We had a great stay at the hotel. A cool, warm vibe with great, friendly service which is unusual for Japan. We particularly loved that we were able to bring our dog and that the staff treated us and the puppy so kindly! We will be back for sure.
We brought our dog and everything was all ready in the room – a crate, bed, pee pads, and bowl!
The staff was also very helpful and kind! We recommend it for anyone who is interested in bringing their dog.
I also loved the Mexican restaurant interior with it’s high ceilings and chill out area downstairs. The food was delicious too, especially the sweet potato tacos.
We stayed in one of the dog friendly rooms equipped with a spacious dog cage and bed. The room was cosy with a cute mid century feel.

2. Daiya Ryokan 2* – Pet Friendly Ryokan Kyoto
Daiya Ryokan is a 5-minute walk from Kyoto Station and the Higashi Hongan-ji Temple. It offers traditional Japanese-style accommodation with a public bath and a laundrette.
Guestrooms feature tatami-mat flooring with traditional futon bedding. Each room is equipped with a TV and tea making facilities. Communal bath facilities are available.
This ryokan has public baths which can be reserved for private use. Bicycle rental is available for guests who wish to explore the beautiful surroundings.
Ryokan Daiya is within a 10-minute walk from Shosei-en Garden and Kyoto Tower.
The owner of this property keeps several dogs as pets.
It’s located very close to the main train station – arriving in Kyoto and transferring to the hotel takes less than 10 minutes on foot. There is a hot tub on the ground floor, which can be used anytime, and which is actually quite relaxing. A combini is right across the street, the front door is open 24 hours a day, so once you’re checked in you’re free to come and go as you please. The host is flexible and pet friendly.
And to be honest I was underwhelmed at first. But the place has grown on me. It is very conveniently positioned being a couple of blocks north of the main railway station in Kyoto and walking distance to downtown with the Nishiki Market.
The facilities are basic but very functional and clean. It is proper ryokan with yukata provided, tatami rush mat flooring and futon mattress in the room.
Location: ~7 min walk from Kyoto station in a quiet neighbourhood. Very central location where you can get the metro/trains within and outside of Kyoto.
There are several malls, convenience stores and restaurants along the way.
Amenities: Daily towels/ toothbrush provided. There was only one western style shower but not a problem as it was vacant most of the time.
Communal showers / sinks / toilets are basic but clean. Toiletries and wifi provided. Friendly staffs who would dish out useful travel advice and engage in some banter. They even provided us with goodie bags as it was Christmas time.
Room: I got a room for 2 in the main building. Based on other reviews, it seems the rooms on the new building opposite are better. A different experience for me as all the rooms were tatami style.
Mattresses and duvets were sufficient and comfortable. Good heating in the room. The room is very basic, pretty old with peeling walls, faded paint and very thin walls.
Overall: The rooms are old but it was not a major concern – the price point and location mattered more to me. I had a good experience at the Ryokan. If you are looking for a lush experience and have money to spend, you are better off elsewhere.

station.

After traveling all over Japan and staying in tiny hotel rooms this was a breath of fresh air.
The room was huge with separate kitchen with stove fridge and all necessary appliances. Dining space and bedroom were large spaces.
The hotel is located a short walk over the bridge to the main town and the bamboo forest.
There is a convenience store and a few restaurants nearby if you don’t want to walk to the main town.
I loved this hotel. The staff were great and the whole place was very clean. I would definitely recommend.
However, when you walk to your room the fronts of the rooms look very grey and boring, like a prison. Don’t worry though because when you open the door you will be pleasantly surprised how bit and nice the rooms are.
*The location is great, BUT it’s important to know about the secret path alongside the hotel and canal. If you don’t know about that, you will feel it’s a long way to the big bridge, but when you know about it, it’s great.
From the Saga Arashiyama JR station it’s a 20 minute walk, but from Hankyu Arashiyama station it’s a 1 minute walk.
