Halal Hotels George Town

Malaysia is a country whose most professed religion is Islam. As of 2013, there were approximately 19.5 million Muslim adherents, or 61.3% of the population

By Crescent Rating, Malaysia is 1st rated among most Muslim-friendly countries.

How many mosques are there in Malaysia

The total number of mosques in Malaysia at present is around 6,077 which were based on the data obtained from Department of Islamic Development (JAKIM) website. On the average, about ninety two percent (92%) of mosques in each state of Malaysia falls under the category of qaryah mosques.

Like other tourists, Muslim travelers coming from Islamic countries have particular requirements when they choose the destination for their vacation. Among these requirements, Muslims are concerned about the availability of halal compliant foods (no pork or alcohol in food) and a clean place to pray.

Many international hotels in Malaysia do serve halal food that is slaughtered in accordance with the teachings of Islamic Sharia and is free of any substances forbidden by Islam such as pork and alcohol.

Other Islamic countries such as Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Morocco, Oman and Brunei continue to be popular with Muslim tourists. Among non-OIC countries, Singapore, Thailand, the UK, Japan and Taiwan remain the top five respectively, but show improved scores on the index.

The check in process was smooth and seamless. We were attended to  the moment we approached the reception counter. Special thanks to Sanjay, who was attentive, helpful, knowledgeable and courteous. Excellent customer service over the counter. Room was clean and tidy and ready to receive us the moment we entered. I like the flooring.

A change from the usual carpet. No need to worry about carpet’s foul smell and dust mites and the room is spacious for 3 pax. Toilet is clean with all basic toiletries inside. Housekeeping support was superb.

Jen Hotel is within UNESCO World Heritage site. I would recommend you to taste the hotel’s breakfast at least a day because the food Penang has to offer is all within close proximity of Jen Hotel. Strongly recommended is Nana Tomyam which offers Halal Thai cuisine. We had our dinner at this place. Its cheap and fulfilling . RM50 set A good enough for a family of 3 adults. Its located at Lebuh Dickens. Try it out!

For souvenirs to bring home go to Chowrasta market or Komtar. Price is reasonable.

Hotel Jen is well located and within walking distance of the highlights of downtown Georgetown in Penang.

The buffet breakfast was excellent, with local (Indian, Chinese, Malay) and western choices, which satisfied all members of our ethnically diverse group. Kudos to the restaurant manager and waiters/waitresses who were efficient and courteous.

We do have giblat directional sign in every guest room and it’s located in the wardrobe.

2. The Edison George Town 4* – Halal Hotels George Town Malaysia

The Edison George Town

The Edison George Town is set in a restored colonial mansion with contemporary decor. The stylish guest rooms are furnished with a sofa and guests enjoy complimentary turn down service. This boutique hotel boasts a chic common area, a bright courtyard and a swimming pool. Free WiFi and free parking are provided.

Decorated with modern furnishings, the air-conditioned rooms are appointed with a flat-screen TV and a sofa. All day snacks and non-alcoholic beverages are available in the room. The en suite bathroom includes premium bath amenities.

Daily continental breakfast is served at The Lounge, which offers complimentary all-day snacks and beverages. Alternatively, guests can have a meal at the nearby restaurants, located a 2-minute walk away.

Housed in a Colonial mansion dating from 1906, this elegant hotel opposite the Chocolate and Coffee Museum is 14 minutes on foot from Fort Cornwallis, and a kilometre from ferries at Swettenham Pier.

Refined rooms feature free Wi-Fi and flat-screen TVs. Upgraded rooms add minibars, and/or tea and coffeemaking facilities. Suites include 4-poster beds and sitting areas. Turndown service is offered. Kids age 10 and under stay at no charge when sharing with parents.

Breakfast, daytime refreshments, and pre-dinner wine tasting sessions are complimentary. There’s a relaxed lounge and dining room, plus a courtyard and an outdoor pool.

A beautifully restored Anglo-Colonial mansion, the interior design is a quirky take on Penang with whimsical touches of heritage within. The fresh concept combines timeless elegance, extending a blend of modern and traditional elements with quality and charm.

Offering 35 luxuriously appointed guestrooms and an unyielding commitment to comfort, exceptional guest service and gracious hospitality; one is bound to remember – The Edison Experience.

