Best Day Tours in Linz in Winter
Linz is a city in Upper Austria, straddling the Danube River midway between Salzburg and Vienna. Baroque buildings, including Old Town Hall (Altes Rathaus) and the old cathedral or Alter Dom, ring Hauptplatz, the old town’s main square. The riverside Lentos Kunstmuseum Linz has a major modern art collection. Across the river, the striking Ars Electronica Center focuses on society, technology and life in the future.

Right on the main square, the location is perfect. The Christmas markets are right there in front of you (if you come in December). The reception is up a flight of stairs (no lift – it is a historical building) and the reception staff are quite friendly. Our room was towards the back of the hotel – the window looks back onto the ancient outside corridor.
The walk along this corridor is full of interesting ‘bits’ and the stone is quite worn away … how much history! The rooms are light, beds comfortable and bathroom more than adequate.
The best part was the breakfast and the breakfast room.
The room looks out over the square and the breakfast has everything you could want including freshly squeezed orange juice, Christmas biscuits, Gugelhupf, numerous different breads and rolls, cheeses and cold cuts … very easy to eat too much.
Situated in the main square and at this time of year with the Christmas Market stalls in front, this is a very well run family hotel. Nice rooms, sturdy furniture, clean bathroom and an excellent breakfast in the splendidly old fashioned dining room. The wifi is very good quality too.
Only downside is you have to walk in off the street up to the first floor but from then on there is a lift. A room on the top floor overlooking the square gives a great view. The hotel is just five stops from the railway station on the very good tram service.
I have stayed in Linz several times but this was my first visit to this friendly hotel in the main square. It is easy to find, up a short staircase to the first floor reception and a very nice welcome. I asked for and got a single room overlooking the main square where the Christmas market was in full swing. Might be a bit noisy for some but the double glazed windows did the trick!
A very comfortable bed, a small but effective bathroom, no English TV programmes but that didn’t worry me. Splendid breakfasts in a lovely dining room overlooking the square. A very definite value hotel.
Its location right on the main square and just feet from the large Christmas market made it a no-brainer decision for us when booking.
The Wolfinger is a family-owned hotel and the staff could not have been friendlier. It’s quite old-fashioned in its decor and atmosphere and that gives it an enormous amount of charm.
The building is around 500 years old and even though it’s been modernised, you can still see the character and hints of the old structure. Our room was comfortable, clean and good-sized, but everything apart from the bed seemed to show its age and was a bit rough around the edges.
The shower cubicle was a bit small and the whole bathroom could have done with some updating, but to be honest, none of this bothered us as we were there for just one night. We considered most of it to be part of the hotel’s charm!
Breakfast was pretty good too. It’s served in a huge dining room overlooking the main square. It was a buffet of typical Austrian breakfast foods, like breads, cheeses and meats.

Great location to get around Linz – walking distance for all areas be it the Christmas Market or the Linz Tips Arena. From the hotel you are straight on to the main high street with high street shops or for the deli or even if you want a McDonalds. We ate at the italian restaurant adjacent to the hotel and it was excellent and reasonably price, the calzone pizza was fantastic!
The hotel is clean tidy and welcoming on arrival. I stayed 3 nights in the Executive double room.
Very clean, good temperature, bed very comfortable, robe and slipper and mini bar free for soft drinks.
The location is perfect on the main shopping street, 10 min to the main square. Absolutely clean, large room with all amenities in the bathroom – the cosmetic is ecological. The breakfast was very good. Own parking – 15 eur per night.
It is almost in the middle of the city centre with the main shopping street just beside the hotel. There’s tram services too in front of the hotel. Hotel is about 15 minutes walk or so from Linz HBF (about 1 km).
Plenty of shops, eateries surrounding the hotels, so overall, the location is excellent. The next day, as we have to take the Flixbus from Linz Industrialise, we just took a taxi from the hotel and it costs us 9 euro.
Room is small/compact with limited view of roof. Bed is compact (Queen size i think). Limited space to put large luggage.
Bathroom is compact but is ok (not very small). Shower is on top of bathtub and can be a bit slippery.
I think this was the highlight of the hotel. The buffet breakfast spread is good and felt very fresh too. I saw a lot of organics items being offered.
The breakfast area is cosy and comfortable. Service staffs were pleasant and very welcoming. I did enjoy the buffet breakfast a lot. Two thumbs up.
Overall, if you are looking for hotel with good location and good buffet breakfast, i would highly recommend this hotel. However, if you are looking for a spacious modern and trendy rooms, then please do not select this hotel.

he city center combines a vibrant mix of shops, culinary options, attractions and cultural institutions. Hospitality is lived here and the famous “Linzer Torte” is probably the most popular ambassador for the city.
The in September 2017 new opened Star Inn Hotel Linz Promenadengalerien, is located in the heart of Linz, only 200m from the “Mariendom”, the hotel is within easy reach from all directions. It is the perfect starting point for your day in Linz.
The Star Inn is bright and spacious from the word go. The reception area is neat and tidy, there is black leatherette seating against the walls opposite the front desk and these extend into a lounging area where guests can enjoy a glass of wine or a soft drink, there’s even a coffee machine.
Opposite this area are the elevators, which are activated by using one’s key card, something I wasn’t told.
The room was fairly pleasant. A perfectly respectable bathroom on the right and then the room opened out to accommodate a large double bed. There was an LG flatscreen television opposite the bed (no English channels) and a desk at the far end of the room beyond the bed and under the window.
A distinct wood theme prevailed: a wooden door, wooden wall panels and a large wooden headboard behind the bed.
Breakfast as we know is the great leveller and the Star Inn offering was perfect. Every morning I made my way down to the ground floor breakfast room where I chose muesli, a bowl of fresh fruit, a raspberry yoghurt, peppermint tea, two small croissants and a banana. Wonderful and fairly chilled.
There was no restaurant at the Star Inn so I had to eat out on both nights of my stay. The best place was Bigoli and you can find out why by clicking here.
The bathroom was fine, everything worked. Ultimately, the Star Inn was a pleasant place to stay, mainly because the guests were left alone to get on with whatever they were doing. The hotel staff were pleasant, always saying ‘good morning’ or ‘good afternoon’ if they passed by and, in terms of location, the hotel was bang in the centre of town.
Just up the road from Linz is the town of Leonding (a short tram journey) and it’s worth visiting a huge, new shopping mall that has opened there. It’s amazing in terms of its sheer scale and there’s also an IMAX cinema within the complex. In short, if you come to Linz as a shopper you’re in for a treat and you can amplify the experience by visiting the mall.
Linz was a lovely town – especially at this time of year – with streets illuminated after dark by exquisite shop window displays and Christmas lights.
