The largest group of Muslims are the Sunnis, comprising around 80 per cent of the population. Sunnis are divided among various factions such as the Salafis, the Sufis, the Tawhid and the Tablighi jamaat.
By Crescent Rating, Mauritius is 73th rated among most Muslim-friendly countries.
How many mosques are there in Mauritius?
The first purpose-built mosque in Mauritius is the Camp des Lascars Mosque in around 1805. It is now officially known as the Al-Aqsa Mosque. The Jummah Mosque in Port Louis was built in the 1850s and is often described as one of the most beautiful religious building in Mauritius by the Ministry of Tourism’s guide. There are many smaller mosques in the towns and villages.
The highest concentration of Muslims is found in the capital Port Louis, predominantly in the Plaine Verte, Ward IV, Vallee Pitot and Camp Yoloff neighborhood.

The Muslim friendly hotel means a hotel that has Islamic characteristics that can provide basic facilities that are more friendly to Muslim customers such as a Qibla direction indicator, the availability of prayer tools, the presence of halal food / list of nearby restaurants that provide halal food.

Like other tourists, Muslim travelers coming from Islamic countries have particular requirements when they choose the destination for their vacation. Among these requirements, Muslims are concerned about the availability of halal compliant foods (no pork or alcohol in food) and a clean place to pray.

Many international hotels in Mauritius do serve halal food that is slaughtered in accordance with the teachings of Islamic Sharia and is free of any substances forbidden by Islam such as pork and alcohol.

Other Islamic countries such as Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Morocco, Oman and Brunei continue to be popular with Muslim tourists. Among non-OIC countries, Singapore, Thailand, the UK, Japan and Taiwan remain the top five respectively, but show improved scores on the index.

We were welcomed into the hotel with a short African dance and taken straight to our suite where welcome drinks, a bottle of fizz (non-alcoholic on our request) and fruits were waiting for us. We booked the fangapani suite – which is a great room, pictures just do not do it justice. We had a lovely balcony view of the ocean and white sand. The suite was modern with a complimentary mini bar and all the amenities you would expect. A nice shoe shining service as well. We have our one year old baby with us and there was a baby cot waiting for her that was of v good condition. She loved taking her baths in the big bathtub as well which made night time routines enjoyable!

Our butler Bhartee has been brilliant – she has taken extra attention to detail and made my birthday, my daughters and celebrating Eid during this trip fantastic. The room was decorated very nicely and was always a lovely surprise to come back to. Thank you so much!

The suite was always clean and all the housekeeping staff were very attentive of our needs and accommodating of our baby. The linen always smells fresh and the bed was very comfortable.

Food wise we are staying half board – so breakfast and dinner are included.

There is a buffet restaurant with different themed nights and then a la carte restaurants – Indian, Japanese, Mediterranean. We were very pleased to find halal food in all the restaurants. The dinner service was excellent in all the restaurants with staff waiting to help at all times as best they can.

They often made food for the baby on request. The tandoori salmon in the Indian restaurant is definitely something to try! Lunch in the Mediterranean restaurant on the beach is amazing with a great view of the beach, I’d recommend the fish dishes.

Floor manager Vikash and Chefs Raj (breakfast) and Kiran (dinner buffet) took amazing care of us during meals. making sure we know which meals are halaal and ensuring our every need is met. My husband caught a Dorado and Wahoo deep sea and chef Kiran made sure it was prepared to perfection. Trust me you will need more than a week to taste everything in the dessert room! And if there are desserts with alcohol, they can make certain ones without alcohol on request, like the souffles.

Chef Akash in the dessert room was an absolute pleasure to meet, he made every evening a joy and the desserts were out of this world!

The best hotel I’ve ever been in my life! Quality service, always putting the clients needs first and satisfying every whim of the client. Staff are so friendly and attentive and always have nice suggestions.

It’s great to have a hotel that caters for the Halal needs of the Muslim clientele by cooking dishes with alcohol and pork separately as well as having halal meat. The same goes for vegetarian meals.

Our special thanks to Diren for his service at the table everyday with special tea and Coconut water every day! special thanks to all the staff at buffet and chefs for guiding as towards the halal food!

The standard rooms are clean and a little dated but this is to change. They will be starting a revamp to make it even more stunning. We were UPGRADED to the junior suite on my sons birthday. This room is very spacious and beautiful (not dated !).

Food :- a variety of options to suit all and HALAL. Clearly labelled dishes for vegans , vegetarian and non alcoholic diets.
Every night was different and not disappointing.

I must make a special mention to Deepuck Gooljar. He is an Executive Sous Chef at the resort. My wife and I needed to eat Halal food and so enquired about the Halaal status of the food.

Deepak took it upon himself to go above and beyond to show us the certificates of the various suppliers that they get their meat from, and even offered to cook our food separately for us.

. The food at the hotel was by far the best hotel food we’ve ever had, there was so much variety and food was halal. Food containing pork was clearly labelled.

I would recommend going for all inclusive and that covers you for most things. Everything you need is at the resort so you hardly need to leave.

People are very friendly and make sure they do whatever it takes to make it that extra special. Bonus for us was that all food was Halal so we could eat pretty much anything. The that was pork was clearly indicated.