Its an old mansion that has since been refurbished. Rooms, decor, amenities and appliances are new and well maintained. The team behind The Edison are professional yet still warm and welcoming. Rooms are relatively small but very cosy and comfortable! Breakfast is simple yet sufficient.

Loved the warm shower, all day lounge, local old and school treats. Location wise, we walked almost everywhere, its so close by to Love Lane, which has tons of restaurants and coffee places.

The hotel is a modern up to date facility in an old mansion. Our room was well appointed, large, and with good lighting. The shower was excellent.

The breakfast was varied and plentiful. There were multiple types of juices, breads, cereals, and cheeses. They had scrambled eggs and were happy to cook other eggs to order. We were also able to get espressos and cappuccinos.

In the afternoon, the wine hour included very decent wines and cheeses.

For all that was included, we thought it was an excellent value. It’s convenient to many restaurants and attractions and worthy of its designation as a Small Luxury Hotel.

A lovely hotel in a good location, where you’re near many eateries, bars and popular attractions.

The staff are nice and helpful, and the hotel and room are clean and comfortable. Daily Happy Hour of wine and cheese, and a 24-h lounge of snacks and beverages that are included in room rate. Breakfast is a small selection of basic continental offerings and scrambled eggs, and a local favourite, nasi lemak. There are other types of eggs cooked to order but this isn’t widely informed until we asked if there was anything else for breakfast as we saw some other guests having it, and had also read about it in the reviews — perhaps there could be a menu displayed in the lounge for everyone’s ease.

Being a boutique hotel, The Edison might not offer guests who are used to the large-chain hotels the experience they’re used to, and can understand some of the comments on “how is it a small luxury hotel“. We felt The Edison was good and appreciate the personable staff (which you might not find in the large-chain hotels) but it could perhaps improve (on its room fit-out, and general hotel amenities) given the price that you’re paying.

Overall, it was a good stay except for the ‘live entertainment’ from across the road that goes on till slightly after midnight, which is no fault of the hotel.

Hard Rock Hotel Penang is within a 5-minute walk from the local night market. It is a 30-minute drive from the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Georgetown and a 45-minute drive from Penang International Airport.

This upscale, music-themed resort on Batu Ferringhi Beach along the Andaman Sea is 16 km from the island’s capital, George Town, and 33 km from the Penang International Airport.

Plush rooms with rock star-themed decor feature free Wi-Fi, flat-screen TVs and iPod docks, as well as minifridges, and tea and coffeemakers. Upgraded rooms offer sea views, terraces and/or swim-up pool access. Family rooms include PlayStations. Suites add living areas, some with sofabeds.

All rooms are fully equipped with DVD/CD players, 50-inch LCD TVs, BOSE Sound Systems, complimentary Wi-Fi and wired connectivity and an interactive IPTV system with free HD Blockbuster movies on demand.

At the Hard Rock Hotel Penang, we serve rockin’ food that is suitable for everyone; authentic American cuisine at the world famous Hard Rock Cafe, delicious Italian food at the Pizzeria and Asian and International cuisine at The Starz Diner.

Nice hotel, nice room, nice view & nice facilities. I’ll give 10/10 if the breakfast food is better. It’s kinda expensive for the variety provided with the price of RM56. I know this is Halal restaurant but at least you can provided beef version.

The remoteness is understandable, since it has beach access. But the rooms’ main lighting are fuschia strip lights which makes it seem like a nightclub, and in the bathroom you apparently have to choose between having a mirror or having walls (sliding mirror walls, please don’t make me explain). Fine with me, just know that if you try to take a picture it will turn out neon purple. Room has fridge, minibar and safe.

Toiletries included shampoo, conditioner, shower gel and body lotion (all 30ml). It also had a shower cap, Q-tips, cotton balls, sanitary bag, two toothbrushes with toothpaste and two bar soaps. The shower gel was fine, but the bar soaps left a waxy, greasy feel that you spend 10 minutes trying to wash off and then you’re left with that squeaky-clean feel. Conditioner didn’t really do anything. Generic scent, labeled ‘Sweetgrass’.

Our towels and free toiletries were replenished every day, even though a plaque said if we hung the towels up to dry they’d leave them. I didn’t mind.

