Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) rights in the United States have evolved in recent decades. However, LGBT Americans may still face some legal and many social challenges not experienced by non-LGBT residents, particularly in states with large conservative populations, such as in the Deep South; in rural areas; and in some Native American tribal nations.
U.S. federal law does not explicitly include protections against discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity. In June 2020, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that sexual orientation and gender identity are included under “sex” as a prohibited ground of employment discrimination in the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

Great location in the redwoods and a reasonable walk into town.
It seems like a bit of a “couples” destination, I think we only saw one kid. Nice mix of gay, lesbian and straight couples.
They also have a fabulous restaurant in town (Boon Eat + Drink) and let’s face it, anyone that loves her dog so much that she names the hotel and the restaurant after him is an A+ individual in our book. This is not your typical commercial hotel. It’s sweet, intimate, upscale and a total hate-free community. If you are afraid of gay people, stay elsewhere (far outside of the Russian River). If you want to feel special and taken care of during your stay here, we cannot recommend the Boon Hotel + Spa more highly.
I truly enjoyed this little boutique spa, by far the best in the area and I’ve stayed in four other places nearby. The crowd was a nice mix of gay and straight couples. The location is perfect, great breakfast with probably the best coffee in the area. The staff were always attentive and full of advice. The pool area is very relaxed.
Finally, something a little sophisticated at the River! Selfishly, I appreciate the pet-friendliness and the gay-friendliness, but if I were a pet-free straight man, I would still have loved this place. The people (owners as well as guests) are friendly and laid-back (yet just attentive enough), and the location is exceedingly convenient to the wineries, downtown party sites, and Anderson Redwoods.
Best of all, I can stay there knowing that i am having a minimal impact on the environment. I like that they have done the thinking and the work to keep my stay earth-friendly.

We had a two-bedroom cottage and it was the perfect place for us to chill out. We love the evening campfire and smores and the continental breakfast — which will soon be expanded when the new kitchen is completed. There is a great pool area and the landscape is attractive.
The Cottages is a great location for the Russian River area – there is kayaking and swimming, wine tasting and vineyards — and downtown Guerneville — all nearby. We did a day trip up Route 1 to a couple of the parks, hiked along some bluffs, and explored tide pools. We look forward to returning to The Cottages on the Russian River and all the area has to offer.
I had the chance to stay at The Cottages in February and I was so impressed. Clean, beautiful rooms and extremely friendly staff. Excellent location- just up the road from downtown and across the street from a fun brewpub. The breakfast was delicious and the perfect way to start the day. After going on a hike at nearby Armstrong Redwoods Natural Reserve and enjoying a good meal in town, it was fun to head back to The Cottages and enjoy a fireside s’more in their charming courtyard with other guests.
I would say The Cottages makes the perfect basecamp for exploring Guerneville and the surrounding Russian River area. I hope to be back soon.
This is a wonderful place to stay if you’re exploring the Russian River area. It’s a little noisy being on the road but the rooms are well appointed and insulated so we had no issues sleeping. The grounds are lovely, pool was refreshing and the morning full breakfast was delicious. Our deluxe king room was spacious and had a kitchenette stocked with coffee, tea, wine glasses, mini fridge, microwave and bathroom had nice soaps. Bed was comfy and room nicely decorated. Enjoyed the evening s’mores around the fire and sitting on our porch having coffee overlooking the garden. Will be back.
