Located at the City Gates of Valletta, Malta’s capital city and UNESCO heritage city, The Phoenicia Malta is perfectly placed for discovering the historic walled city, feasting on Caravaggio’s paintings and exploring the magnificent harbours. The hotel also boast magnificent 7 acre landscaped gardens.
The island’s central bus terminus is just meters away giving the possibility to explore the whole island by bus. A stay at The Phoenicia Malta is an unforgettable experience. Our charming staff will ensure your every whim is catered for.
The Phoenicia really is a beautiful hotel and was the perfect choice for a relaxing stay over my birthday weekend.
The 4th floor room was cosy but colonially cute, spotlessly clean and very comfortable.
A glance to the right and the iconic Triton fountain was in full flow looking resplendent and to the left incredible views of the bastions and out over Marsamxett Harbour.
The tiny balcony which looked slanted was quite hair-raising to go out on so a night vista was enjoyed from within the room and the curtains remained open.
The hotel itself is impressive with an amazing entrance and lobby. The gardens are beautiful and the pool area was second to none with great views of the harbour. You can enjoy a dip in the infinity pool or relax on the comfy sun beds – and the pool staff are there to support you with whatever you need.
Location wise, the hotel is right next to the Valletta city gate so you are near everything you could want. This means you can enjoy the bustle of the city but return to the sanctuary of the hotel to relax.
A lovely hotel, stylishly refurbished. Very conveniently located just outside the city gates of Valletta, you can walk into and around the town with ease. The rooms are very comfortable, ours had a balcony for two and a big bathroom with a window. The staff in this hotel are a delight, nothing is too much trouble from giving recommendations on places to visit and how to get there, to simply booking a taxi. They actually booked the hotel limousine for us, which was a thoughtful surprise at the end of our stay.
Breakfast buffet is generous – fruit, pasties, cheeses, cold meats as well as a cooked breakfast. Dinner is of an excellent standard. We had fish, the sea bass was not available but the chef did a special for us with a different fish. The cafe attached to the hotel also serves food of a high standard. A reception invitation by the hotel management in the middle of our stay, held in the beautiful Palm Court, was a very nice touch.
Pool Area:
It was quite a busy day at the pool but the staff assured us that for hotel guests the first row of sunbeds and last row were reserved for hotel guests, so we were soon allocated sunbeds in the front row with white fluffy towels and wow what a view onto the harbour with the infinity pool in front. Cocktails flowed as the staff offered a waiter service to your sunbed. No smoking allowed at poolside which was great, but there was a gazebo smoking area in the gardens above the pool area. Public toilets were very spacious and clean.
The Room:
I would have to say that whilst the rooms a beautifully and elegantly decorated, they are still quite small for 2 people. However, cleanliness is at the top of the list, as well as receiving a protection kit in the rooms (mask and wipe) as it is mandatory to wear masks in all open spaces. We called down for a hairdryer and they were only too happy to oblige.
Dinner:
Dinner was also included in the package and this was served in the Cafe Phoenicia. The Cafe Phoenicia has a real 1920’s vibe and decor even on the outside terrace. The food unfortunately did not hit the mark at all. Starters were fine (octopus and pigs cheeks croquettes) but mains let them down substantially., The Risotto was super salty to the point that half of it could not be eaten and the Farfalle pasta dish with ham hock looked like it was created for a kiddies party rather than the fine dining experience we expected.
Down to the plates the food was served on, it looked like plastic plates you might find at a BBQ party or a kiddies party – again not the fine white china we would have expected given the decor. For dessert we took the Phoenicia chocolate cake and boy was it delicious, decadent, luxurious, tasty – just wow! That made up for the poor mains and actually the restaurant offered to make good on the bad mains (another example of the excellent customer service at the Phoenicia).
Breakfast:
Breakfast was the final meal we had included in our stay and there was a choice of hot, cold and bakery items as well as a selection of teas and coffees, all served in yet another restaurant, the Palm Court which is accessed through the most beautiful lounge area where you could also order afternoon tea and soak up the elegance and style the Phoenicia has to offer.
All in all we had a wonderful stay with the décor and the people having made the greatest impact on us. Yes, we would definitely recommend a stay here or if nothing else, at least a Pool day with good food and cocktails.