The pool is pretty big and winding, with a normal tiled section and a sand-filled section. Temperature somewhere between cool and tepid. Has a basketball hoop. Pool operating hours are 7 am – 9 pm. You can rent single and double pool floats, for 12 RM and 20 RM a day respectively. There’s always some small leaves and stuff floating in the water due to the heavy foliage around the pool, but that’s what really makes the pool so beautiful. Again, makes for great photos.

The included breakfast buffet was halal, and had chefs that made you different styles of eggs to order. A weird array of dishes — coconut rice, plain chicken sausage, star fruit and danishes was basically the gist of it.

Opposite the hotel there’s halal food place (Warongs). Really tasty local food.

The stay here was incredibly comfortable and they really go out of the way to make it feel like home away from home. Upon checking in, you are served some delicious ice creams in a cup (with cute googley eyes to boot). I tried the yam flavour which I loved!

Buffet dinner was available at a discount for hotel guests, but go to the other G Hotel (just behind it) for better food choices. The breakfast spread was amazing with all sorts of delicacies including a roti canai station. If you’d like, you could also get breakfast served in bed by filling in a form and leaving it at your door handle (at additional charges).

Room itself was huge, bed was comfortable and I had a good night’s sleep. There was a desk for business travellers to get some work done, equipped with a lamp for extra lighting. And of course, a huge flat screen TV if you want to just kick back and relax.

The mini bar was equipped with some soft drinks, a kit kat and a small packet of M&Ms, and is completely free for guests! No more worries about late night rumbling tummies. There was a PILLOW MENU (no kidding!) where you could choose from contour pillows, latex pillows, etc.

Last but not least, location was also perfect. Right beside Gurney Plaza which is Penang’s best mall, and lots of access to food nearby.

Overlooking Batu Feringgi Beach, Shangri-La Rasa Sayang, Penang offers spacious rooms surrounded by 30 acres of tropical gardens. It features two outdoor swimming pools in the Garden Wing and one adult pool in the Rasa Wing. Free WiFi is available throughout the property. Hotel offers free shuttle services to the UNESCO heritage city of George Town. Rasa Sayang has a 9-hole golf course and an Eco Center. Guests can workout at the well-equipped gym or enjoy massages and treatments like aromatherapy at Chi, The Spa.

The swimming pools and yoga pavilion are other good relaxation options.

The Shangri-La whilst a fairly old resort was absolutely terrific. We opted for the Rasa Wing, which came with several benefits and apparently much nicer than the Garden wing. We ate at all of the restaurants, the Butter Chicken was so good I had no choice but to order it several times – miss it now!

Downsides, breakfast a bit bland and being a Muslim country no proper bacon or sausages. TV – very few channels.

The property itself lies at the start of the Batu Ferringhi night market. Out on the main road, you will find a mini commercial centre across the road which has a bank, 24-hour convenience shop and some local food shops. If you have a fast food fix, McDonalds and Subway can be found in the same vicinity. For my Muslim bretheren, a small mosque lies on the main road between the Shangri-La and Golden Sands Resort, about a 7-10 minute walk from the hotel. The night market runs everyday and you can find local products along side the cheap tourist crap. There are also food stalls, but be prepared to wait. We had to wait about 20-minutes for a small plate of char kway teow (local fried flat noodles). Definitely not for those who are really hungry.

The Shangri-La lies next to the Golden Sands Resort which is sister property. A beach path connects the two properties. If you want to avoid the pollution and crowds on the main road, use the beach path to cut through to the Golden Sands. The night market and everything I described previously lies literally across the road from the Golden Sands while the night market lies just at its doorstep.

The Shangri-La resort itself is nicely tucked away from the noise. The property is beautifully landscaped and guests can either lounge in the main pool or chill on one of the many lounge chairs in the garden.

Afternoon tea and evening cocktails were lovely. Breakfast was a good choice. It’s Halal so missed the bacon :).

The staff were universally smartly dressed, polite, helpful and friendly. The food at breakfast was extremely comprehensive (omelettes, curry, Japanese food, Malay dishes and the usual cold meats and pastries. Malaysia being a Moslem country there was no pork and all the food was Halal which suited the Moslem guests and was not a problem for us.
The menu at the poolside/beachside bar/cafe was good and with a good selection. We enjoyed the atmosphere there and ate there several times.

They had nice cocktails as well as the usual drinks, and there was a Happy Hour every day which we took advantage of. The hotel’s bars all serve alcoholic drinks as well as soft.
