This hotel is part of Jing’An Kerry Centre commercial complex and is situated at the more expensive end of Nanjing street.

The glass and steel facade is quite impressive, though sterile. The check in was very efficient and in a couple of minutes we were whisked off to our room on the 45th floor.

The room was very spacious, bright and airy.

Our room had a sitting area that was separated from the sleeping area, by sliding doors, that were solid, though easily mobile. There was plenty of storage space, though, the transient guest would have very little use for them.

The presence of a Nespresso machine was a welcome sight.

However, with the increase in the number of portable devices, a few extra USB plugs would definitely help the itinerant traveller. Each of the areas had its own TV and there was in the writing desk, a hidden niche that permitted one to attach one’s laptop to the TV via USB or HDMI, (cords thoughtfully provided), though we never used them.

The curtains were completely automated and responsive. With a day and a night curtain provide, one could have adequate light during the day and cut out all ambient light at night.

Our room overlooked the areas around Nanjing Street with the Pudong area in the distance, and the views were quite arresting.

Breakfast for us was on the 55th floor and was a combination of a buffet and a-la-carte. While the pure vegetarian might find the spread a little repetitive, those who do not mind egg preparations would find enough to interest them.

Service on the Sunday that we were there though was a little erratic and we had to remind them about my order of pancakes. Our room also included an invitation to high tea and it was there that the pastry chef shone.

One of the biggest advantages of this hotel is its location. The hotel leads to a subterranean universe that is both a shopper and a gourmet’s delight. We found a nice little place that made for us a vegetable paella, that was delicious.

It is also close to the Jing-an temple – about a 5 to 7 minute walk. The shopping around has all the high end brands – sometimes multiple iterations of the same brand.

The staff is extremely courteous and the concierge was very helpful with his recommendations and in directing us to various places. All in all we had a lovely time in this hotel.

All provide minibars and Nespresso machines; some come with terraces. Posh suites add living rooms and/or fireplaces. Room service is available 24/7.

Amenities consist of 3 elegant restaurants (1 with a terrace and river views), 2 bars, and a spa with a gym and an indoor pool.

Located along the historic Bund with spectacular views of the Bund, Huangpu River, Pudong and former British Consulate gardens, The Peninsula Shanghai perfectly blends with the historic architecture of its landmark neighbours.

What a wonderful Christmas experience in Shanghai. From the checkin to the wonderful suite overlooking the Huangpu river. It was perfect. One would, of course expect this from the Peninsula but it was the staff that really helped make it memorable.

The room was simply special; amazing view, wonderful finishes, breakfast in the room allowed us to really enjoy everything about the suite.

Check-in was seamless, intimate and pleasant experience, as it should be.

A wonderful 2 hours in the spa really sealed the occasion.

The Peninsula Shanghai is definitely a luxury experience the minute you enter. The lobby is beautifully decorated this time of the year with Christmas ornaments and grand floral pieces. Service was standard but good; not over the top amazing but great compared to other places in China. Service staff spoke reasonably good English for those who aren’t mandarin speaking.

We got a Deluxe Garden room overlooking the peaceful greener. The rooms were spacious and the bed was really large and comfortable. What I really liked was they had 2 separate sinks in the bathroom, a huge convenience you would appreciate! The bath is also really large and very nice for a soak at the end of a long day.

Apart from the room, the hotel pool was nothing short of amazing. It was lightly heated which made it a joy to swim in and there’s also a hot jacuzzi for you to enjoy soaking in.

We only had the hotel breakfast for a morning and it was great. Unlike a typical hotel breakfast buffet, the Peninsula offers an array of breakfast dishes from the traditional western to Japanese/Asian dishes. There’s a small buffet of cold cuts, cheeses and breads/pastries to accompany the main courses as well. You can also order more than one main course if it does not fill you up!

My only gripe was that the water pressure for the rain-shower could be stronger, and that it would be good if we could control the AC in the room. There was only an option to adjust the humidity for the room and it did get a tad stuffy in the night.

3. Radisson Collection Hyland Shanghai 4* – Hotels Near Shanghai Christmas Markets

Radisson Collection Hyland Shanghai

Presenting a spa and fitness centre, Shanghai Hyland offers accommodation centrally located in Shanghai’s commercial district. It features a business centre, 4 dining options and free private parking.

Situated along popular Nanjing Road, Sofitel Hyland is less than 1 km from the historic Bund and Shanghai Museum. It is 20 km from Hongqiao International Airport.

Elegantly decorated with wooden furnishings, the air-conditioned rooms enjoy beautiful views of Shanghai’s cityscape. Aside from a pillow menu, each room also has a cable TV and electronic safe. Private bathrooms have toiletries and a hairdryer.

The best thing about this hotel is its location. It is only a short walk to the subway station, which is connected to lines 2 and 10, which will take you to the airport or train station when you leave. It’s also nice not to have to transfer lines when arriving. It’s also only a short walk to the Bund and only one stop over to the People’s Park and only a few stops from the French Concession and Oldtown.

The hotel itself is just a standard nice hotel. However, beware of people trying to solicit you as you exit and enter the hotel at night because the hotel is on a pedestrian street.

ery good location right smack on the Nanjing Pedestrian street. Lots of good food in the area and fast food (for late night snacking). Diverse shopping options and lots of international brands such as Adidas, Nike, Lego (with exclusive China collections/unique displays).

Full service hotel and front desk staff are fully bilingual. Room comes with a pillow menu and toilet is well spaced and includes bath tub. Bright bathroom lighting optimal for applying make-up.

Generally, hotel is quite old (rooms and design-wise) but the location, good service and functional layout and size makes up for the old feel.

Short 5-10min walk to the nearest subway station Nanjing East station, and walkable distance (10-20 mins) to the Bund.

Staff are situated at lift lobbies and reception areas to ensure that you can get assistance easily. Hotel feels secure and even level 1 lobby toilets require a key card from the nearby reception desk (to deter all the random passersby from coming in to just use the restrooms).
