Lesbiangaybisexual and transgender (LGBT) rights in the United States have evolved in recent decades. However, LGBT Americans may still face some legal and many social challenges not experienced by non-LGBT residents, particularly in states with large conservative populations, such as in the Deep South; in rural areas; and in some Native American tribal nations.

U.S. federal law does not explicitly include protections against discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity. In June 2020, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that sexual orientation and gender identity are included under “sex” as a prohibited ground of employment discrimination in the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

California is seen as one of the most liberal states in the U.S. in regard to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender (LGBT) rights, which have received nationwide recognition since the 1970s. Same-sex sexual activity has been legal in the state since 1976.
Guerneville has a long history of being a  gay friendly town and in downtown we can find a few gay friendly bars as well as Rainbow Cattle Company or The Main Bar at R3 Hotel are most famous gay bars in Guerneville, CA.
At its core, Guerneville is still known as a fabulous gay destination, but it also attracts a great amount of straight tourists, as is clear by signs like the one at Highlands Resort that calls the establishment “straight-friendly

Amenities include an outdoor pool and a sundeck, plus an outdoor fireplace. There’s also a workstation with Internet access.

The Woods Resort is the perfect answer for a relaxing, rejuvenating and (perhaps) slightly “spirited” escape to the Russian River. The Woods, centrally located in downtown Guerneville, is situated between the tall, swaying redwood trees and the hypnotic flow of the splendid Russian River for the ideal getaway.Within walking distance to shops, restaurants, dancing and live entertainment, The Woods Resort sits in a quiet corner bend of Fifes Creek.
The serenity of the grounds will enchant and lull you, with rooms and suites outfitted with the highest quality amenities. The Woods Resort offers cottages, free-standing guest cabins and multi-room suites with full kitchens, gas fireplaces, private balconies and stunning views of lush redwood forests. The resort has one of the largest swimming pools in the area, has full sun all day long. With an outdoor fireplace, stone fountains and romantically lighted landscaping, your stay at The Woods is guaranteed to make you forget the chaos of the real world.
Your hosts, Michael and Verna, are veterans of the local customer service industry with a familiarity of all the area has to offer in the way of recreation, adventure, wine tasting, dining, spa treatments and entertainment. They are happy to help you plan an exciting, memorable stay at the Russian River.
This is a great little place right in town. The mostly gay clientele is always friendly. They have a variety of room types from very basic to very nice with a price for every budget. The proprietors, Michael and Verna have had the place for a long time so it has an almost family feel. I never stay anywhere else.
The rooms all have a rustic (RE: crafted without being overly stylized) cabin feel to them. I usually get one of the basic rooms for myself. They’re small, but clean and comfortable. If you’re just looking for a weekend getaway, you can’t beat the price. (Obviously, if you want a nicer room, then check out the cabins instead.)
The pool is clean with a lot of comfortable chairs. It’s typically a chill experience with folks who just want to hang out without a lot of fuss. It’s about 3-4 blocks away from the shops, bars and restaurants on Main Street–easy to walk to. In the past, it catered to a mostly gay clientele, but this weekend I saw a lot of straight couples and families there, which was cool. It’s a very easy-going vibe.
Our room had a small but very adequate kitchen, and we cooked our dinners and lunches and one breakfast, which was not only cheaper, but a very nice way to make the time relaxing and intimate. (Even in our “deluxe cabin” the king sized bed took most of the floor space in the bed room, so the extra room in the kitchen was definitely worth the modest extra cost, even aside from being able to fix our meals.)
There is a big safeway in walking distance, so it’s easy to get stuff to cook. The cabin was on the second level, with a deck in front overlooking the pool — it was too cold to swim, tempting as it looked, but clearly in warm weather it would be neat to sit around the pool naked and soak up rays. Free wi-fi, flat screen TVs,decent selection of free DVDs to borrow, good “amenities” package (tailored to a gay clientele), ample parking.

Great location in the redwoods and a reasonable walk into town.

It seems like a bit of a “couples” destination, I think we only saw one kid. Nice mix of gay, lesbian and straight couples.

They also have a fabulous restaurant in town (Boon Eat + Drink) and let’s face it, anyone that loves her dog so much that she names the hotel and the restaurant after him is an A+ individual in our book. This is not your typical commercial hotel. It’s sweet, intimate, upscale and a total hate-free community. If you are afraid of gay people, stay elsewhere (far outside of the Russian River). If you want to feel special and taken care of during your stay here, we cannot recommend the Boon Hotel + Spa more highly.

I truly enjoyed this little boutique spa, by far the best in the area and I’ve stayed in four other places nearby. The crowd was a nice mix of gay and straight couples. The location is perfect, great breakfast with probably the best coffee in the area. The staff were always attentive and full of advice. The pool area is very relaxed.

Finally, something a little sophisticated at the River! Selfishly, I appreciate the pet-friendliness and the gay-friendliness, but if I were a pet-free straight man, I would still have loved this place. The people (owners as well as guests) are friendly and laid-back (yet just attentive enough), and the location is exceedingly convenient to the wineries, downtown party sites, and Anderson Redwoods.

Best of all, I can stay there knowing that i am having a minimal impact on the environment. I like that they have done the thinking and the work to keep my stay earth-friendly.

We offer our guests the chance to escape the ordinary and experience a unique hotel in a diverse and breathtaking destination. Whether it is canoeing on the river, biking the backroads, touring a world class winery, hiking the redwood forests or strolling along the beaches of Bodega Bay, you will return each evening to enjoy s’mores under a sky full of stars at Cottages on River Road.

We had a two-bedroom cottage and it was the perfect place for us to chill out. We love the evening campfire and smores and the continental breakfast — which will soon be expanded when the new kitchen is completed. There is a great pool area and the landscape is attractive.

The Cottages is a great location for the Russian River area – there is kayaking and swimming, wine tasting and vineyards — and downtown Guerneville — all nearby. We did a day trip up Route 1 to a couple of the parks, hiked along some bluffs, and explored tide pools. We look forward to returning to The Cottages on the Russian River and all the area has to offer.

I had the chance to stay at The Cottages in February and I was so impressed. Clean, beautiful rooms and extremely friendly staff. Excellent location- just up the road from downtown and across the street from a fun brewpub. The breakfast was delicious and the perfect way to start the day. After going on a hike at nearby Armstrong Redwoods Natural Reserve and enjoying a good meal in town, it was fun to head back to The Cottages and enjoy a fireside s’more in their charming courtyard with other guests.

I would say The Cottages makes the perfect basecamp for exploring Guerneville and the surrounding Russian River area. I hope to be back soon.

This is a wonderful place to stay if you’re exploring the Russian River area. It’s a little noisy being on the road but the rooms are well appointed and insulated so we had no issues sleeping. The grounds are lovely, pool was refreshing and the morning full breakfast was delicious. Our deluxe king room was spacious and had a kitchenette stocked with coffee, tea, wine glasses, mini fridge, microwave and bathroom had nice soaps. Bed was comfy and room nicely decorated. Enjoyed the evening s’mores around the fire and sitting on our porch having coffee overlooking the garden. Will be back.
