Free WiFi is available in the rooms and public areas.

Ishavs hotel has a perfect location at the harbour and you have a wonderful view to the Tromsø Bridge, the mountains and the ships coming in. I had a room with big windows where I could see the coastal liner coming and leaving, just before the entrance. The buss-terminal is a small walk away, and you will find wonderful restaurants and museums within walking distance. You will easily find the hotel from all directions.

The location is perfect because all kinds of busses stop right in front or very close to the hotel (airport express, local busses and busses going to other places in the Troms region). The breakfast buffet offers a huge variety and the rooms are clean, equipped with modern interior and spacious enough for two.

The location of this Scandic hotel is outstanding – walking distance from the ferry terminal and with views of the water and city. Comfortable, albeit small rooms, but very clean and well designed. We got the family room which was perfect for our one night stay. The breakfast buffet is excellent. Very good value for money – I recommend this hotel.

LOCATIONPerfect location in the harbour within easy walking distance of everything and next the main meeting point for most tours. It is also one of the stops for the Flybussen Airport Express bus.

FOOD: We tried the breakfast buffet, evening buffet, bar food and Roast restaurant and all were excellent. You have to dine at Roast at least one evening if you get the chance as it was delicious with excellent atmosphere. The evening buffet was nice food (hot and cold) with different selections each day and timings to suit evening tours (i.e. started serving from 4pm).

ROOM: Our room was clean, tidy and modern with amazing views of the harbour and Arctic Cathedral. The beds were comfy, although we only had one pillow each. The shower was warm and powerful, and the bathroom had a heated floor. The curtains did an excellent job of blocking out the sunlight.

SERVICE: The catering and waiting staff were excellent. The front desk staff were okay but compared to their food and beverage colleagues, they let the side down.

SUMMARY: I would definitely stay in Scandic Ishavshotel again and highly recommend it to everyone. We are so glad that we chose this hotel over the others. The reason for dropping one star is that the front desk staff really could do better.

When you think of Tromso you will think of this hotel as it’s design is very unique, is location is excellent, and the views are stunning.
