Muslims are a minority group in China, representing between 0.45% to 2.85% (6 million to 39 million) of the total population according to the local government. Other independent sources claim between 60-80 million Muslims in China
By Crescent Rating, China is 50th rated among most Muslim-friendly countries.
How many mosques are there in China?
In of 2014 there were 39,135 mosques in China, 25,000 of these are in Xinjiang, a north-west autonomous region, having a high density of one mosque per 500 muslims. In China, mosques are called Qīng Zhēn Sì (清真寺, “Pure truth temple”), a name which was also used by Chinese Jews for synagogues.
Like other tourists, Muslim travelers coming from Islamic countries have particular requirements when they choose the destination for their vacation. Among these requirements, Muslims are concerned about the availability of halal compliant foods (no pork or alcohol in food) and a clean place to pray.
Many international hotels in Shanghai do serve halal food that is slaughtered in accordance with the teachings of Islamic Sharia and is free of any substances forbidden by Islam such as pork and alcohol.
Other Islamic countries such as Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Morocco, Oman and Brunei continue to be popular with Muslim tourists. Among non-OIC countries, Singapore, Thailand, the UK, Japan and Taiwan remain the top five respectively, but show improved scores on the index.

First time in Shanghai. Splurged and booked a room with view of Pudong, Huangpu River and The Bund. Amazing room and views. Staff is super professional and helpful. Breakfast spread is unrivaled! Location is excellent – get your day going or evening winding down with a walk on The Bund. About 10 minute walk to Yu Yuan Gardens.
About 10 minute walk to Nanjing Road. Both of those places are great to visit, but you can also catch the metro there. We spent many minutes gazing at sites – you see the entire colonial Bund in one eye and the modern Pudong in the other.
Our room was very comfortable, great bed. The wifi signal was strong and speedy, the breakfast was excellent. The location couldn’t be better, right on the river overlooking the Bund. The service was gracious and unfailingly polite.
Not many of the employees speak English well–or at all–but Google Translator helped in those cases. We had a wonderful time in Shanghai and having a great hotel helped.
Very comfortable hotel with helpful staff.
We booked a Bund Deluxe room which had a great view of the Bund – we were there over the National Day and enjoyed watching the crowds on the Bund and the preparations and fabulous light show on buildings in the lead up to the National Day. The breakfast was varied and catered for most tastes and the complimentary cocktail each afternoon was welcome.
The staff were very helpful: storing our luggage for 3 days as we left Shanghai and returned; and concierges were happy to order DiDis (uber). The great location meant we could walk to many of the sites and restaurants.
And when the weather turned nasty on the National Day there was a fabulous restaurant, Da Ivo, with a great view on the top floor of the hotel building so we didn’t have to venture out.
