Lesbiangaybisexual and transgender (LGBT) rights in the United States have evolved in recent decades. However, LGBT Americans may still face some legal and many social challenges not experienced by non-LGBT residents, particularly in states with large conservative populations, such as in the Deep South; in rural areas; and in some Native American tribal nations.

U.S. federal law does not explicitly include protections against discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity. In June 2020, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that sexual orientation and gender identity are included under “sex” as a prohibited ground of employment discrimination in the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

Connecticut is regarded as one of the most LGBTfriendly U.S. states, on account of its early adoption of LGBT rights legislation. A 2017 survey by the Public Religion Research Institute showed that 73% of Connecticut residents supported same-sex marriage.
Hartford is the capital of Connecticut. It’s home to the Mark Twain House & Museum. The 1874 mansion contains thousands of artifacts, including the desk at which Twain wrote his best-known works. The Harriet Beecher Stowe Center includes the author’s Victorian house and many period furnishings, plus a garden. The broad collection of the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art includes Renaissance and impressionist works.

The Goodwin story began in 1881, when two brothers, James J. Goodwin and Rev. Francis Goodwin, developed this classic structure as a landmark apartment building. Originally developed as an upscale apartment building and later converted to a hotel, The Goodwin was a classic and prestigious address from the start.
With a star-studded history, characters like J.P. Morgan resided there during visits to his hometown, and it has retained its sophistication and appeal ever since. The hotel was converted in the late 1980s in conjunction with the Goodwin Square project, its façade was preserved from the apartment building, and has become an iconic Hartford landmark. For its 2017 rebirth, The Goodwin will exude a vibrant City style, while retaining elements of its history, heritage and tradition to demonstrate the authentic character that makes it so special.
Guest rooms have been re-imagined. Interior spaces have been thoughtfully designed as welcoming gathering areas. Original fireplaces remain, built-in wood closets restored. The entire staff has been classically trained in the lost art of service and hospitality. And a world-class brasserie adds to the unmistakable Goodwin experience. Cosmopolitan and urban-chic…yet grounded in a timeless and rich history. Welcome to the only boutique hotel in Hartford.
This hotel in Downtown Hartford is very nice, from the convenient location to all the eatery’s and the economical price. It has a nice decor in the room and some rooms have fireplaces as well. I would recommend this hotel to anyone looking for a nice place without having to travel really far.
The standard room was large, modern, and had beautiful details. The bed was large and comfortably firm. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The free shuttle was handy to use in going to and from the train station. The art deco lobby was beautiful. The breakfast was excellent. The refrigerator in the room was handy. And we were able to walk to and from our concert at the Bushnell. Dinner at Salute (Italian) was great! We would highly recommend and would stay here again.
This is a very nice property. Perfect location in downtown Hartford. The staff at the front desk was very nice and helpful and the rooms are well appointed. Hotel has a nice feel to it. Rooms are a tad small but nice.
Overall, great hotel in a nice location, just a block or so from a beautiful park (complete with beer garden!) for running or walking, and lots of restaurants as well, including an awesome one on site. There is a convenience store just two doors down for amenities. Our room and bath were quite large, beds very comfortable, and service at the valet, in the restaurant and bar were perfect. The room was a little noisy though – we were right above the valet station and the “beeps” from people locking their cars got annoying.
Thankfully it was a weekend night in downtown Hartford, so it didn’t go too late. Check in was more efficient than friendly, but everyone else seemed to go out of their way to be nice. Breakfast area was fun, and the donuts were delicious. Would definitely return, but maybe ask for a room at the back, away from the hotel entrance.

Clearly the best appointed accommodation in the area. Staff was friendly. Special requests were honored without question in a timely manner. Did not love breakfast but we might be picky. Restaurant staff was charming.

Overall very clean, pretty hotel. Very convenient to Wesleyan University. We would certainly stay again.

Older hotel with nice upgraded rooms. The room was spacious, but bathroom was a bit small – it’s an older hotel. Very friendly service and helpful staff! Great valet parking available. Downstairs breakfast – excellent breakfast included with our stay. There is a pub also onsite. Room was very clean, comfortable, and quiet. Housekeeping was very responsive when needed. We would stay here again – plus it’s right in the middle of the town and a manageable walk up the hill to campus, or a 5-minute drive to the athletic center.

The staff is Friendly! The rooms are newly decorated and pretty. The Tavern has a lovely menu. Breakfast is delicious! The hotel is convenient to restaurants and Wesleyan University! There is a drug store almost next door. Valet parking is helpful! Overall a wonderful experience.

What a wonderful place to stay. I recommend it highly. Comfortable, affordable and elegant. We were there for a wedding and it was absolutely beautiful. Food in the Tavern was great and so was the service.

t was nice to find a hotel in a great location right on main street. The large newly renovated rooms were on the larger side for a hotel room. The staff was quite pleasant and helpful. I did not eat in the restaurant but it was packed when I went to check out. They have a pool and nice gym which I was happy to use. Lots of events happening the night before but the hotel was nice and quiet. I liked being able to walk the entire main street and not have to drive to dinner. Will definitely be back.

The housekeeping did amazing jobs. Very clean roomsclean bathrooms and smells fresh. This place is classy, elegant and cozy all wrapped up. Our two queen beds were like sleeping on a cloud in heaven. The shower was amazing, if I wasn’t so conscious about saving water I would have stayed in there half the day. The indoor pool was great way to get some exercise. The indoor hot tub was just what we needed after a long stressful day.

We loved sitting outside on in their courtyard, just wished the music was on both days we were there. I can’t tell you how much I enjoyed my stay! I just wish it was longer. This outstanding and beautiful Inn is located not far from many local shops and restaurants. They also have some amazing food on site at The Tavern at the Armory.

We stayed here recently while visiting the Hartford area and was pleasantly surprised by this hotel.

It’s inevitable that some folks will have a negative experience of some type at one point or another. But our stay was more than we expected.

Sure, the hotel is in a industrial-type area across the street from a small airport. But we had no issues whatsoever. The room was clean and the staff was friendly. Also, the overall appearance of the hotel was clean with no issues.

The staff were fantastic — friendly, with big welcoming smiles. I felt genuinely cared for as a guest both upon check-in and again at check-out (in my experience this certainly doesn’t happen at all chain hotels). I also received a free upgrade (to an Executive suite — which was almost bigger than my apartment!) upon arrival — completely unexpected and totally made my stay.

On top of that, the fitness center is AMAZING (new equipment, big and airy) and the breakfast without question was the best I have ever had at a BW or similar chain hotel. Seriously mind-blowing the huge array on offer!

I also slept incredibly well — the quiet is very quiet.

Oh, and the shower? The best I have perhaps ever had in my ENTIRE life. Wow. I could have stayed in there for hours! The only issue I had with my entire stay was that the cold tap in my bathroom sink would not turn off properly, and it kept flooding the bench area.

Everything else was fantastic. I was in the area for a meeting at a local school, and I actually live in CT, so I don’t know if I’ll be staying in the area again, but if I do … I will 100% stay here.
