We booked an economy room but were not aware that they were doing renovations on those rooms.
I was a bit nervous that there would be a lot of noise because of that and because we were on the second floor right next to the street. Surprisingly, we slept great.
They have two sets of windows to block noise and it worked really well. I didn’t really even need earplugs.
The room was large with nice furnishings but it did need some updating.
The breakfast each morning was wonderful and spoiled us for the rest of the trip.
The staff during breakfast was efficient and very pleasant but didn’t speak much. The front desk staff was very nice and helpful when we needed them.
Close to Rock Church, shopping mall, supermarket, walkable distance to Senate Square.
I walked to ferry terminal (to Tallinn), easy way but took 30 min.
The hotel is about 4-05 blocks form the main rr terminal and 2-3 blocks from the Parliament in a quier clean safe area, It was redecorated in 2005-rooms are fairly spacious, particularly those on higher floors at the end of a corridor and/or corner rooms.
Room are decorated in cool environmental ceiling patterns, modern decor and good-sized bathroom.
Nice comprehensive buffet breakfast included in our 85E rate. Bar on first floor for snacks and lite fare.
Walk down Luotsikatu and Kauppiaankatu, a short distance east of the cathedral, where there are numerous examples of Jugend to compare with Senate Square’s classicism and with the city’s more modern buildings.
Also interesting is the open air museum Seurasaaren Ulkomuseo (Seurasaari Open-Air Museum)–a collection of Finnish regional buildings dating from the 17th century. Located on Seurasaari Island, it is easily reached from central Helsinki
Try the various food booths at market square by the waterfront for a lunch with locals and tourists and the buffet in art nouveau ish Cafe Kappelli at the nearby Esplanade.
And nearby are the boutiques such as Marimekko, worth a visit and possible a purchase on one of their summer 50% off sales. The park in/near Eira may have free early evening rock or jazz concert. If you want some other suggestions email me.
Helsinki is a delight to visit-worth 3-4 days easily after a visit to somewhat depressing and less atmospheric moscow and St Petersburg.

The rooms are incredibly comfortable and well set up. The room was warm even on -2 degree days. The bar area is a perfect place for a drink with lovely bar food (try the Scandi sampler plate). I also recommend the Coffee Old Fashioned – very nice indeed.
The restaurant is delightful and provides a really charming environment for dinner and breakfast. I enjoyed the breakfasts very much. Plenty of choice and some really interesting Finnish touches.
The staff couldn’t have been more helpful and friendly. I had a small problem which the staff (including the senior manager) could not have been more helpful with.
There are plenty of restaurants and interesting shops nearby. The train station is a 900 metre walk away but the trams are only a 3-4 minute walk away. Get the Helsinki public transport app – it is so easy to buy a ticket and plan a journey (in English) and makes using any form of transport in and around Helsinki really easy.
I stumbled on the major Christmas market in Senate Square – oh it was fabulous. There was even a sauna there and a sauna bar. I didn’t try it out but I loved the idea.
