Find the best and authentic accommodation in Maramures is becoming harder and harder. There are a lot of accomodation options in Maramures but many lack authenticity and the local charm as it used to be: small accomodation with 2 – 3 rooms only. I remember first time I visited Maramures with my parents many years ago in would in such a place; unique and magic. Unfortunately I don’t remember the name or the location of that place. This time we decided to book Pensiunea Marioara in Breb.

It was not an easy research since we had little time to do it; we left straight after our wedding in Romania and first stop was Sighisoara and them Maramures and the rooms where book only few days in advance. We had to find a place which was in the same time as wished (small, rural and authentic) and not to close to Sighisoara and not too far to our next destination – Bucovina in order not to arrive late in our locations. Pensions in Barsana or Ocna Sugatag where not what I was looking for. Never been before to Breb and did not know the exact location and then our desired guesthouse appeared to be free. We book the last 2 rooms on Booking.com since it was already close to peak season in Romanian and when local people start their holidays.

Location @ Pensiunea Marioara Breb
The location is also superb, because the village of Breb is off of the main road, meaning there is no traffic. Instead, we can go for lovely walks around the area and get a sense of the real Maramures.
The village of Breb is small and fairly isolated and the only option to have lunch or dinner is at the Marioara house since there are other restaurants. So we had the half board option (breakfast & dinner)
We spent two nights at this romantic inn in this very charming village of Breb, Romania. We were the only romanians at the moment of our arrival – all the other guests where foreigners which means the pension catters more for foreigners.

Rooms @ Pensiunea Marioara

We stayed in a double room facing the main parking lot & village and it had a shared balcony as well with another room.
The charming rooms displayed Romanian handmade textiles while teaching us some area culture. Rooms and beds were very comfortable as well as easy location to explore the village.
Rooms were very well maintained and clean with a lot of natural light in the room. We slept very well in the confortable bed and no noise was coming at all from outside even if our room was facing the main entrance.

There are two ‘houses’: the ‘old house’, which is a sort of wooden structure in a grassy patch, stocked with beds, etc, and brought up to modern norms safety-wise, etc, and the ‘new house’ round the corner, which is more just a normal house. We stayed in the normal, new house. In the old house only 1 room is available and it was occupied by another romanian couple from Cluj – a bit weird couple since they did not drink at all at the meals we had tougher!

Place is ideally for families with kids as it has a big courtyard where can play without being bother from noise and it’s safe being in a remote place not to close to the road.

Bathroom @ Pensiunea Marioara

Bathroom was well maintained, recently renovated and all the necessary amenities. Shower room was separated from the toilet area and water pressure was very good and very hot water.
During our stay the internet worked very well in our room with any flaus.
Meals @ Pensiunea Marioara
Lucky we spend our holiday in Maramures and at Pensiunea Marioara after our wedding because in our 3 days stay I think I added an extra 3kg!
On arrival, even it was late we had dinner. We had to order it in advance since all the meals are cooked on the sam day for the exact number of person and no food to be wasted. Dinner is served from 7 to 9pm but we can stay after 9pm on the porch to enjoy the real rural life; even if in the evening it’s getting colder. A mix vegetable soup or ciorba as it’s called in romanian was served and it was very good; we can fill in your plate as many times as you would like.

In the same time, medicament, as Mrs Marioara called the romanian alcohol provided for free (tuica or visina/afinata) was free of charge. In the first evening we had only one small bottle of cherry brandy a romanian delicacy in terms of drinking! In the second evening we had 2 small bottle since the other tourists were not used to drink that much at the table; me, my myanmar wife and the australian friend managed to finish 2 bottles and not getting drunk – mainly because of the fat food which is served at the dinner. Super home cooking, not to mention the alcoholic beverages were the highlight of our stay.

Breakfast was a different story; it was different every day. One day we had a very good omelet and the second day we had pancakes which went very well with the homemade jam!
My friends were not very impressed by the breakfast because it was too heavy – to romanian and too from Maramures area – it was the breakfast locals eats before going to the field work.

Everyday we had cheese (very good) pork fat (not too many foreigners eat it in the morning) and some other meat products, butter and a very homemade bread. Coffee with local milk as provided as well and it was excellent. All the products are natural; you can say organic and fresh as well and this is one of the reason why the food was so great!
Prices & Booking @ Pensiunea Marioara Breb Maramures
The price for one double room starts from 25 Euro per night. Breakfast is not included in the price at cost an additional 5 Euro per person. Dinner has the same price as breakfast and it has to be ordered one day in advance.
I will definitely stay again at Pensiunea Marioara in Breb for our next holiday in Maramures. The location is amazing, cool and the hosts are very friendly and welcoming.