2. Rosselli Valletta Hotel 5* – Gay Friendly Hotels Malta

Rosselli offers accommodation in the heart of Valletta. Set in a 17th-century building formerly owned by a member of the Knights of Malta, the hotel combines Baroque architecture and modern facilities, including free WiFi throughout. A restaurant and a bar are also available on site.
All air conditioned, units at Rosselli feature a flat-screen TV and a private bathroom equipped with free toiletries and a hairdryer.
A continental breakfast with a selection of sweet and savoury products, as well as fresh fruit is available daily, while the Michelin-starred restaurant boasts a sophisticated menu and dessert selection.
The hotel in itself is a Jewel in the Heart of the Capital City in all aspects i.e, beautiful architecture, interior design and decor, luxury & elegance of the accommodation rooms, excellent service, attention to detail, divine food and impeccable service at their restaurant Grain…..in other words we felt like Royalty and it was a fantastic weekend to remember!
Upon arrival we were welcomed by a very friendly and polite butler. Check in was extremely quick and efficient and in a matter of no time, we were escorted to our beautiful Suite. Our room was a Duplex, beautifully furnished, and impeccably clean.
The design and decor of this hotel are truly amazing. There is a lovely rooftop pool and deck area with picturesque views of the harbour. Breakfast was very good and we were also offered a Breakfast menu.
The first day we chose a Vegetarian b’fast and the second day we chose Full English b’fast. Both were delicious. The hotel has its own restaurant called GRAIN where we dined on both evenings. The food was delicious and definitely not to be missed. Being located in the centre of the capital city of Valletta, all places of cultural and historic interest are within walking distance. All staff are extremely courteous, polite and helpful. It is evident that the guest’s wellbeing is their priority.
The room was spacious and on two floors separated by a spiral staircase, with the sleeping area upstairs. Two flat screen TVs, air conditioning on both floors, safety deposit box and tea and coffee making facilities. We received some L’Occitane gifts as well on each night of our stay which was a pleasant surprise and probably only because we were upgraded to the Junior Suite. This is the main brand of toiletries in the room.
Staff here are polite, courteous and went out of their way to help with every request.
The breakfast area is small and seats approx 20 people with waiter service. There’s a selection of continental and fully cooked breakfast which is ordered by menu and you can tailor it to your choice. There is a self-serve counter area as well.
The hotel is located approx 4 miles from the airport and the taxi costs 17 euros to Valletta. It is located centrally and sights, restaurants and bars are all within a short walk. The Valletta gate, St Johns Cathedral and the Barrakka Gardens are all within 10-15 mins walk.
We also took a ride up to St Julian’s which is more typical of a tourist area and very busy with bars and restaurants and many many shops. This is a TD13 bus ride from Valletta bus station A15 stand and costs 3 euros pp. try and avoid picking up taxis in the street as the prices are extortionate.
Overall an exceptional hotel in terms of service, cleanliness and friendly staff and thoroughly worth treating yourself to this five star hotel.
From the check in until very last moment spent at the hotel we’ve received amazing service. Being accommodated in different 5* hotels all over the world, so far Rosselli was one of the best hotel we have stayed at.
The superior room, Alusietta, was just perfect size for us. Two Maltese balconies, attached to the room, made memorable experience especially in the morning when the sun came inside the room. Original design of the room was highly appreciated as we could see that the detailed touches were given when planning of the concept of the hotel.
Continental breakfast served on 3tier plate holder was very nice surprise as it contained all food items we usually choose for the morning meal. Opportunity of ordering egg dish was also highly appreciated. All food and drinks were professionally served.
Frankly saying, what we have enjoyed most was genuine service of all team members we have met at the hotel. Very professional, polite, friendly and able to fulfill our requests.

3. La Falconeria Hotel 4* – Gay Friendly Hotels Valletta

Offering a fitness centre and a bar, La Falconeria Hotel is set in Valletta. WiFi is free throughout.
Each elegantly decorated room at this hotel is air conditioned and comes with a flat-screen TV. Some rooms have views of the city. Rooms include a private bathroom. For your comfort, you will find bathrobes, slippers and free toiletries.
You can start the day with an à la carte breakfast, which provides a selection of sweet and savoury products, served hot and cold, as well as fresh fruit, hot drinks, and fruit juice.
Situated in the heart of the glorious capital of Malta, La Falconeria offers its guests the chance to truly experience Valletta´s unique charm and character whilst surrounded by history. Valletta’s Baroque architectural style perfectly compliments La Falconeria’s fine and detailed premises, reminiscent of the Rococo style, allowing you to blend in and become one with the city.
There are two sides to this hotel. The front half of the building is hundreds of years old; walking through the entrance, one is transported from the present back to the time of the renaissance nobility, with marble flooring and artistic finishes. The latter half was destroyed in WWII, and was rebuilt in a modern style while in symmetry to the rest of the city. An outdoor courtyard is central to this hotel, providing a tranquil oasis in the open air under the warm Mediterranean sun. These two sides of the hotel along with the modern facilities and luxuries complement the historic feel and live up to the city´s best description: “a city built by gentlemen for gentlemen”.
The hotel itself couldn’t be in a better location, it’s walking distance to everything in Valletta and very close to the Sliema ferry stop too. The street can get a bit quiet at night but never felt unsafe, there is an embassy right in front of the hotel so there were security guards all the time.
Absolutely delighted to have booked this hotel! It is a real gem in the heart of Valletta, situated in a great location – walking distance to all local amenities and some great historical sites.
This was our second visit to Valletta and La Falconeria was a perfect choice; a stylish hotel with lovely modern clean/spotless rooms including a balcony and a great view of the cathedral.
The service is excellent, professional, warm, friendly and helpful staff who go above and beyond to assist and ensure an ease of stay. Nothing is too much bother.
The hotel staff are friendly and helpful. We went back multiple times for help with restaurant reservations, they were always patient and provided service with a smile. We love the in room tea/coffee set up with drinkable water included. It provides a nice break in the day. The breakfast service is also fantastic. The à la carte menu caters to a variety of different taste buds. (Try to porridge, for someone who usually prefers an English breakfast, it was a surprisingly delicious treat!). You can even request breakfast in your room for 5 Euro, which is a bargain given room service charges in hotels are usually ridiculously expensive.
The other things that stands out with the hotel is that they still provide single usage bath amenities (something that a lot of hotels cut out recently), which ensure hygiene. Moreover, they picked products with less plastic packaging so it’s more environmentally friendly.

Well furnished room with everything you could want eg bathrobes, slippers, toiletries, kettle, great choice of teas & coffee plus a coffee machine, to name but a few. We were half board and the food was excellent. Varied menu change daily, self service except meat in evenings, always hit and freshly cooked with good starters and dessert. Low priced drinks too. Fantastic restaurant service from a group of 4 staff including Bridgette and Noel, who could never do enough for guests. Reception staff were friendly, efficient, informative and charming.
The staff were what makes this delightful city centre hotel so good. Everyone was helpful and friendly both before and during our stay.
It is in a quiet and pleasant location not far from the main attractions. We were fortunate in having a suite, which was really like large room with balcony but none the less good.
Lovely marble shower room (no bath) and good quality linen and towels.
We had half board which was excellent value. and ‘home’ cooked and tasty. the food was served as a buffet with a good choice each evening. There is a charming bar area for drinks.
. It is a great location, near to all Valletta’s attractions and five minutes from the bus station. We had a room on the 4th floor which was roomy with a good sea view, full sized bathroom and tea/coffee making facilities. The bed was huge and very comfortable.
We found the hotel quiet at night with no disturbance. Everywhere was very clean and the restaurant and bar were both very pleasant. The staff were friendly and helpful – Michael the barman is worth a special mention. The breakfast was a buffet with plenty of choice. We stayed for dinner on one night – again a buffet with good choices and good value at €15. Overall our stay was very good and the hotel was excellent value for money.
The room was spacious, lovely big comfortable bed with decent pillows, air con which also heats and is quiet. Good quiet fridge, tea and coffee with a kettle and a coffee machine which we didn’t use. Lovely pool area with good quality sun loungers, chairs and tables. Nice dining room with a nice buffet breakfast 🍳 really nice bread 🥖.
Excellent position if you turn out of the hotel to the left and walk along a fairly flat road you come to uppebarrakkaka gardens with a lift down to the waterfront, free going down, €1 coming up. Or before that turn right on Republic street to the main gate and the bus terminal, €1.50 anywhere. Turn right out of the hotel, immediately left and up the road a bit there’s a small mini mart which sells water, beer, fruit etc but only open in the morning. Wouldn’t hesitate staying here again. Oh and lovely, friendly staff.

Set in a 19th-century building, Casa Ellul is located in Valletta, on the island of Malta. It features unique-style accommodation decorated with original Maltese floor tiles. Free WiFi is available throughout.

Apart from being located in Malta’s capital city, Valletta, it is situated on a very quiet street which made it perfect for a nice getaway. The staff greeted us with a warm welcome and they made sure that we had a great and pleasant experience throughout our stay. In fact we did!
Suite 6: just wow! This duplex room had an impeccable layout and outstanding contemporary finishings. We also had a cute terrace with breathtaking sea views and overlooking Manuel Island.
The boutique suites are to die for – they are absolutely gorgeous (as is the entire hotel), very clean, comfortable and aesthetically pleasing. As soon as you walk in you will be impressed by the careful attention to detail that has been dedicated to the decor and design of this luxury boutique hotel. Excellent value for money with a very high standard of service and quality.
Highly recommendable if you are looking for a nice romantic getaway and wish to be in the heart of Malta’s prestigious Capital City. There’s nothing like it.
We stayed for a night at Casa Ellul in which we were astonished by the elegance and serenity of the place. I have visited many other boutique hotels, but this has something special. The location is perfect, in the heart of the capital city. The staff are very professional and friendly. The suites were spacious, comfortable and clean. I strongly suggest to visit this place, perfect for a getaway weekend or even a relaxing holiday. We also visited the restaurant Risette, located in the hotel itself. Amazing food and unique fine dining experience. Strongly suggest a visit.
The location is smack bang in the middle of the capital city. Perfect as its street is quite yet close to all the advocates, shops, restaurants & bars. Most importantly it is away from the crazy sliema, st. Julian’s area. But yet a stone throw away should you wish to go 5 minutes by car.
Is this luxury? Yes the place offers all, what one would expect from a 5 star plus more. The staff will make you feel like royalty. No wonder royalty visited! Check out the photos and you will see what I mean :).
The only thing that you might miss is a pool, however you have two solutions to this. 1. Take a suit with a jacuzzi or walk 3 minutes down to the sea you are in Malta after all!
Restaurant of the hotel, super fine dinning incorporating ideas and flavors from all over the world all done by a top Chef!
Definitely recommend this place!
